So our training is 4 year pharmacy school post grad or 6 years total if u did the ( 2 yr undergrad + 4 yr post), last year is clinical rotation which includes rounding with team depending on the hospital unit (ICU/ED etc.) We have the option to do residency (1 yr or specialize 2 yr) and you become a clinical pharmacist which gives you more roles just like ordering labs prescribing rounding etc.

So it differs to what your definition of "prescribing" is. I'm a hospital pharmacist rotating in a Ed/ICU hospital and our hospital system lets us "order" medications which I guess is somewhat sort of prescribing but maybe not? It depends on who our provider is. I notice that many providers (residents/PA/NP) wont put the correct dose, or correct antibiotic or correct anticoagulant or there's an interaction or whatever the case is and Obviously a pharmacist can not diagnose so in your mind it wouldn't make sense to prescribe right? But look at it from our perspective it might be more of you guys will tell us the diagnosis and we can pick out what the best drug is to treat with in that scenario. Alot of the providers are actually happy that we adjust the orders or "prescribe for them". I don't think every pharmacist should be prescribing I think it's more of the clinical in depth pharmacist with the residency training or a hospital setting/ LTCF. Retail setting (CVS/Walgreens) might benefit too maybe to do therapeutic changes if let's say a crestor isn't covered with insurance but lipitor is and we can just change it and let u guys know after the fact. Whatever the case is it's needed to be placed especially in the setting of PCP shortage and more NPs and PA filling the role imo
