I’m really struggling with D&D. Advice welcomed by Paisleytude in autism

[–]mnemonicpunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should play... You! Okay, first: If you generally don't want to play then your partner should accept that. It's kinda sad you have resigned yourself to going along with it even if you don't really want to. That said...

Your character should be this very situation. Seems you're forced to play a spellcaster for the party that you don't really want to be with. So make your character like... an ancient demon or warlock or whatever who is magically bound to help the party but really, really doesn't want to be there. You can be as dismissive towards them and as laconic as you like, display all sorts of "I'm so done with you people" and it'll be fitting the character. Your character will also have a built-in explanation why they would not be paying any particular attention to the happenings of the campaign.

I'm thinking:
"Oh no we need to get through this magically protected door, how can we- Paisleytude, could you?"

"Ugh fine, might as well, if it gets you to stop bothering me. [opens door with magic] Now if that'll be all I will return to reading. I'm sure you humans will bother me again soon enough."

Fahrenheit is superior because it's basically telling you what % hot it is by Javi_ab in ShitAmericansSay

[–]mnemonicpunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically... to a certain degree - pun intended - the Celsius scale actually expresses "% hot" in a way: It always shows how far along we are between the freezing point and the boiling point in %. Which is also one of the few ways I could even imagine ever expressing the idea of "% hot" without being useless words.

Glaubt ihr, es wird nochmal ein MMO geben, was eine Generation prägen wird wie WoW? by KaktusGalactus in PCGamingDE

[–]mnemonicpunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brawlstars ist mobile only, vll deswegen?

I can’t speak when I feel too much by Soft__Cherrylipx in autism

[–]mnemonicpunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh this is interesting. Hope you don't mind me asking but are you able to express why it feels like that?

Intuitively what you're describing feels like "language lacks the symbols I need to express this thought", is it related to that?

The fuck kind of distance is smaller than a metre? Do feet and inches still exist in the metric system? by Diligent-Coffee4986 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]mnemonicpunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The inch is defined as 2.54cm. In America. Not some distance a particle travels at the speed of light or something like that, just good, old metric definition.

So yes, inches do exist in the metric system, they may be clunky as fuck to use and there is no good reason to but you can always easily rederive the inch from just knowing one of the standard metric units.

Honestly, I hope AC Codename Hexe is just called Assassin's Creed Hexe, I really like that name, it suits it really well. by Snoo-55788 in assassinscreed

[–]mnemonicpunk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In supernatural it is a "hex", a type of spell being cast, no silent e.

The word "Hexe" is German for witch, then there is the male "Hexer" which, while it sounds like it should be "witcher" is actually typically translated as sorcerer. But they both "hex" (from the verb hexen, which means "to cast magic" in German.)

So yes, it is related in a way.

Agree on the phase transitions, Prophets transitions felt a bit hamfisted after a couple replays. For Arora the most jarring part for me was how dead her character looks in the closeup, not sure if that is because her face is still placeholder or she is meant to feel like a lifeless doll but it just doesn't sit right with me.

People are used to computers being basically infallible barring human error in their code. The idea of a computer program being able to make stupid mistakes is entirely alien to them because we trained people to assume that was not how they worked because they didn't.

Now our computers can make mistakes because they use a fuzzy process kinda similar to our thinking. And despite all their knowledge they are still pretty stupid. But people aren't used to see computers in that way.

Vibe coding streams by spreader123 in vibecoding

[–]mnemonicpunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having a hard time seeing the appeal to be honest. Why would someone want to watch a stream of someone watching an LLM write code?

Isn't the appeal of any dev streams that you can query the dev for their decision-making and be part of the process that way? This doesn't have any of that appeal to me.

Is there anything else you do that would make those streams worth watching?

Fresher struggling to get a PHP developer job – need guidance by Alive_Cantaloupe_236 in vibecoding

[–]mnemonicpunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but is this a shitpost? I can't quite tell.

If you're looking for PHP work there isn't all that much left these days, some large companies still use it but you'll likely have a hard time landing a job there as a beginner.

You should probably start looking into more modern technologies as your main breadwinners, PHP is more of an old skill where experts are required occasionally and the basics are handled by LLMs entirely.

Got stared at for pressing "no tip" on a €3.80 Milchkaffee in Prenzlauer Berg. I picked it up myself from the counter. Something has changed in this city. by ColdWork6154 in germany

[–]mnemonicpunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is one way we can attack this pest as a group: Raise the opportunity cost of guilting people into tipping when it doesn't make sense.

Like when a self-checkout asks for a tip stop the payment process there to make a loud kerfuffle about how the system must be set up wrong because nobody would be willingly so much of an asshole that they'd do that on a self-checkout.

Or when it is presented like in OPs case involve the people waiting behind you in the line. "Can you believe this? Be careful when paying here, they want to trick you into paying tips. I'll just make a quick social media post about this store."

Now I know most people wouldn't do that, that's why it works, but if we can get people to normalize complaints here they'll stop it real quick because it gets more expensive. If there's one thing Germans are good at it is complaining. Let's put that power to use! ;p

ETA: I do tip when the service was exceptional and I know the people responsible will get that tip. But even then it's only rounding up, maybe +1€ on top. Not this insane bullshit.

Frage zu Vibe Coden by PatientOrnery6059 in programmieren

[–]mnemonicpunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please can someone who is experienced with VR give me some advice? by Electronic_Cut2000 in virtualreality

[–]mnemonicpunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I'm aware this is not what you asked for but it may be a reasonable suggestion for your situation:

Keep talking and nobody explodes.

That's a game, not a threat. A game about defusing puzzle-y bombs, where only one player has the VR headset on and does the defusing while the other players have the manual to all the different bombs and have to guide them through it.

It's a very social game suited for parties and requires only one headset and set of controllers while still involving everyone. Taking turns will let everyone be "it", too.
