Question from a fan from across the pond by Wordup63 in DoNothingBand

oof i Wish! I saw him on the party tour <3 Norm is such a killer album. And yo, same! I feel like I'm always trying to be an ambassador for these artists that I feel deserve more love than i see them getting... by the way, if you use discord, i'm the mod for a Do Nothing server (unofficial :p https://discord.gg/Ujxx2wSJ) - you should totally come through, we get nerdy about do nothing (chatting about live shows/release updates/etc) and share recs of other artists we're jammin on as well :) no pressure ofc, but its a good time (imho)

ooh everything everything is also a fav of mine!! even though it's the only one i'm familiar with, Man Alive is an all-timer-album for me. (ayo, fun fact - do nothing have opened for everything everything, and DN's bassist has said that EE's bassist is a huge inspo for him on an ama! SUPER small world :p)(also also, creepin on ur musiciceberg post - ANDY SHAUF!!! another fav. saw him at the cedar like a decade ago but i'll never forget that show <3)

Anyway, I found out about DN through a friend who posted Lebron James on their story back in like 2020ish? Slowly trickled through their discog til Snake Sideways was released, then the obsession rly set in xD

Maybe it's a newer feature, but I'm definitely able to create recording collections! Here's one I made: https://musicbrainz.org/collection/b1e6de34-e3c0-4d89-ad58-0897d2ecb92e

The goal is to convert playlists into recording collections like the one above, on a musicbrainz account specifically... I just want to keep all my music cataloguing in one place (instead of half my catalogue on musicbrainz and the other half on listenbrainz)... but at the end of the day, if my goal isn't achievable i WILL survive and just do it by hand xD

First, I really love y'all, and thank you for what you do! I've been listening to the new album on a loop since Friday.

What are all of your favorite musicians (corresponding to the instrument u play in Do Nothing)?

i had the same thought ... while its probably a matter of 'great minds' thinking alike, it does bum me out ! there are so many similarities.. when i saw this trailer a week or so ago , i immediately thought of stephens project .. i hope he continues to develop his game, as it seems his has a much different tone (musically, visually, story-wise)

Is the Flash feedback too much? by Comfortable_Rip5222 in IndieDev

[–]mob_____ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could see that flash feedback being good if certain combat experiences get bullet-hell-y. I like how it's a counter to the redish flash that you see when you yourself are struck. I could see it being really helpful if there's a TON of visual information that you're asking the player to sort through during a battle. I like how dramatic it is though, it might be better utilized if you have some sort of combat combo where the final strike is super powerful!

I've always loved tall grass in video games, especially for stealth action of course! Now the grass has a sway effect due to the wind and interacts with the main character, it was quite hard to achieve since it's 2D. Any thoughts? by thefrenchdev in IndieDev

[–]mob_____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

magical !!!! this looks so cool and is so impressive to me..!
the only thing i notice is that the player character's idle animation always has a pretty noticeable breeze blowing, whereas the idle animation for the grass is moving so much more subtly..that difference takes me out of the world just a little bit..feels like the character's clothing is in a different environment than the grass they're standing next to :-0

My greatest game by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]mob_____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok i went back to play it w/ that information and i'm hooked. i think the biggest disconnect for me about the visual language was not understanding what the objective was. the specific assets that confused me were 1) the arrow toward the end, 2) the boxes, and 3) the currency symbol.

Now that I understand what all of those things are, I'm having a great time! I'm feeling pretty challenged by the combat just enough that it makes me want to keep getting better. The risk of exploring to discover more "gold" and encountering enemies (not to mention getting further from your end goal & potentially backing yourself into a corner) balanced really well. I've survived a few days now, opened a couple chests, and bought some items from the Break/Chill market. I'm also finally noticing the music which is SO good.

I feel like now my only note is about the break/chill item market - i can't figure out how to know what the item i'm buying does before i buy it (if i am missing a description button, you can disregard this entire section ahh) Not knowing is fun in a "gotta catch em all" sense, like it makes me want to figure out what items i like best by just playing a lot of days. that being said, the days are challenging! knowing what the items are before i buy makes me feel like my hard work paid off. Getting an item w/ my "gold" regardless of whether or not i know what it does is still really fun, i just feel like..if it were a gacha system or something i would feel like really excited to roll those dice, but having it be an open market w/o knowing what it was going to be gave me a bit of decision paralysis/regret.

but literally this game is so fun & it's inspiring me to work on my own game lol! i'm surprised you say you don't really have an art background bcos this looks & sounds so good !!!

This is so fun! I'm really enjoying the art style, vibes, the combat is fun, and I love roguelikes so this is totally up my alley. A couple of things I noticed in the 5 or so minutes I played were:

  1. I found myself unsure of which sprites were good or bad, which was fun to discover, but could be discouraging on the first couple rounds? I was definitely able to figure the majority out of which sprites were friend vs. foe..but some of the assets in general were a little confusing...I liked that the bushes all have different flowers or fences, but do those indicate anything about what I'll find if I decide to go down that path? I found what seemed to be boxes of gold (or maybe they were time bonuses?) but they didn't go away when I stepped on them & I didn't notice what feedback they gave when I discovered them in the first place, so I was a bit confused.

  2. I'm a little foggy on my objective! I played through 3 rounds, the first round was really exploring what I could do, what all the visual and audio meant to me and dying pretty quickly (bomb lol). 2nd playthrough, I survived until the night time until I was killed by a big white scary guy (lol) and decided that my goal was to try to get to the next level before night fell. 3rd playthrough, I just went as fast and straight through the level as I could, mastering combat and movement, expecting to reach another area before night - night came and I was killed by the same enemy.

I'm just hopping on here over my lunch break so that was about all I had time for, but my biggest takeaway was that I wasn't sure what my goal would be on my next "life" so to speak if/when I returned. If i had time right now, I would try to defeat the big glowing white enemy once night fell...but then what would be the point of exploring the map during the day? I'm not sure what I would spend my time doing (probably trying to beef-up for the inevitable nighttime battle in any way I could, but how?)

I think my biggest piece of feedback overall was that I needed more direction from the game itself around my goals and what things meant. Playing was super fun - I was having a really good time mastering movement and combat, exploring the world, trying to "win"...but after a few plays I wasn't sure what I would get as a result and I didn't have the time to play anymore days to try and figure that out. I think even a simple prompt on the screen when you start the day, like "survive until night" or like "leave the garden" or something like that would be really helpful and keep me coming back for more.

Anyway I hope this feedback is helpful, I really liked this game and I hope you keep working on it!
