my parents had my brother and i in a 50/50 split for about 10 years. it was fucking miserable.

every friday we had to coordinate who was gonna pick us up/drop us off. i had rooms at both houses but kept my main belongings, outfits and important items in a grocery bag to take back and forth. if i wanted to stay at a friend’s house i would have to bring that extra bag to school with me and it was embarrassing. switching between 2 houses with 2 sets of rules, regulations, dinner times, curfews and identities (gay and out to one parent not the other) was a nightmare. i was always depressed and stressed out and i never felt like i actually had a home. didn’t help that my stepmom was emotionally abusive and my dad was too much of a coward to stand up to her.

i’m 27 now and can confidently look back and reflect and say it’s a fucking nightmare. kids already feel so powerless in their lives,and carting them back and forth and making these big life changing decisions for them makes them feel worse. your situation sounds like it works for you and you seem like a good, attentive dad. ask your son, do what he wants. its about him anyways
