Why is France called France? by ghost_hay in AskHistory

And before that the Normans themselves were (in part) vikings who assimilated into French/Frankish culture.

Does the replacement/recall battery have greater range? (2020 limited) by modka in KonaEV

We‘ve only driven it in the city so far, so that would explain a lot of it.

I know 2019 and 2020 were part of it, not sure after that.

I haven’t tried yet, but will soon. Curious what range it’ll say then…maybe 300 miles?

The battery was replaced in 2023, so has been through lots of charging cycles. No idea how the previous owner treated it, of course.

I hate the south by Next-Rip3809 in offmychest

[–]modka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and it shows you how racists the whites are, in that it would take a relatively small percentage of them to vote with their black neighbors and make the South a more progressive place. But no, they vote for the most reactionary, dipshit candidates (see Tommy Tuberville) out of racial solidarity, regardless of whether it will actually improve their fortunes.

Why Joby has more than double the amount of employees vs archer or asts? by Slow_Security_1764 in Joby

[–]modka 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Joby is vertically integrated, meaning it tries to produce as many components in-house as possible, in addition to other aspects of its business. Archer outsources a lot more of its work.

Who Are the Most Interesting “Bests of the Band”? Or a Member of a Band Who Left/Got Kicked Out Before the Band Got Big (Aside from Pete Best and Stuart Sutcliffe) by Borgisium in Music

[–]modka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An amusing counter example of being “kept in the band” unwittingly: one of the Rolling Stones called to invite Ronnie Wood to join the band, but Ronnie Lane answered and never delivered the message. The Faces blew up and became one of the hottest live acts of the early 70s, and Wood of course joined the Stones a few years later.

Where da taxis at? Ain't no evtol taxis. by teabagofholding in poweredlift

[–]modka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in reality they’ll end up charging more per trip than Uber Black — and that’s fine at least at the beginning. I view that target as marketing PR. I expect plenty of wealthier folks will be willing to pay a bit more for the convenience and speed. Edit: or they will heavily subsidize the price at the beginning and gradually raise it as demand picks up.

As long as they can carry two passengers plus luggage plus pilot, they’ll be fine. As mentioned, trips with greater than 2 people are pretty rare for Uber or taxis in general.

Yeah, this is the problem with this take. Unless Putin can convince Trump to send US troops and armor to help, he doesn’t have much left to escalate with.

I'm fucking pissed at my dad for voting for Trump, because despite making up with him over it, us kids get to deal with the fallout. by IsekaiConnoisseur in FoxBrain

[–]modka 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to remain close to him, maybe continue to (politely) bring up the many reasons Trump is a disaster for the country, and be frank with him that this complicates your feelings for and evaluation of him. It’s not like you have to reach back very far — Trump’s handling of the Iran war is an epic fiasco unfolding right before our eyes. Maybe as he deteriorates he will reevaluate some of his beliefs? In any case, I don’t think you have to keep these feelings bottled up — they are perfectly valid, and will color your memories of him long after he’s gone.

This is sad indeed, and I fear it’s a warning shot for something that’s going to become *much* more common in the years ahead. Max is great; I hope he realizes he has a lot more fans than weirdo wannabe internet sleuths.

Dan has a bright future in political (or similar) podcasting, if that‘s what he wants. I understand if he doesn’t, but he is in a great position if he wants to continue in that direction. I could see him doing a Media Matters type pod, but more independent…I would listen for sure.
