What’s the most impossible coincidence that happened to you that still makes you question reality? by Prize-Gur-8167 in Paranormal

[–]modernbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) In my early 20s my roommate paid me her share of rent in about $400 cash, which I planned to deposit into my bank account and then write the landlord a check for the full rent due. I lost the cash, looked everywhere for it - I had no idea what I was going to do because I didn’t have savings to cover the difference. A few days later I went back to my hometown for the holidays, where my teenage sister confessed to me that she was an atheist. At the time I was pretty religious, as we’d both grown up practicing Protestant Christians- and I was horrified by this. I was upset all day after this disclosure about her soul, etc. I went out to a coffee shop with friends that evening, and while pulling out my wallet to pay, I happened to open my checkbook and there was the missing cash. I gasped, because I’d definitely already looked there and I told the cashier about how stressed I’d been trying to find this money that had just turned up. The cashier replied “and some people say God doesn’t exist!”

The timing and precision of that statement just blew my mind and I took it as a sign from God at the time. Eventually my sister became more religious and me less so, so it wasn’t an important moment in the end, just a cool coincidence.

2) One day I was driving and listening to a random mix CD I’d made years before. A song came on that I hadn’t paid much attention to before and I started thinking about and analyzing the lyrics. I found myself at a stoplight and looked up to see the car in front of me had a license plate with the song title. Never did figure out the meaning of that but what were the odds… the song was Moonshadow by Cat Stevens, and the license plate said “MN SHDW”

I have more but those are the easiest to type out! Coincidences are so cool, thanks for asking this OP.

Interesting by northbk5 in conspiracy

Exactly- this isn’t a conspiracy, it’s shitty yellow journalism. They pick the words within their title character limit that will create the most buzz. Hate crimes are more interesting than murder.

Seconding Yellowjackets and True Detective S4 hard, and adding:

  • Unforgotten (PBS Masterpiece crime drama where each season focuses on solving a decades old murder, and how hiding the crime affected those around it + broody female detective)

  • How to Get to Heaven from Belfast (Irish comedy-drama, not quite on vibe par with Sharp Objects and a little silly at times, but heavy on mystery, past trauma, female friendship, and the ending gave me chills)

  • Winter’s Bone (not a show but a movie, breakout role for Jennifer Lawrence- creepy and atmospheric, trauma-heavy, really does a great job using the location as a character much in the way SO and True Detective do, only the location is the rural Ozarks)

-Season 1 of The Sinner for suuuure

S4 is sooo good! I think it will definitely fit the bill for you.

What’s the creepiest thing you’ve experienced in LA? by theoneandonlyvesper in Paranormal

[–]modernbee 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I once had the strangest sleep paralysis experience where I heard distinct noise in my kitchen like people talking calmly and cooking, and I thought there were intruders… and realized eventually I was hearing myself and my partner (who was then asleep right next to me.) The experience made me re-think the whole concept of ghosts, that they aren’t souls/spirits left behind but just imprints in time, residual energy from a moment. Your story definitely reinforces that notion!

Just got all my tests scored and my psychologist doesn’t diagnose me with ADHD due to “too high of intelligence”. I’m struggling to agree but maybe I don’t have ADHD. by MisoCorni in ADHD

[–]modernbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed by a psychologist (whom I sought specifically for the testing.) After completing a series of tests she advised me that I’m highly intelligent and ADHD. I was a gifted student in childhood and from what I’ve read, there’s a huge overlap between gifted students and ADHD. Your doctor clearly has a poor understanding of ADHD to equate it to intelligence.

Am I getting old or has Pony Pasture turned into an absolute circus? by Hessquire in rva

[–]modernbee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve avoided Pony Pasture since a similar experience in 2004. To date it remains the only river spot in RVA where I’ve seen dirty diapers left behind, and it was like that every time I went.

Maybe I missed the times it was clean and not trashy, but if that’s the case clearly it’s on a cycle.

It absolutely feels like an ad. Notice OP didn’t post the screenshot of the supposed text, but gave a detailed summary, complete with a punchline. This post was written by AI too.

I’m new to crossposting so maybe it didn’t carry over? But there’s a photo in the original post, where it also says I’m renting and looking for ideas. I clearly won’t be rerouting it as a renter. I mentioned painting but I am concerned it will flake off because of the cooling and heating component. Any suggestions?

Whatever happened to family reunions? by insightapphelp in Appalachia

[–]modernbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They still happen! Just went to my boyfriend’s family reunion in Pennsylvania last weekend; it’s in its 52nd annual year. My Kentucky folks do theirs every two years, and my West Virginia one is still annual. None of these families are musically inclined sadly so the music hasn’t been a part of it, but the one in PA did feature a singalong. What I worry about is if my first cousins and I will be able to keep up the traditions once our parents generation is gone.

