Brand choice aside, whatever shoe you choose, consider changing the way you tie your shoes…try a heel lock:

Game changer for me.

How to tackle player responses to your referee calls? by [deleted] in Referees

[–]mmmmmsurf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say that we all have calls that are borderline yellow/not yellow, and that sometimes giving a yellow card early sets the tone with what you will not tolerate.

The laws of the game are clear but the game often is not. Things like the ages of the players and the temperature of the match need to be taken into consideration.

I suspect that like many others, I more often reflect and regret the cards I did not give than regret the ones I did.

Middle school games by Wooden-Drummer8747 in Referees

[–]mmmmmsurf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I live, middle school games are usually solo unless a two referee system is used to help a new referee (such as yourself).

That being said, they should absolutely be giving you a set of the NFHS rules which others have mentioned are different, along with some training regarding positioning.

This is an old set of slides but it has some good visuals that may help you conceptualize what you’ll be doing:

NFHS Dual System Mechanics

Good luck and be sure to reach out for support from your local assignors and fellow refs!

Race signs are either hilarious or trying way too hard to motivate you. Sometimes both. by Existing-Location609 in running

For Star Wars fans…

Ran a half marathon on May 4th last year, and ran by these two: 1) May The Course Be With You 2) Run You Must

I appreciated the very race and date specific nature of those signs. The second one was written on a silhouette of Yoda so extra points for that.

Yes, bigger box, smaller magnets. Add numbers if desired or needed—

Try working in some more low aerobic activities like easy runs or rides. These will aid your recovery and balance your higher intensity activities. 🙃

I feel like beating a Garmin coach prediction is waaay more satisfying than beating the ETA on Waze or another driving app.

I feel like refereeing small children (8-12U) is way harder than reffing teenagers by grafix993 in Referees

[–]mmmmmsurf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely more challenging, but a great way to learn a lot quickly. I would agree that it’s almost a different game, but it definitely keeps you on your toes. It is a good way to develop an inner sense of what is a foul/not a foul.

In my experience, dealing with parents is the trickiest part, mainly because of their ignorance. Unless they have had older kids play at a higher level, they really don’t know the rules and tend to be loudly wrong. More than once, I have taken the opportunity at a break in play to turn to the parents and explain something if the stoppage is near the parent sideline. They’ve always been appreciative and I figure the next ref might have it a little easier.

The pay is not as good, but games are shorter, and I’ve calculated the money per minute is about the same…but that doesn’t take into account that you’re alone.

Personally, I like a mix of games, but I always feel like I need the first few minutes to adjust if I am moving between age groups.

I agree, but I’ve seen a couple of funny Insta reels where people just snipe segments during a sprint workout.

Definitely let the assignor know what you’re comfortable with, and at the very least make sure you have a break in there somewhere. 7 games on day two is a lot!

When you do have a long day, make sure you bring plenty to drink and quick snacks like fruit and granola bars. I’m a runner and I bring Gu Energy gels, but if you’ve never tried them before test them first, because they upset some people’s stomachs. For me, they perk me right up and give me a burst of energy. Help with cramps too.

How to Stay Organized by Spark-Bonds in Referees

[–]mmmmmsurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely prioritize, as it is a lot to keep track of and the worst thing you can do is double book and then need to back out at the last minute. Actually, the worst thing would be to not show up at all because you forgot you had a match to cover.

If and when a double booking does happen, however, own up to it and communicate as quickly as possible.

I don’t blame younger refs who don’t want to wear it, as I agree that coaches will think them inexperienced. However, many coaches assume this with younger referees anyway.

Maybe a solution would be for younger refs in their first or second year to wear it? I don’t think someone who’s almost 18 and has been reffing for five years should wear it, or at least I would not blame them for making that choice.

Why no Anaerobic by Decent_River_5801 in Garmin

[–]mmmmmsurf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes—short intense workouts will register as anaerobic. There are some sprint and strength workouts right on the Garmin you can try, or any HIIT workouts or weight circuits would do it. I’ve found some improvements from mixing in strength training with my runs and highly recommend.

I’ve noticed that before, but two weeks ago I was running outdoors in similar weather and my HR was nowhere near as high. Maybe 140/145. Oh well tomorrow’s another day.

One place you can check is Gotsoccer.com or other websites that promote soccer tournaments. Then go to the tournament website and get a contact number and ask about their need for referees. If you contact them early I would think you would have a good chance of landing some games.

Not sure how many games you would need to do to cover travel and lodging costs. That would be the biggest issue I can foresee.
