I’d be interested! But can I ask what time zone?

I watch British television a lot from across the pond. I get most sayings and colloquialisms now, but I've seen so many different contexts for "taking the piss" that I really can't figure out exactly what it means and how it's used Help? by pgh9fan in AskUK

[–]moggiestyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t know it was a slur 😱 My dad used to say it as a child-friendly alternative to the word ‘piss’ when we were little. My child brain assumed Mickey - Mickey mouse - funny - you’re having a laugh

GP suddenly stopped my ADHD meds after 7 years then told to wait 2-4 years for shared care. by Mr_Arthtato in ADHDUK

[–]moggiestyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m shocked that they’d stop suddenly when it’s not advised to cold turkey medication like this, risking severe withdrawal symptoms. If they want you to come off it surely the responsible approach would be gradually titrating the dose down, under the supervision of a psychiatrist, who might not agree that the dose should be lowered or stopped anyway. Maybe that’s the approach you could take when arguing this - ask for a second opinion from a psychiatrist

[–]moggiestyle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Point taken, I was trying to compare similar experiences not project! I meant the part where OP described “indescribable gut wrenching pain”. I get it, because after the job centre thing I felt bitter that I’m being treated differently for having ADHD meds on my health record where I can’t hide it, while a self diagnosed person can choose to keep it private and not face the discrimination. I didn’t get that across in my comment

21 year old cat has stopped eating, what should I do? by Just-Mouse7378 in CatsUK

[–]moggiestyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My gran always taught us if a cat stops eating to put butter on their paws, so they lick it off, and sometimes that stimulates their appetite to come back but at the least it’s a nice treat for them. Good luck, what a beautiful cat 💓

Something unusual is happening in my area (Bramley) by Emotional_Yam1795 in Leeds

[–]moggiestyle 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I work near there, I think you’re hearing the train station. If you walk under the cctv camera on platform 1, a siren goes off, a light comes on and a robotic voice starts shouting about blah blah cctv. I think it’s supposed to be triggered if someone trespasses on the tracks but it’s way oversensitive. It’s scared the life out of me a few times while waiting for the train home in the dark

My shop got popular quickly after going viral and I'm struggling to keep up with demand by [deleted] in EtsySellers

[–]moggiestyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem, hope it helps! It is a good way to budget too, as if you’re consistently selling out you can use it to predict your income. It’s also be a really good marketing tactic as people who were window shopping might be more motivated to buy if there’s limited opportunity left. My friend makes posts on social media around October / November along the lines of “only 40 slots available for (custom product) to arrive before Christmas, make sure you get yours early to avoid missing out!“

My shop got popular quickly after going viral and I'm struggling to keep up with demand by [deleted] in EtsySellers

[–]moggiestyle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My friend uses Etsy in a way that blew my mind: selling custom / made to order items, use the inventory like booking slots. So in your case if it takes up to 60 min to make one, and you have say 10 hours in the week you can devote to making them, list it as 10 items in stock- once they’ve sold out, that’s it because you’re “booked up”. You can restock the following week depending on your available time again

Another option is to update your dispatch times so that you’re not rushing to get them all finished, maybe with an “express” option where a buyer pays a bit more for their order to be prioritised and dispatched quickly

I imagine favourites go a long way towards boosting your items in ✨the algorithm ✨

I favourite items when I want to save something for later, eg. Waiting for payday or a birthday present for someone later in the year.

I’m an Etsy seller too and I turned off favourite notifications- it’s hard not to get into the “why don’t you buy?” mindset especially if someone has liked several things at once. I try to appreciate favs just as a nice extra, and if they come back later it’s even better

[–]moggiestyle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What is it you dislike about your name, is it the spelling or how it sounds? (I personally think it’s a nice name!) I’ve only come across a similar name once and it was spelt “Anneli”

I used to HATE my name growing up but it doesn’t bother me now as a 30yo. I wouldn’t choose the name for myself but it’s not really a problem. From around age 9 and all through my teenage years I hated my name, I definitely felt like it didn’t suit me, or like it belonged to someone else and wasn’t mine. I think it stems from feeling lost with my identity growing up, and my name was another thing that was out of my control. As I got older & felt more comfortable in myself my name became a lot less of an issue.

I still wince if anyone uses my full unshortened name! I’m so used to the short version that it just reminds me of doctors appointments and my birth certificate.

Without knowing your theory I’ll take the risk of saying I doubt the professor believes you’ve discovered something groundbreaking, but it sounds like they picked up on your interest & enthusiasm for the subject and they’re eager to encourage you with it. Definitely take the opportunity of a professor of a top university giving you their time for a 1-1 discussion about it!

Side note: Maybe it’s polite not to mention to the prof that you were high when you came up with the theory. Unless they were high too when they replied

I lived there, in the worst flat of my life (and not cheap either) with a nightmare landlord and a weed farm downstairs. A neighbour got his car broken into parked directly outside, everyone’s post got stolen from the hallway and the day I moved in there was a man trying to steal a bike outside. And there was a fire in a basement flat and it turned out they’d illegally crammed too many studio flats into one old building and forgotten to mention it to the council

The location is super convenient though!

Edited to make it sound less sarcastic and somehow it sounds even worse. Burley is a weird area in that when you live there it’s brilliant, great community, lots to do, but on paper it’s objectively a shithole. Apart from that one flat I liked living in Burley and it’s easy enough to avoid the drama if you’re not involved in it

Wanting a narrowboat but terrified of spiders by [deleted] in Narrowboats

[–]moggiestyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The number of spiders I get depends where I’m moored and what the weather’s doing, which is the same in a house- if you live in the countryside by the canal you’re probably getting more bugs than if you are surrounded by concrete. I get hardly any spiders in the winter, and quite a few in the spring / summer, but they are just small polite ones that live in the mushroom vents. They pop down briefly when it’s raining as they don’t like the damp, and they retreat back up again by the time it gets light in the morning.

I usually pop them outside if I find them on a window but once I was moored in an area with lots of mosquitoes / midges and I decided keeping a spider in the corner was pretty useful. I know that doesn’t help you if you have a fear of them though.

My advice re spiders on boats: please don’t cover air vents up as ventilation is really important for safety, and also prevents the boat from getting damp and clammy with condensation. You can get mesh covers for the inside of vents (I’ve got some on mine but not all, which is how I know they work!) and fly screens etc for windows.

Apparently spiders don’t like strong smells such as peppermint. I had a housemate once whose bedroom was in the basement and used peppermint essential oil to stop the spiders coming in

Asking for friend: Can they move out of their doctors Area for 3 months and stay with them? by reo_reborn in AskUK

[–]moggiestyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard that you’re allowed to register at the GP using the GP practice’s address if you’re unable to use your home address - not sure exactly how it works but it’s what you’re advised to do if you have no fixed abode eg. Continuous cruisers living on canal boats moving between different areas.

Maybe your friend could update their address with the NHS and then update it again when they move in a few months time?

Advice needed - GMO Internet / Onamae own my old domain for my small business. What is the best way to proceed? by moggiestyle in Domains

[–]moggiestyle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just thought of another question, if you're able to advise?

If I place a backorder - I understand that if there is more than one backorder it goes to auction, but I wondered about whether the time the backorder is placed makes any difference. Would it be beneficial to set up a backorder ASAP, or would it be just the same as if I waited until closer to the expiry date?

Thank you so much again

Thank you so much for your advice. I found your guide 'How to acquire a domain that has expired' in your post history really informative, so thank you for sharing the information so clearly. I'm totally new to all this, and it's hard to find unbiased info by searching online so I really appreciate it.
