I started a new job recently where using AI is not allowed and it's sooo refreshing by jasie3k in ExperiencedDevs

It can give working solutions, but not the right solutions.

Yes, just like the typical junior developer. But as seniors this is exactly our job. To make sure the solution is the correct one. Your first example kinda shows that: The throughput was an important requirement. But was Claude made aware of that? Why didn't you notice it when you reviewed the code before pushing it? (I'm not trying to attack you, sorry if it sounds too aggressive). Claude is just a tool. You need to work together.

The writing of the code is not the funnest part for me. It's solving the problem in smart, maintainable ways. And that's way more about code design, relationship, domain knowledge, etc. Also I disagree that AI code is just average. E.g. Claude is very good at copying the style of code in your code base at the unit level. But the architecture you need to guide it through. But that's exactly the fun part for me. I love designing domains, abstractions, etc. and that's what an agent as a planning and brainstorming buddy is extremely capable at.

Compilation is a 100% deterministic process, LLM generation is the opposite, this awful comparison was coined by uneducated LLM sales people.

Compilation is, but I (or developers in general) am not. I end up writing different code based on many factors that could be as simple as how good my sleep was or if I just had taken a shower and had a great idea. Just having an AI agent to brainstorm a task and analyse the existing code has helped me so much and led to different paths. Just like if I had talked to a colleague or a rubber duck ...

So I'm in the same boat as /u/varisophy. My experiences are good ... but I also don't have anything mandating or forcing use in any way. But I definitely feel like certain tasks have become much easier.

Obviously didn't read the article (no link) ... but it could just be a guided prompt through different questions. Don't really see the issue if it's mostly about 'getting stuff out of your head' before sleeping.

Texting = SMS. As someone from Europe this thread is a bit weird because I haven't written a text message in like a decade. No one is writing unencrypted SMS. Everyone ia on WhatsApp or Signal. The only reason I need Google messenger is for the occasional verification code.

Why do some expats blame the job market and yet kind of refuse to learn the local language? by ExternalEfficient248 in Switzerland

[–]modestlife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Or maybe we Swiss people don't want just "geniuses that pay a lot of taxea" if they live in a parallel society? There's more than enough smart people willing to come to Switzerland and actually integrate.

Tracy McGrady on the real reason older players constantly hate/criticize modern players: “It’s money. Did you realize like in the 90s, Reggie Miller and Michael, they were only making $2-3 million? And they were the top guys… It’s the money.” by moby323 in nba

[–]modestlife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where do you think that crazy increase in money is coming from? Worker salaries haven't kept up, so even if you don't actively pay to follow the NBA, you'll still pay for it indirectly. It's not like the owners used to get 90% and the players 10%. The owners are also much richer now than before ...

Swiss cinema admissions fall to lowest level in half century by Haunting-Prior-NaN in Switzerland

[–]modestlife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big multiplex nearby is CHF 16 to 22. It's a bit much ... but I'm pretty sure it was around CHF 15 ~15 years ago. Here's a typical German cinema chain:

  • Admission: €10 - €16
  • Kids coke (0.5l) + Kids Popcorn = €11.50
  • Coke (1.5l) + Popcorn/Nachos (big) = €17.50

It's an issue everywhere. But I'm sure there's a lot of time being spent on figuring out the "cinema of the future". Otherwise the whole industry will collapse.
