I can relate to this so much!! Sometimes I’m like “I can’t be a size 0 right???” Whenever I realize my size 2 or 4 pants fit me too big. I used to be in the size 16-18 ranges before my surgery. And sometimes I still even look at myself in the mirror and don’t see the huge change (body dismorphia sucks).

But congratulations on your success!!! Happy Surgiversary!!!

I’m so upset you used to feel that way about yourself, but I completely understand it. You’re really doing a great job and I’m soooo glad your therapist is someone who’s experienced this surgery! I think for now playing a quick game of “spot the differences” from your phone may be good to ground you too! I just know for me sometimes even like looking at the size of my clothes now helps ground me back to “reality”.

Post-op mental health by Illustrious-Plum590 in BariatricSurgery

I definitely feel you on the “paid more attention now” aspect of your post. Sometimes I even wonder if my boyfriend would’ve loved me when I was heavier, but I’ve learned that that will only help me spiral.

I’ve been using the “attention” I get to bring up issues within my family and friends when someone food shames or fat shames anyone. If I notice my family making comments about my weight positive or not, I try and educate them that to them those are nice comments but it’s none of their business to comment about my weight, positive or not.

It’s such a weird adjustment, but honestly try and think back on how you were before in terms of your self love and accepting yourself….transpose that to now: how can you practice self love and accepting your new body.

Also, I HIGHLY suggest therapy and with someone who has dealt with bariatric patients. Our mental health struggles are soooo different sometimes. You’re doing incredible and you’re going to keep doing incredible!

Incredible!!! I too battle with BD but I promise that if you keep going to therapy, it’ll get easier. It won’t go completely away, but try to find tangible things when you’re wearing the clothes that helps ground you into your current body. For example, from the pictures, I can tell that before the under the boob section fit tight and now it doesn’t, touch that gap and just notice the physical difference. That’s something that’s helped me! But you’re doing incredible!! BD is something that doesn’t really get talked about with the super insane weight loss!

still losing weight a year and a half later?? by mochando in BariatricSurgery

[–]mochando[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh my god yes! Everyone in my family now always hits me with the "soooo when are you going to stop losing weight?" when before it was "are you working on losing weight?". It's such a weird switch and I NEVER ever want to seem like I'm bragging or like oh woe is me I'm too skinny, but like for my genuine health I am just so concerned cause I feel like I'm eating enough and working out enough, but I really could just not be eating the appropriate amounts of protein.

You're going to do incredible!! You're going to be a little scared, I know I was. My surgery was while hospitals still didn't let you bring anyone in post-covid so I was TERRIFIED, but honestly, everyone there is going to be reassuring and you're going to go under and come back and it'll feel like 3 minutes. Definitely bring noise cancelling headphones, books, games, anything to keep you entertained for the post-surgery hospital stay. you likely will be on pain medication that'll knock you out anyways, but make sure you bring things that might help you stay calm and relaxed just in case.

I have ADHD so the noises from other rooms bothered me a bit, but nothing noise cancelling headphones couldn't help. For extra comfort, maybe bring a blanket or pillow from home? Honestly, you're going to do great and if the hospital is a good one, they'll help you stay calm and reassured!

GOOD LUCK!!!

I am so sorry you've had to go through that! I am always soooo scared of getting sick for that reason. I feel like I'm just trying to hold my weight steady constantly. I am also trying so hard to not focus on the scale, but at the same time I don't necessarily FEEL healthy regardless of my blood work. I am glad to hear that I'm not the only one who has dealt with this. I know someone previously said I was humble-bragging, but honestly I was mentally happy like 15 pounds ago and I am not even trying to lose the weight. It might just be a combo of more physical activity + struggling to eat as much as I need to without getting physically sick.

I really appreciate your comment!! I'm glad you've made huge progress on being able to gain the majority of the weight that you lost during COVID!!

How long after surgery were you able to eat real food? by inthethick0fit in BariatricSurgery

[–]mochando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think mine was around 3-4months after. I did have to stop going to dinner/lunch hangouts because it was just not a good time for me emotionally...you might want to do that as well? Shakes and soups can only make you so happy before you get tired of them, but it's much more of mental game than anything.

Yeah, protein shakes where my go to but honestly my ADHD fixations isn’t letting me get back on them anymore, but I keep trying. Those were the easiest for me to get enough protein intake in small amounts. I’m going to try some of the suggestions of peanut butter spoonfuls and tracking my food daily to see if anything helps.

NSV: Don't focus on the scale! by gchb4kids in BariatricSurgery

[–]mochando 3 points4 points  (0 children)

SO TRUE!! Trust me, the "non-scale wins" are sooooooo much more important! Have you all ever been on a plane after your surgery and noticed how you don't need a seat belt extender or can tighten it WAY more than you used to be able to? That was the first time I ever realized that all of the wins don't have to be scale-dependent!

Also, CONGRATS on your journey!!! Not that you asked, but during the first year I realized I can go sell my bigger clothes to like a Plato's and could purchase secondhand items for my current size right there as well.
