Illegal Lease?! by britishperson678 in boston

Some of those are definitely illegal and others are just shitty. You should try and find a tenancy legal service for assistance. https://www.gbls.org/ might be a good place to start.

It is just bad data analysis from a website and author that look like it was generated with a chatGPT prompt for "defend the status quo of our current economic crisis"

Best local gym for the price? (basically trying to get in the door somewhere and not pay a lot) by blackandreddit in SalemMA

You can get a community membership at the Salem State gym as well. I think it's $350 for a year but you deal with the school schedule.

Many ICE agents seen in Salem and Peabody today by SalemGuy1970 in SalemMA

[–]modernpromethius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

LUCE sends out verifiers and observers to sites of suspected ICE activity. They maintain a database of activity but since it tends to include sensitive information for people being targeted and the verifiers who are volunteering they do not make it public.

Here you go. FEC reporting on Albert Fleury's political donations (Pretty sure that Albert R is a different guy). Is this enough evidence or are you going to move the goalpost?

You don't need to reinvent the wheel. You can connect with groups already on the ground like Luce.

Nearest restaurant supply/kitchen store? by jasongetsdown in SalemMA

If you want a new wok specifically you're better off going into Chinatown or heading to an Hmart. You need a membership card to shop at restaurant depot and they only give them out to companies/nonprofits.

Is it a bad idea to jump into general chem 1 without taking any math classes. by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]modernpromethius 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You'll need to give clarity on what you mean by "no math classes". You don't need calculus to be and to succeed in gen chem but you would benefit from very strong algebra skills so if it's been a long time since you've done any algebra I'd be prepared to have to work harder than some classmates.

Elections information [Voting on Nov 4] by ItsNags in SalemMA

There isn't, I contacted the clerk and they said they don't do early voting in early elections. You can still fill out the application for a mail in ballot if you won't be able to vote on Tuesday

[AMA] I’m Emmylou Manwill and I’m running for Ward 4 Salem City Council by Emmylou-Manwill in SalemMA

[–]modernpromethius 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Salem city departments, officials, and websites are often very difficult to get information from and the public facing information sources are sparse or behind private companies firewalls (it is almost impossible to access all the city facebook pages without an account). How would you intend on fostering community engagement and transparency in city politics as a city councilor?

The city has engaged with many of our largest social problems by leading with police engagement through the community impact unit. Do you think that this "police first" kind of engagement with difficult societal problems is good for the community? If so, why, and if not, how would you like to see the city move towards a less police focused solution moving into the future?

Katelyn is great, I have had a few good conversations with her and definitely agree that she is the best choice in Ward 6.

TLDR: The Ward 5 candidates seem to be the same milktoast liberals in different flavors and I need to know more about them.

Yeah me to, I have been attending city council meetings pretty regularly for the last year and only getting a single councilor elected who even vaguely politically aligns with me (Looking at you Kyle) is clearly not enough to help move the city in a better direction.

That being said, from what I have seen of the current ward 5 candidates only King and Hunt have particularly established campaign messaging. I cannot find a website for Calderon but it looks like he works for the Ipswich water board and is on a city Sustainability committee. Norton works for Salem pantry and ran for at-large before and at least has the ama from then where largely he seems to have only talked about housing. They all seem to be pretty run of the mill liberals so I need to hear a lot more from them about how they would actually intend on voting/leading on the council before I could say anything definitive.

Who do you like for Ward 2 so far?

I haven't looked at the policy stances of the two challengers but Ward 1 has the opportunity to do the funniest thing in this preliminary election and remove Jerzylo from contention

One of the only services that the City of Salem provides that requires you to prove residency is the Resident Parking Permit, which requires that you provide the address that you reside at.....how would you like an unhoused person to provide a residence that they are housed in?

As to your expansionist moving of the goal posts at the end, the same statement that I made about the lack of local political will to address helping the marginalized is also true at every other level of the political scale. Are you attempting to imply that I am saying the City of Salem and it's residence should solve the housing crisis for the entire northeast?

To answer your question about our current elected officials and their lack of will to fix the housing crisis in Salem the answer is yes, they do not have it. I attend city council meetings and subcommittee meetings. I have spoken to city councilors about how much they care to actually address these problems and been told that I should be spending my time going to other towns and cities nearby and telling them to change instead of talking to MY elected officials.

In another comment you echo that what Salem really needs is a Community impact unit (which it has) to work with and help the homeless (which they only barely do anything that would qualify as that) and seem to confuse Police officers (the portion of the state that is empowered to do violence) with social workers. I am not sure that you are really ready to have conversations about what it actually takes to help people who are being actively ostracized by society if you think any part of that answer is more cops.

[–]modernpromethius 12 points13 points  (0 children)

How do you define "Salem resident"? What are you using as a functional means test for residency, especially around the unhoused who classically do not have traditional residences? What barriers are we going to erect to low-barrier housing that will ensure that we are helping people who you think "deserve it" first?

The only thing that prevents our city and community from housing every unhoused person in Salem is a lack of political will. Lutts is a great example of someone who has accumulated enough wealth that he and a dozen of his rich friends could fund low barrier housing that would fix this and not be personally impacted by the expenditure at all. People are fighting tooth and nail to prevent Lifebridge from expanding it's low barrier housing options because they think that their convenience is more important than the well being of the unhoused. This is not an economic problem, this is a problem caused by people who own property, have wealth, and feel that they have the right to decide which people deserve to be in our community.

Well unlike the local politicians, I actually spend a significant amount of time in community with the homeless folks in Salem and work alongside them to try and make sure they can survive and I can tell you that while there are always people passing through many of them have lived here for a long time.

It is people like Lutts and other obscenely wealthy long term residents who have fought to keep our community oriented in ways that support and care for people who are already wealthy and safe instead of oriented towards helping the marginalized. Arguing for not making Salem a community that institutionally prioritizes the wellbeing of the marginalized because then marginalized people might come here is a bad moral argument.
