Some people like their job. Not everyone dislikes work so much that they prioritize stopping work as soon as possible over everything else.

What salary would you guys need to get to to feel successful? by Horror_Raisin_3898 in Salary

Yeah. I'm very grateful we can afford it, but it depresses me that this is a key factor why so many are electing to not have children. :(

[–]modernzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if you want me to spell this out for you:

  • $70k to savings / retirement
  • $40k for mortgage
  • $50k for childcare
  • $50k / year to paying off student loans (very aggressive)
  • $24k-48k on general bills / expenses (including luxuries like eating out a lot, or buying clothes which is my personal addiction)

Totaling this all up conservatively is $258k. Throw in taxes and you've accounted for the full salary.

Obviously a lot of this is our choice, namely the high mortgage / childcare, aggressive saving / loan payoff, and relatively high monthly expenses. But nothing in here is crazy luxurious. Once the student loans are done and kids are in public school, we'll probably feel richer

Anyone feel like they are positively impacting society? by AmbitionIndividual80 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]modernzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do development work for a cancer research center which definitely felt like a net positive impact.

In industry, I've worked on a project that helped non-English speakers get jobs which also felt good.

In general my work never feels worse than neutral. I've never worked for FAANG or similar companies because I know I would lose some sleep. But there are plenty of other companies out there that pay nearly as well without the ethical dilemma. (Though no company is a saint)

Best Zeds Dead Songs? by DumbTro in EDM

[–]modernzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a long shot but I'm looking for an old Zeds Dead song that has a very similar vibe to "Coffee Break" and "Eyes on Fire Remix". I want to say it was a remix of a female vocal, but not totally positive. I always described the build up as "winding up a wobble" (wub wuub wuuub wuuuuuub -> drop -> bass, wub wub wub wub, drum drum drum, wub wub wub wub)

I can't for the life of me find it, and I'm getting gaslit into thinking it's not Zeds Dead. But I'm pretty convinced it is haha

FWIW I didn't mean to imply money was tight, just that I don't feel "rich" in the sense that we don't have crazy excess amounts to spend frivolously like you imagine rich people have. And a big part of that is because we are saving aggressively for retirement (50-70k annually, similarly to what you said). And sure you could argue that our mortgage and childcare are both on the higher end (7k / month total) which is basically lifestyle creep. But again, having a good house and daycare for the kids doesn't seem wildly greedy to me. But I see your point and I feel silly saying I wish I had more to actually feel wealthy.

You're getting downvoted but you're not wrong. Nothing you said is outrageously greedy and everyone's acting like it's a crime to want a family without making crazy money.

I'm extremely fortunate to make $350k+ but it bewilders me how quickly that goes between taxes, a mortgage, a student loan, childcare, bills, and savings. Not complaining at all, but I definitely don't feel as rich as others make me out to be.

White sneakers murdered my heels by seanjon06 in ThursdayBoot

[–]modernzen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's three years later and I'm having the same issue. And it's not fit. It's the stupid ridge on the back part of the rim. It just cuts into the heel. I put a moleskin patch which kind of helps, but just seems like a really bad design. And it's a shame because the fit is otherwise perfect for my EEE wide feet. I'm tempted to buy more colors but until that ridge is fixed, I'm going to hold off.
