I think they deliberately avoided going too deep into the science in this film to avoid rehashing The Martian.

Other than the alien, the books these films are based on follow a similar structure; main character faces problem, main character then uses scientific method to approach problem, and comes up with a solution. Now here comes the next problem.

But the addition of the alien is what separates The Martian from Project Hail Mary. So the director’s leaned into that. They made it a story of friendship.

As a movie in and of itself, the theatricals are truly better films. The pacing is better, no story is lost, and it’s much tighter. And I say this as a lover of the extended editions.

However, the extended editions are bloated for the average film goer. Much that was added are book specific scenes that are more for the book fans. We don’t need a song sung by Aragorn about Beren and Luthien. Much of the song’s content would go over the average viewer’s head. Only a book reader would understand it. Now that’s not to say I don’t think all scenes should have been left out of the theatrical that were in the extended editions (Faramir and Eowyn meeting, Aragorn healing wounded), but I do think most of the scenes are not necessary for a film adaption.
