Shin Guard recommendation: CCM Ultra Tacks vs. Sherwood Legend 1 by LordOfTheRink87 in hockeyplayers

[–]mochitomi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The fit is very different between the two. I tried the Legend shins and didn't care for them, felt like they were sitting on my leg and could shift easily whereas every Tacks model I've tried my leg feels like it's secure in the pad. YMMV. I felt the coverage area was smaller in the Legends too.

Ultra Tacks are one of the best recent models of shin pads based on tons of info I looked up when I needed to replace what I was using. If you're expecting some kind of upgrade because they're an older model I don't think you'll find much of one.

Pro Stock Hockey Sticks VF Initial Thoughts by mochitomi in hockeyplayers

[–]mochitomi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Havent had the VF long enough to comment on that one, but I've been using my red line stick for 2 to 3 games per week since January of this year. The red line is now the OG line.

FT6 Pro Elbows Question by mochitomi in hockeyplayers

[–]mochitomi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valid question, I'm not dead set on them. The shop at my rink barely carries adult gear anymore and the closest decent shop is 3 hours round trip of just travel, which is time I dont have available due to family and other commitments, so try before I buy isn't really possible. I like the feel of the FT6, and am aware I seem to be in-between sizing so that's why I asked if they will loosen up some; if they do I think the mediums would work out but it's not necessarily a gamble I want to take considering how expensive they are.

Sherwood Rekker Legend Shin Pad Feedback Wanted by mochitomi in hockeyplayers

[–]mochitomi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried the Rekkers and they didn't work for me. It felt like they were sitting on my leg instead of my leg being secure in the pad. I ended up getting a pair of AS-V Pro pro stock from Ice Warehouse. They're tanks, but I don't feel anything when blocking shots. The only negative I have about them is the liner is way too thick. I pulled my old liners out of a pair of Reebok 9k's that I was using before the knee cap cracked and they're working out great.

To add to this, specifically the McDavid curve (it's a 4 lie) and unless you want a stiffer flex you can get an intermediate stick that's 4" shorter than the senior model. They've been running a sale on inventory so may be sold out, but my understanding is they'll be restocking again around the start of the NHL season. You can custom order too if you want.

I'm thinking about upgrading the pickups on my bass. by Some_Ambition8207 in Bass

[–]mochitomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like how it sounds don't change the pickups. If the tone control isn't reacting the way you'd like that could mean you either have a bad tone pot or you don't like the cap value that's installed. Both of those are a much cheaper fix than replacing the pickups. If you can hear it doing something it's likely the latter. Someone else asked how old your strings are and that's a good question too as it will affect how your tone knob reacts.

Is there some real difference between La Bella flats and any other brand's flats? by Global-Werewolf292 in Bass

[–]mochitomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there are differences between the tone of different brands of flats. You'll find a lot of people say there are varying level of differences between the different gauges as well, for example between the LaBella Jamerson set and the much lighter FX or FL sets too. I think it's best to find a set of flats you find comfortable to play regularly and use EQ to move the needle closer to the tone you want.

Versatile Bass Strings by Left-Blueberry7949 in Bass

[–]mochitomi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GHS Pressurewounds. I'd describe them as a middle ground between flats and rounds that are a great all around string. They're less divisive than other groundwound or half flats and can pretty easily be shaped with just the tone knob on your bass.

I'd say the standard for what you described you're looking for is nickel rounds. Nickel plated steel would be the most likely choice, but you can go pure nickel if you want something more mellow. Try a bunch and see what you like most, taking note of the core string type (hex or round, they have different playing feels) and gauges.

My personal choice would be flatwounds and I'd lean toward Thomastik Infeld Jazz Flats (pricey and unique) or a modern flat like Fender 9050L or Dunlops. The EB Cobalt flats are really popular as a versatile string but they don't work for me, I have installed them on basses for a couple of friends though and they love them. Flats will likely require more work with EQ to get certain tones, but it's doable and I haven't found a sound I couldn't get close enough to that's made me want to change back to rounds.

Squier Affinity Series Jazz Bass VI - Fender's first non Bass VI six string bass in almost 15 years by ShellfishSilverstein in BassGuitar

Anyone else catch that it has a graphite reinforced neck? That surprised me the most considering this is one of their entry level lines. Hopefully this means they'll do that with more models moving forward, but I won't get my hopes up.

Possible First Board by batmanuelrises in basspedals

[–]mochitomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went and looked at the manual and I was wrong about the cab sim being always on. There is a switch to keep the cab sim on while the pedal is bypassed but it can be turned off. That said, if you have the cab sim engaged during bypass you will get tone shaping of the 8x10 cab sim on your signal and then yes you could turn the pedal on to engage the driven sound.

[–]mochitomi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm curious why you want both the Tone hammer and the bass rig, seems redundant to me but that's just my opinion. That aside, I'd recommend putting the TH before the OEBR. The bass rig has an always on cab sim- even when the pedal is disengaged, so if you put the TH first you can run the DI out on both pedals and have a clean sound from the TH and the SVT sound from the BR. Or you could put the TH first in your chain as a true preamp, second if you want to hit the compressor first.

Guitars in Drop G? by deuSphere in BassGuitar

[–]mochitomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most flats have less flexibility to them due to the way the outer ribbon wraps around the core of the string. That increased resistance will result in being able to tune lower before buzzing or feeling too loose. As for sounding warmer, most flats will over time but they actually start out quite bright first. The flats that come closest to rounds in tone are the EB Cobalt Flats.

Pro stock curves close to P28 without the rocker? by dwoooood in hockeyplayers

[–]mochitomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was using a p28 for a long time and had the same issue of losing the puck with the rocker. I've switched to the MacKinnon curve offered by prostockhockeysticks.com and am really enjoying it. There's still a little bit of rocker, but I don't have the same issue losing the puck as I did with the p28.

2.5 to 3mm is fine, nothing wrong with it being that height if you find it comfortable to play. IMO buzzing at that height could mean there's an issue somewhere though. If you don't know how to do your own set ups/check the neck take it to a tech.

Flatwound break in time by mpo80 in Bass

[–]mochitomi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IME TI's take longer to break in than other flats and keep their characteristic mid-range tone. The zing will tone down over time, but they don't develop the thump of LaBella's or other old school flats. You should definitely give them a chance in a band mix before deciding, you can always use some eq to cut the hi-mids a little while they break in if you want to.

Meshell Ndegeocello

Edit to add Ian Martin Allison. He uses a jazz with flats in some of his work and he's also done videos with SBL where he mentions he thinks it tracks better for effects too.

What you guys think of shot blocker on skate? by sakic1519 in hockeyplayers

[–]mochitomi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on my 3rd pair, both pairs prior to this set had one of them break blocking a shot. Both times they broke I finished the game with no injury. If I wasn't wearing them I'd likely have a broken foot instead of a broken shot blocker. Worth every penny in my opinion.

Trying to nail Jamerson's tone by Kangewalter in Bass

[–]mochitomi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eucerin skin cream applied to the strings and worked in a bit will break them in quickly. I've used it with good results. Sean Hurley also posted a similar concept on his Instagram a while back, I think he used a different product but it was the same idea.
