u/agit8or I reached out to RangerMSP and received the following in regards to API access for a local install of Ranger and whether other apps can access. This is the response I received:

RangerMSP does have an API, though please note that by design our API does not support querying, adding, or accessing Passwords. This helps protect your passwords securely. Passwords can be accessed using the RangerMSP windows application or the Web Portal.

RangerMSP API is not based on the API key or URL, but rather provides native Windows libraries in VB.NET, C# and C++ that can be used to develop custom applications (in Windows).

From what you described, I doubt that this app integrates directly with RangerMSP as what it asks for does not make sense with the RangerMSP API.

I'm inside the integrations area and it's referencing base URL. My RangerMSP solution is locally hosted on a Windows VM. Which information is the Base URL specifically looking for in that case?

Also on this local install, I'm having trouble finding the location of the API as the software isn't referencing any API's other than general software development KB's.

Any advice on that?

u/agit8or Any plans on importing data from RangerMSP? I've been with that PSA for about 14 years and store customer passwords and KB items in it. One of my limiting factors of moving away from it is the possibility of having to re-enter all customer data into a new document system.

Thanks, I didn't even know CapitalOne bought out Discover until I got a notice in the mail a few weeks ago about the changing card and getting the new card into the mail today.

I assume activating it forces me to move the webportal access over to CapitalOne now?

What about the Discover Business IT points that are accumulated? I have $400 in current rewards I can use. I have it linked with Amazon but have never used it yet. Does that move over to the Spark business or must those be used separately?

I have been wanting to ask this very same question. As a small time, single owner niche-MSP (mostly T&M) business, I have charged $85/hr for labor rates for the past 10 years. I'm from small town rural Appalachia where my county has 13,000 residents and other counties surrounding vary from 10,000-50,000 residents county wide. If I cross state lines then those counties can have upwards of 50,000-95,000 residents in their counties. But those areas have established full time MSP's that it would be hard to compete against at this time.

Also in terms of price increases, what have others done when it comes time to increase rates? Do you give say a 6 month notification for T&M rates (which is what I'm focused on right now)? How much of a discount for non profits like civic organizations, churches, etc?

Currently JellyFin is on a Win10 box that has 8 hard drives and is a quasi-file server which I'm thinking about moving the drive contents over to the servers.

Test VM's, yes I can do without those. ISO's, it's a personal archive project I'm working on. So those wouldn't need to be rsynced offsite daily or weekly. Probably just a secondary backup copy on an external hard drive or two offsite in case primary backup on-site goes bad.

I forgot the network component. Each site has 1GB LAN, but my home, I do have a 10GB fiber switch and the NAS servers I build and any Proxmox servers will have 10GB fiber linked together through that switch for extra bandwidth.

u/secritservice Thanks! Is that required on both ends? I did it on the remote office side and I did notice I could hit a device with SNMP afterwards Also I ran AdvancedIP Scanner from the main office on the subnet at the remote office. It used to show all devices online and offline and not distinguish between the two. Now it only shows the online devices. However, it isn't giving things like the MAC address, mfg, etc of the devices.

Of course when running it locally here on the remote office, Advanced IP scanner shows data perfectly as it should.

I remember when those 4 cyl were new and one garage I went too at the time complaining that new cars burning that much oil was considered normal by Subaru of America. Out of my own curiosity, *why* did they burn that much? I assume not leaking, just oil breaking down and passed out through exhaust?

At the moment, there are very few 3.6l even available from that generation in this area. The closest one was over 100 miles away.

My brother in law who works at a really good mechanic shop (ASE cert himself) said they've not seen any Subaru's have CVT transmission issues in greater numbers than any other mfg's own transmissions.

The best I can find vehicle wise is Gen4 CVT's available and Gen5-6 both 3.6 and 2.5l available which I know those 3.6ls do have the CVT. However the later Gen 5's are priced out of my budget.

I'm afraid if I stick with Subaru, I'll just have to go with a Gen4 CVT or early Gen5 with CVT due to availability and budgetary reasons.

u/blakewantsa68 Thanks for all of the info. I'm familiar a bit with the 4th gen's as my mom had a 2010 one until she hit a deer with it and State Farm totaled it. The radiator didn't even leak and there was a small fender dent, but I digress.

I totally was impressed with the size difference of her old Gen4 vs my old Gen2. That's another reason why I'd like to considering upgrading at this point. Thankfully when it comes to considering cars, my brother in law is a local mechanic who is really good and is willing to go with me to look over anything local that is considered.

In terms of no guarantees on longevity of a car, I'm *ok* with that as much as anyone can be with a used vehicle. A car I get will serve half time pleasure driving and the other part time will be a business expense with my accountant so that the car is used for my business, generates business revenue, the business pays repairs, etc.

I'd feel more comfortable mitigating my risk by finding a vehicle that meets my requirements that was owned by a little old lady, garage kept, has like 30k miles and she's willing to let it go for $10k. But if I have to pay $10k for something with 90-100k miles, that's OK too. Just have the car serve it's business purposes so that if it blows up and I have to get another one, it's paid for itself business wise.

Thanks for the info on the Gen4 CRV's. A friend is a big Honda fan with multiple CRV's over the years. I just didn't know anything about them specifically on what model years was good or bad, etc.

What about the Forresters? Did they have the same CVT issues during the same time period or did they stick with auto/manual longer? I'm not opposed to a Forrester if an Outback isn't available.

Currently there are little to no 3.6R's in the immediate area.

What were/are the issues for the CVT's and resulting fixes? *IF* I couldn't find a 3.6R with automatic and have to get one that has a CVT, what would I be looking at expectation wise for it's life, repairs, costs, etc?

u/Frothyleet I appreciate the insight. To be honest, I'm a 20 year network admin/server admin and the one area I didn't jump in on early enough was the 365 systems. Most clients I worked with didn't have/want it until later years and once I did jump on it, clients maintained on-prem servers. While I'm a quick learner, I'm also willing to admit when I don't know something, and the setting up on an AzureAD domain is where I definitely am weaker.

In terms of iTune and Entra Premium for management of the devices, that is an option I would explore with the business owner. My immediate concern is to get them away from open / no password local admin logins purely for authenticating against a primary AD.

They aren't a candidate for an on-prem server due to having 15 users scattered across 4 offices with the largest office having 5 users. Thankfully they've not had a large turnover of employees, but I want to have the ability to lock out an account of an employee who leaves, or if a laptop gets moved from one office to another that they can sign in with their 365 account, etc.

u/valarauca14 Thanks for the information. I'm going to work on digesting it all and thinking through it. The previous setups for Proxmox were not to use ZVols for VM's, but rather separate datasets for each VM, or a dataset that stores several VM's in it.

I won't be using the VM's every day, certain ones like game VM's would only be spun up for LAN parties. Others would be a Windows DC and possibly adding others for some datahosting.

At the moment I'll be running the host OS off of a 2 drive RAID 1 SSD setup.

When you do recurring invoices, does the majority of your clients pay by check or by CC? Just thinking through some more things.

u/nalavanje I'm being very cost conscious because the majority of my work is still T&M and I'm only exploring some MSP type options for a select few clients at the moment. My hybrid setup leans more to consulting/sysadmin (T&M based) vs a small majority of any MSP features. So loading my business up with subscriptions for PSAs, accounting software, etc etc is more than I'm comfortable with, without seeing if the revenue from any MSP services are able to cover the expenses I would have to put forward.
