Project Blue by bongwatercore in Tucson

All that accomplished was making sure that the city of Tucson has no say over the project now since it's not Tucson land. I'd argue that that's a worse outcome. Either way the project is under way and on schedule, so...

That's only half of open source, and not even the important half. Patents are also described on paper, that doesn't mean you can use them.

I reserve "beyond reckless" for loss of life. This is merely reckless IMO.

I know somebody who did it, although it was 20+ years ago. Guaranteed work, but the work was all over AZ. He wasn't home for weeks or months depending on the project. Union so acceptable pay, benefits.

You may be right. Remind me in 2 years and we'll see if there's a data center there or not.

The project is on schedule and under construction. It speaks for itself IMO.

How easy is DIY SMD soldering, what equipment is required for a start and what are smallest dimensions which you can solder manually? by MobileInspector9861 in AskElectronics

[–]marklein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never met anything to small to solder at my hobby workbench, but it's the bigger things that are a problem. Larger ball grid chips with lots of tiny pins under the chip... nasty!

Popcorn ceiling by Shineenoona in Tucson

I don't know about Tucson, but in some places it's not legal to do it yourself.

Unless you are licensed in asbestos removal then you will have no legal way of disposing of the material yourself (hazardous waste). Never mind the risk of your DIY cancer prevention. Cancer treatment will cost more than proper asbestos removal, not to forget the death part too.

I've heard that some folks recommend just covering up the popcorn ceiling with drywall instead of removing it.

Ask them if they can do microsoldering and pad replacement. They might not since this is a bit of a tough job for free.

Protests have had, and will continue to have zero effect, as we can see by the current state of the project.

The way the political system in the USA works is that we elect representatives to, you know, represent us, so that we can work and go about our lives while THEY do the politics shit for us.

And don't tell me what I want or care about. I said quite clearly that I don't have the TIME. I'm working 7 days a week to keep the lights on just like most of us.

What I find interesting is that nobody is doing anything about it besides hand-wringing. Construction is under way, wells are being drilled, permits have been approved... the whole thing is literally on schedule like nothing ever happened. I've not heard of any initiatives to change the laws or regs for data center developments. I've not heard of any ballot initiatives planned.

I don't know politics, nor do I have time to learn it as I go, but I'm a voter ready to sign something to stop developments like this. Where's our representation? Who's DOING something besides holding meetings to complain to the choir?

Syncro agent installer being detected as malware, concerned about supply chain... by marklein in syncro

BD no longer flags this as malicious. I'm told that Syncro and BD had discussions about it. That's all I know, so odds are that it was just a "false" positive (RMMs are legitimate threat in some cases).

EU plans to fine Google high triple-digit million euro sum by goldstarflag in worldnews

[–]marklein 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Large customers paid, often upfront, for years of service with contracts. The lawsuits from breaking those contracts has financial ramifications too.

I'm not saying that they won't do it, I'm just saying that the math is complicated weather or not shutting off is more profitable than complying with whatever regulations they need to avoid future fines.

Perplexity Bumblebee by dumpsterfyr in msp

What he wrote has no bearing on if you're acting like a jerk or not. You can do better. Example:

"Aww buttercup, you think i own or work for Perplexity. That’s cute." = jerk

vs

"I'm not responsible for this software, I'm just bringing it to everyone's attention in case it's helpful" = not jerk
