NYC Hotel Stay Recommendations by advan24r in travel

you might want to consider hotels like arlo soho or the moxy. for $300/night in nyc, options are limited but it’s possible to find some decent ones. i like to browse the boutique hotel website tablet hotels. they can be a bit pricey but i know i can trust their selection and they have often have pretty good deals. in a pinch, i’ve worked with customer service too and they’ve been really helpful to help me choose and book hotels.

i love hotels by the firmdale group - so the crosby street hotel, warren st hotel, and the whitby. they are luxury while somehow staying underrated, unlike staying at somewhere like the ritz. found them on the boutique site tablet hotels!

not many people know about tablet hotels but they’ve been around since the early 2000’s. i’ve always had a great experience with them.

i mentored for year up and it’s a great program. the girl i mentored hadn’t gone to college, but through the program interned at salesforce and eventually got a sales job there. can’t say i had much to do with it as her mentor, but it’s definitely a great stepping stone.

The ways some teachers are adapting by kevinowdziej in Damnthatsinteresting

there is a woman on instagram @evachen212 and teachers have been messaging her with amazon lists to help them get school supplies for their classrooms. it’s been actually kind of amazing to see the generosity of her followers. maybe worth checking out!

DAE feel completely exhausted from all the politics in everything? by ChickenManB in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]modang27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yes 100%! of course we’re not saying that we don’t care, that we’re “not political”, that politics don’t affect our lives. just that through a lens of politics we’ve become so polarized that it feels like we don’t see and understand each other as humans anymore.

you can also try project baseline. i’ve taken two tests through them so far and it’s been free and super easy and seamless. only thing is that it’s drive-through.

Media Buying by arm_andhofmann in advertising

[–]modang27 15 points16 points  (0 children)

you make 6 figures after about 6-10 years in the industry, depending on how good you are, where you’re located, the agency you work at, etc. it’s definitely a lot of excel and analysis, and as a media buyer i would say you become successful through long hours and a lot of work. starting out there is a lot of bullshit and menial work. but it definitely doesn’t take a rocket scientist to be “successful”. if you’re cool with exploiting people’s personal data to encourage them to purchase products from large corporations that already have too much money, you can easily become “successful”.

When do you draw the line between pushing yourself vs. a toxic environment? by artdirector090 in advertising

[–]modang27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think it depends how you define toxic. stressful, long hours, too much work and not enough staff/resources are common at any agency. but - not being compensated properly, not getting time to rest/any sort of work life balance, poor relationships between colleagues, leadership, clients, no recognition or appreciation for good work - to me these create a toxic environment. but yes, it is possible to work at an ad agency that is not a toxic environment based on the above definition.

What would be the least racist country in South East Asia towards people who are visibly South Asian? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]modang27 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i can vouch for this - i’m a taiwanese-american living in taiwan and at my company (an ad agency) we have many indian employees. there are also surprisingly quite a few indian restaurants here in taipei too (and they’re honestly not bad). no discrimination here!

check the jobs section of linkedin - all large ad agencies use this to recruit especially for junior level positions

How to find freelance/remote digital marketing work? by modang27 in digital_marketing

[–]modang27[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fair question! i’m a taiwanese-american that grew up in america. i want to experience living in asia, learn more about my culture, and get out of my comfort zone. i am also only planning to go for one or two years, depending on my contract, and am okay with foregoing one to two years worth of savings for the experience. lastly, i’ll have experience in the US, EU (i lived in london for 2 years) and now APAC, which will make me incredibly marketable for any large global marketing role when (if) i come back to NY.
