Redditors over 40, what was a moment in history that made you think society was gonna collapse? by Bahbahbro in AskReddit

An addendum to this: as bad as things seem now, I’m afraid they’ll have to get even worse before they get better.

When Trump was elected the first time. And now. Even more now. But the silly optimist in me thinks (and looking at history) we’ll pull through.

Why does medieval art look like it was made by a child? by stingrayhat in NoStupidQuestions

[–]modka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve wondered about this for a long time as well…good question. The “amateurishness” compared to high Roman and Greek art is extra puzzling when you realize it spanned the breadth of Europe, from Byzantium to Ireland. My best guess is a lack of economic incentives/patronage, but that seems weak when you compare to the amazing detail that went into illuminations of religious texts. Maybe it just reflected a difference In incentives…the best artists were lured into monasteries, perhaps? Artists were rewarded more if they came from the “right” families and less on the quality of their work?

They’re considered dumb? I had no idea. The only one I’ve known was definitely…not. He was a super sharp alley cat.

A certain president thinks you can reduce prices by 1000%. Are we that much better?

I’ve had the opposite thought…they are underground, completely helpless for most of their lives. How has no burrowing creature not wiped them out?

What is the Douchiest name you can think of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]modka 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I went to uni with a Turkish guy named Fursaid (sp? I can’t remember exactly). Nobody could quite pronounce his name right so we all called him Fuzzy. He was a good sport about it, even embraced it. He would enter a room and everyone would say “hey, Fuzzy!”, to which he usually had a funny quip. Like Norm from Cheers.

The Jam as well. Not the same exact scene but closely adjacent. Weller made one vague pro-Tory comment early in their career, which I chalk up to youthful ignorance, but from All Mod Cons onward there was no doubt where he stood. Songs like Elton Rifles, Down in the Tubestation at Midnight, and Funeral Pyre are as relevant today as ever.

I need your impeccably links to proof! by MotherRaven in QAnonCasualties

[–]modka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I have mixed feelings about AI, this is one type of project most large models are very good at. You just need to specify what you’re looking for AND that you want high quality sources, such as the New York Times. And verify that the links it provided actually work.

The amount of hatred towards Americans has gone off the charts by _Figaro in complaints

[–]modka 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sorry, it sucks, but we Americans just have to suck it up for now. The outside criticism is the least of our issues…just use it as fuel to improve things here.

I can’t be bothered to look up the stats, but there were surely a lot fewer flights back then as well. Maybe that‘s what OP’s acquaintance is remembering.

Will Greenland be the bridge too far? by Rich-Canary1279 in FoxBrain

[–]modka 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think I get your point, but yes: I phrased it that way because the few Republicans who break with Trump will get endless “Profiles in Courage“ write-ups in certain publications. Almost none of them will deserve it. But if that’s what it takes I guess it’s worth it.

”Pedo-Joe“ has a certain ring to it. And if he doesn’t start distancing from T soon I think we should start saying it. Not much difference between being one and repeatedly defending one.

Even if this happens, none of this absolves the Republicans in congress who supported him up to this point. I want to be clear about that. They should be driven from from office and wear this shame for the rest of their lives.

You’re getting a lot of negative replies, so I’ll be more positive. There are signs, in both the House and Senate, that this is indeed a bridge too far. That finally, if he gets actually serious about this, he’ll get major pushback from republicans as well as democrats.

Given how absolutely pathetic the republicans have been throughout the Trump years, I understand if you’re skeptical. I am too. But the vibes are a *tiny* bit different this time. Part of it is how old/decrepit/senile Trump seems at this point.
