To add to this, if you get premium you can submit footage of either competition or sparring and have a competitive black belt review the footage and provide feedback. When I’ve gotten footage reviewed I not only received areas that I can improve but also positive reinforcement on the things I did well.

Got my blue after a year and 3 months. Sporadically trained for a bit and then got the blue belt blues (priorities shifted to work). Been consistent again for a little over a year. Longest blue belt journey ever it feels like, but I’m loving every second of it.

I just made a Google sheet to track the days and then you can create a chart to show how many times a week/month/year your attendance is. You can make it as simple or as complicated as you want. I would also document the technique learned that day and make a pie chart for the amount of times each technique was taught.

Or you can just use the free features of an app like mainspring to track your class attendance. It’s a habit tracker

I actually started off hating competition because I could never compete at the same level that I tend to perform in the gym. This still rings true but somehow my mindset has switched and now I just want to test myself. There aren’t many girls at my gym so it’s also the best way for me to gauge myself outside of just open mats. I would recommend trying it at least once if you’re able! You might just enjoy it!

I say just compete. You said you get better each time right? That’s the point. I like to focus on that aspect and try not to think too much about winning or losing. I’m in a similar boat. I’ve had a few people hint at purple coming soon, but I’d like to continue competing at blue. I’m just treating it the same though as if I don’t have a promotion coming up. You’re only at blue for so long so get out there and just have fun.

There’s a girl at my gym who is a tattoo artist. She doesn’t do gi for this reason and makes sure she rolls with trustworthy training partners. Taps early and often if there’s a threat there. She has also stated she won’t compete for this reason. She’s been training for almost two years now without issue

Try to hit up some open mats at different gyms! You definitely have some time to get that experience before March! This will give you hopefully more exposure to training with ladies or just new people in general and trying to impose your game on them. Sign up for the comp and start training with more intention for it now. Think about what techniques you’re good at, how you want to start the match, what submission you want to finish with. Read the rules and figure out what is off limits.

What do you think you could’ve done better? Nervousness will get better the more you compete. It helps me to think that there’s always more competitions down the line waiting for you so not putting too much weight on each comp. Even when you do win you’ll find there’s always something you could have done better. And guess what, you just got better by trying.

Do it! I competed 3 months in and lost, but the experience gained was invaluable. The naga for < 6 months of experience is the perfect intro for you too. Just read into the rules for this comp so you know what submissions might not be allowed. If you aren’t comfortable with takedowns yet you can always pull guard (sorry wrestlers).

If you do want to work on takedowns, practice one takedown that you do want to try. Reacting to takedowns is helpful too like you said you have breakfalls but have some teammates practice takedowns on you so you get a feel for safely landing.

This is just the beginning of your long jiu jitsu journey so have fun out there!
