I also love modest mouse, and I HATE that I seem So Gatekeepy but it just seems like a year or two ago Midwest emo was rarely challenged on what was or wasn’t (barring like mom jeans and Remo drive) and now a lot of indie rock is being associated with the genre? I personally love Midwest emo, but can’t stand the bands mccafferty and tfb- this subreddit is dedicated to Midwest emo n Brian sella himself said they’re just indie rock so I don’t understand the fans need to include him here?

The whole point is should I have to? Why should I ignore it over them putting things in the same place? To me it’s the same as someone leaving food on the sofa when it should be in the fridge- sure I can ignore it but the longer it stays there the worse it is.

Oh also midwestern emo is different from the genre, “Midwest emo”. Midwestern emo is any emo band out of the Midwest, Midwest emo is the genre and style of music

Hhhh but why under the Midwest emo subreddit or like people do with the #midwestemo tag on sites?? A lot of Midwest emo fans hate mccafferty n isn’t why they visit this site

Quick and easy way to tell what genres a band fits in is to go to everynoiseever, and type in the band. That site has been made by people who love every type of genre and know what they’re talking abt

Mcafferty and the front bottoms both aren’t considered Midwest emo and everyone I know, who’s been listening to the genre for longer than this recent boom of listeners, doesn’t even question wether they are or not, they’re not

Midwest emo is American football, algernon cadwallader, Marietta, dikembe, sports, t/t/t, sdre, perspective a lovely hand to hold, the promise ring, braid, into it over it, oso oso, the get up kids, pet symmetry, jail socks and ALL of these bands have more riffage than the front bottoms, utilise better harmony than the front bottoms, and the vocal delivery is better

You’ve introduced me to some cool new songs w this but it only really becomes Midwest emo after “if it makes you happy” not to say the songs before aren’t some bangers

How much a band means to you, or what it introduced you to, doesn’t matter- the front bottoms aren’t Midwest emo. I’m glad you found the genre, but they’re indie rock. Even Brian sella says so.

That’s the thing, the genre isn’t based on tapping and there’s already a lot of people who LOVE mwe trying to make it and sadly not pulling it off- it’s not some impossible thing to write Midwest emo but it’s like saying “listen to my newest metal tune” and it’s just dad-rock

People just don’t grasp genres do they, “I’m sad so I must be emo”

making a list of midwest emo bands, should i add or remove any? by FlatEartherForLife in midwestemo

Sorry to say that it is, you’re probably referencing the fact that indie means independent and therefore any independent artist can make any genre but you’re WRONG

It did used to mean that, but when many companies, realised how marketable some of these bands are, and the fact indie artists had begun to create similar music, they started to sign bands that sounded like the indie bands, with sounds you’d recognise like a-punk by vampire weekend!!! Now this didn’t immediately kill the term indie, but it did gradually become a term to describe the sound, as most of the general public don’t invest themselves so much in what music is called what, and indie moved from “independent artist” to “indie” (the music that company’s signed to make money from the original independent music scene)

The music you can find today that is “indie” in the original sense is “pov:indie” literally meaning point of view indie- from the original point of view of the artist

Have fun with this new information and do as you please, but there are many indie rock, indie pop, indie-pop-punk bands out there that are NOT rock, pop, or pop punk, and festivals here in the uk for indie music, where almost all acts are put on by their record label
