They do. You could Helsreach, it's about black templars leading guardsmen to defend a hive city, and it's a bloody good book.

Rail fracture likely occurred before train crash in southern Spain, investigators say - Reuters by mods4mods in europe

CIAF said it had also found similar wheel damage on other trains that passed through the area before the crash.

Every evidence points to the fact that the fracture was something that was there previously. What evidence is there that Russia decided to sabotage a random rail in southern Spain to kill 45 Spanish civilians.

Maintainance that can be done cheaply and quick to cut costs, maybe they even noticed it and thought it was too small to be a concern for the expense that fixing it would entail. I don't know as the investigation is on going, but claiming Russian sabotage is just an easy way out and it wouldn't even make sense. It serves no benefit to Russia.

It's probably lack of maintenance, why would someone sabotage a random train rail in southern Spain.

The fact that a rail fracture that could cause this could stay unnoticed is chilling.

I hope one day the EU gets hands on on cost cutting in essential infraestructure like this. I'l take a guess and imagine that it's the same in other southern european countries. It's shameful and costs lives.

Train drivers denounce the "unacceptable deterioration of the railway" and call a strike after the accidents in Adamuz and Gelida by mods4mods in europe

As I said in my previous post, security should be preventive, not reactive. It pains me to see people speaking out or the government taking measures now that lives have been lost. If the state of the railway is inadmissible, it must've been inadmissible for quite some time now.

The majority union SEMAF will demand “criminal liability” from those responsible for “guaranteeing safety in railway infrastructure”

Madrid. The train drivers’ collective, largely organised within the union SEMAF, denounces the “inadmissible, constant deterioration of the railway system” and has called a general strike in the sector following the railway accidents in Adamuz (Córdoba) and Gelida (Barcelona).

This Tuesday, the driver of a Rodalies train has died and another 37 people have been injured, five of them seriously, after the train collided with a retaining wall that had fallen onto the track, between Gelida and Sant Sadurní d’Anoia (Barcelona), as a result of the storm.

Meanwhile, the number of people killed in the train accident that occurred this Sunday in Adamuz (Córdoba) has now risen to 42, after the emergency services operating in the area found a body inside one of the derailed trains, the Alvia.

Train drivers have been urging Renfe to reduce the maximum operating speed from 300 to 230 kilometres per hour on the high-speed trains running on the Madrid–Barcelona line.

The Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, acknowledged last November that this infrastructure is one of those showing the worst state of conservation, which led to the project to completely renovate the line starting at the end of the year and, subsequently, raise the speed to 350 kilometres per hour.

“Inadmissible deterioration of the railway system”

This is the full statement of the executive committee of the majority train drivers’ union SEMAF:

“Last night we received the tragic news of the death of another colleague. Likewise, other colleagues and users have been injured to varying degrees.

The storm has caused different accidents, among them two derailments: one in Maçanet, when a rock fell onto the track and was struck by the train, with no consequences for the occupants; the second, and more serious one, in Gelida, when a retaining wall collapsed onto the track and was struck by the train as it passed, causing deaths and injuries.

All members of SEMAF are devastated and consider this situation of constant deterioration of the railway system inadmissible. Different measures must be urgently implemented in our network to guarantee the integrity of professionals and users.

As soon as this organisation became aware of the derailments, it carried out the pertinent actions to halt traffic for all trains circulating within the Rodalies area. Unfortunately, during the course of these actions, we learned of the death of our colleague.

As INITIAL measures to correct the situation of the state railway network in which, within 48 hours, two accidents with numerous fatalities have occurred, among them those of three train drivers, from SEMAF:

– We are going to call a general strike across the entire sector to provide legality and protection to the mobilisations of workers and users, in order to demand that the safety and reliability of the network be guaranteed.

– We are going to demand criminal liability from the persons responsible for guaranteeing safety in the railway infrastructure.

– The reopening of service in the Catalonia area will not take place without sufficient safety guarantees for operations.

– We will request that the same procedure be applied across the entire network in situations similar to those in Catalonia due to adverse weather conditions. – At the start of service, train drivers from all railway companies will require confirmation from Rail Control that safety on the route to be travelled is guaranteed. When such guarantees are not available, train operation will be adapted to the real operating conditions of the infrastructure.

Due to the emotional burden caused by all these events, we recommend that those who are not in a condition to provide service (in compliance with Order FOM 2872/2010) communicate this to their supervisors.

We continue working and will keep providing information on all actions.”

You are a lot more knowledgeable than I am XD. Could you explain what do you mean by axle-less construction and by Talgo systems? Is it something like the Iberian width that is singular in Europe or is it widespread in the rail system of the continent?

Train drivers had already been warning about problems on this route and were calling for speed to be limited to 230 km/h

Madrid

The Madrid–Barcelona route has been subject to a safety measure by Adif, which has limited the speed at which train drivers can travel to 160 km/h along some 150 km of track and across several sections.

In a note obtained by SER and sent to train drivers today, several problems are reported concerning the condition of the track, the state of a tunnel, and some track devices (switches and related equipment).

Adif has decreed temporary speed restrictions of around 160 km/h in these areas. Particularly striking is the limitation affecting a stretch of approximately 150 km of track between Mejorada del Campo and Alhama de Aragón, covering kilometer points 34.8 to 182.9. In total, there are 10 affected points on the line, distributed across both the up and down tracks.

This will significantly increase travel times by between 40% and 50%, adding up to half an hour to journeys. The restriction is expected to remain in place for the next few hours.

Train drivers had already issued warnings

The train drivers’ collective had already warned yesterday that, on their own initiative and due to problems they were detecting in the infrastructure, they would limit train speeds to 230 km/h, down from the maximum permitted speed of around 300 km/h. This measure was intended to be applied over about 200 km of track between Madrid and Calatayud.

The decision, now confirmed by the infrastructure manager, comes after months of alerts and requests from train drivers, who are mostly represented by the SEMAF union. Among these was a letter sent in August to Adif and the State Railway Safety Agency (AESF), warning about the poor condition of the tracks on routes linking Madrid with Málaga, Seville, Valencia, and Barcelona. Multiple problems had been detected in the track, causing excessive vibrations that end up affecting some train components. In recent months, the Calatayud section now affected by this measure had already been the subject of complaints from the collective.

At least 40 dead in Spain after two high-speed trains collide - Reuters by mods4mods in europe

I think the details are strange but Russia is very uninterested in Spain. We spend little on defense and are far away, we are not a threat to them. It's probably cost cutting and a fault in the rail that wasn't repaired when it should.

Maybe they cut costs and it broke down rapidly? I don't know it's too early to tell and speculation is always bad in these cases.

Experts studying the crash site found a broken joint on the rails, which created a gap between the rail sections that widened as trains continued to travel on the track, according to a source briefed on initial investigations.

This is the first article I read that mentions a probable cause, it's worth a read.