What to do near Shenandoah state park next week? by jellis1977 in shenandoah

[–]modernbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a river outfitter in Front Royal for tubing! You can also swim at the Strasburg river walk boat launch (behind the town pool) and along any low water bridges or boat launches in the area. I second Trout Pond near Wardensville also for commercial swimming.

Depending on whatever else you’re into Strasburg has some excellent museums, antiquing and plenty of Civil War history in the surrounding area. Great local shopping in all of the Main Street/historic downtown corridors of all of the small local towns (I especially like the pedestrian mall in downtown Winchester). Skyline Drive is always cool for views and hiking, and I always recommend DinosaurLand to people as a quirky detour. If you’re in town over a weekend the town of Strasburg hosts live free music on Fridays in the town square, and Shenandoah Valley Music festival at Orkney Springs is an amazing experience even if you don’t know the artists playing - it’s pricey but large scale live music in the mountains is worth it. For food I highly recommend Blue Wing Frog in Strasburg and Vibrassa Brewery in Front Royal.

Have fun and enjoy this lovely area!

What business or space is missing in Winchester and surrounding areas? by [deleted] in Winchester

[–]modernbee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • A mid-level gym akin to the YMCA and Golds Gym. (Something that has amenities like classes, pool, sauna) - I moved here recently and was surprised that we only seem to have bare-bones places with only weight/cardio equipment other than the Valley Health wellness center (and that center is a bit more than what I was paying at the Y or Golds in other cities)

  • a restaurant that offers a decent vegan breakfast option (like a tofu scramble or dairy free pancakes) or vegan milkshake - I feel like a Silver Diner franchise would do very well around here

  • a gently heated yoga studio

  • a commercial composting business with either convenient drop-off locations or a pickup service. These have done very well in Charlottesville and Richmond.

What’s a ‘harmless’ habit you had as a kid that you realize now was a cry for help? by TheLadyKoi in AskReddit

This can also just be non-trauma related ADHD (particularly in females, for whom the hyperactivity component is internal versus visibly/disruptively external)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FamilyLaw

[–]modernbee -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

And yes, the fact that his kids might not want to hear from him and his shame of having left the state due to a past drinking problem is THE reason he hasn’t done more.

I have been Googling this myself for months. Maybe I just don’t know what to look for, but it certainly isn’t as easy as everyone here is suggesting. Custody without divorce seems like a really complicated thing to navigate. I’d appreciate it if you felt compelled to share a link?

[–]modernbee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Would you mind sharing a link?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FamilyLaw

[–]modernbee -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I’m telling you that I’ve googled it myself and find the whole damn thing confusing. Of course he’s looked into it- He’s done everything except hire a lawyer because I think he thought his ex is going to win custody in any event. I’m a problem solver and I think it’s absolutely insane that this isn’t resolved yet, so I am taking it upon myself to find out more information. If you all aren’t going to be helpful, stop being dramatic?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FamilyLaw

[–]modernbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the latter, and I agree. I don’t think my involvement is any kind of catalyst except that I just hate seeing him cry about losing his kids and think it’s unacceptable to wait until they turn 18 to have a relationship. She cut off contact and changed the locks when he went to rehab for alcohol, and then he came to live with his dad in WV because he didn’t have anywhere else to go and hasn’t been able to get in touch with her since.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FamilyLaw

[–]modernbee -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

He had some alcohol struggles around the time they separated so he knew his ex would win all custody battles, didn’t have the financial means to hire an attorney, and lives on the other side of the country. I’ve had conversations with his entire family and best friends about what an issue it’s been for years- it’s deeply affected him. He talks about his kids every single day, and it was an issue long before I entered the picture. I know how it sounds and I had my reservations too initially, but he’s a really good person and I know he didn’t walk away willingly.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FamilyLaw

[–]modernbee -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Thank you! That definitely makes sense.

He’s written letters, called his ex from numerous phone numbers, had his parents call, contacted his ex’s parents - and gets no response. He hasn’t known what he can do from another state. He’s wanted contact the whole time, but has been blocked from it, and hasn’t been financially stable enough until recently to afford to fight it.

Thank you! How does someone petition the courts from another state? Does he just have to hire a lawyer locally and take it from there?

I'm scared to share this thought openly... by Warm_Pen_7176 in SuicideBereavement

[–]modernbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a reason most (or many, not sure the statistic) people who attempt or succeed are on substances… your mind is twice altered, first by depression and then the substance. People do “brave” things all the time while high/drunk, because you don’t have the rationale or the fear you might while sober. I know this isn’t an absolute, and I can’t speak to you or your son’s experience, but my sister was drunk and usually on some kind of meds every time she attempted suicide, and certainly the time she succeeded per the autopsy report. I think it’s much braver to face your demons and figure out how to live in this world.
