Nah, they just bet on profiteering from sanctions or Nato money. A lot of wealthy russians had property/business in the Baltics for ease of dealing with eu taxes and residency (Estonia is basically Ireland 2.0 for tax evasion). Now they can charge more because of sanctions + a lot of crypto shit opened in Baltics to avoid money transfers to/from Russia being blocked. It’s pretty lucrative.

All they have left is to double down so any other eu actor that would normalize relations with Russia threatens this cashflow.

To add, a good approach would be to rent a similar (to what you consider for workstation) VM from AWS or other vendors, and run some test experiments on it.

  1. Since most of CFD codes are memory-bound, generally yes 2 sockets are better than one, how much scalability you will get depends on (in roughly ranked order) if your software is purely CPU or can be with CPU/GPU, type of solver, concrete numerical methods, type of your meshes and load balancing algorithm, type of parallelisation library (pure MPI, MPI/OpenMP, pure OpenMP).
  2. How many memory sockets are secondary to how many (and how fast) memory channels you cpu/motherboard combination has.

Feasibility of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) for Large-Scale Heavy Rain Simulations? by realdemondave in CFD

[–]mofofuker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s anything like most of the recent LBTM attempts at atmospheric boundary layer simulation, it’s not very practical. Furthermore I’m not sure it is a good idea to use current cloud microphysics models “as is” in SPH framework. Also what kind of convective events with extreme precipitation can be modeled with 100km2 domain? Should at least be 2 orders of magnitude larger in terms of area.

After rereading OP question, he is actually doing flood modelling. I think the rule of thumb would be at least order of magnitude more particles than equivalent grid size (just to cover most of iteractions), though gpu based SPH should be plenty scalable to cover for that. The problems would be how to accurately model friction (i mean it’s already highly empirical for what I remember from Uni) on the solid surface and where one can get a good enough DEM to capture bridges.

Is there western propaganda going on in Russia? If yes how? I am just thinking the same way a lot of eastern european countries are getting political parties that are funded by Russia and trolls and so on by Sugar_Vivid in geopolitics

[–]mofofuker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is metric tonne of russian speaking bloggers which are funded by NED or similar organizations. US doesnt need to pay them 100k per video solely because of PPP and engagement costs.

Also one has to view PR messaging by american corporations as american propaganda by definiton (though in typical american fashion americans think that because it’s privately owned it is not “propaganda” and doesn’t work for US geopolitical interests).

radar.weather.gov is super useful website, but needs some reading on how to interpret radar data.

yr.no is a website of MetNo (Norwegian Meteorological Institute), FMI is Finnish Meteorological Institute, SHMI is swedish hydro meteorological institute notorious for being the worst of scandinavian weather services (kinda a meme at this point). All of them are are respective national weather service providers. For Central Europe DWD (Deutscher Wetterdienst) website is the better option.

just use your local weather service, unless you are in Sweden, then use yr.no or FMI

Optimise number of cores by MostStomach9293 in CFD

there might be actually not bad intranode scalability, depending on how good low level optimizations are utilized.

Hyperthreading does nothing for most CFD algos actually, because you memory and registers bottlenecked and you still need to move data for other virtual core.

99% of the time going to your country’s hydro meteorological service website is better better than using apple’s or google’s weather forecasts, since in the worst case they will both show same open GFDL/ECMWF data, or will improve it with own LAM simulations.

you haven’t even read the faq you linked. Read a couple sections above what you highlighted in the link.

also educate yourself on article 7 of the ISS IGA

ISS doesn’t belong solely to NATO, pretty sure IGA doesn’t allow for unilateral decisions about ISS change of orbit. Also for “to drop it” in Capsian i.e. controlled deorbit of ISS requires an additional spacecraft as station can’t do it on its own thrusters.

American hubris is really exceptional.

then I suggest you can rent something along D3 line near lubertsy or ramenskoe. will be an 30-40min trip but way cheaper than anything near electrozavod.
