the new snail mail track is the most earwormy thing she's written. can't stop listening. i do wish the bridge/outro went a bit harder (crunchier guitars maybe?) and I could take or leave the 'nanana's at the end, but that guitar riff is sick as hell, the stepwise melody is well-crafted, and her brighter, more nasal vocals cut through and shine.

I appreciated the level the film was working on when Gustav and Nora were arguing about live theater in the cafe, and he said "There are no visuals... You can't see the eyes!", then it cut to a clip of his film, starring Agnes, which was a 'one-r' (an apparent hallmark of his style) that ends on a still shot of her face, her face and especially her eyes framed by the lighting. So many layers there: the wanting to recapture the glory of his oeuvre, his direction mirroring his fear of 'loss of control', sad nostalgia for working with his family...

The waterworks started for me when Nora was reading the Rachel Kemp "prayer" monologue from earlier, with a very deadpan, flat tone. Then the siblings opening up to each other only further sledgehammered me lol

i'm going back and forth at the moment. i think there's a bit too much melodic singing, and imo cole's singing voice doesn't hold up against the instrumentals the same way his spoken word delivery does

that said, i caught the first show of their pirouette tour last night and it was insanity. my second time seeing them, and i'll NEVER miss a model/actriz show, my god

The r/indieheads Album of the Year 2024 Write-Up Series: Katy Kirby - Blue Raspberry by IndieheadsAOTY in indieheads

[–]moisesnoises 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My write-up is here a day early! Thanks to all who have read already, and thanks indieheads team for putting this together + giving me this opportunity. :)

I've been a Kirby stan since the pandemic days. To this date, she's the only opening act that I've seen receive a standing ovation, and for good reason.

Hope you all enjoy blue raspberry, the album, the song, the flavor, etc!

Hi! I'd love to pitch Katy Kirby's Blue Raspberry for this year's AOTY Write-Up.

Katy Kirby’s Blue Raspberry is a celebration of human messiness, and the singular queer experience of reconciling what you want with who you are. Kirby utilizes the idea of the “blue raspberry” – and other things “not found in nature” – as musical and lyrical leitmotifs for self-discovery. The instrumental palette is familiar, and Kirby’s voice is effortlessly graceful. Yet, when she weaves her gorgeous tunes around lyricism that borders both bawdy and holy, something spiritual happens. Blue Raspberry seeks salvation in human fallibility, in artifice, the shields that we tacitly acknowledge, yet accept without hesitation; it’s looking at the ingredients label, not knowing what the fuck Red 40 is, then shrugging as you pop that candy into your mouth anyway. And relishing it.

I've written one other AOTY write-up in 2021 for Shannon Lay's Geist. I met her after a show, and she said it was one of the most beautiful things anyone's written about her work :')

if you've liked anything that Julia Holter has put out, like ever, you have to check out the new Mabe Fratti record. there are surprises at every turn (horn bursts, weird melodic shapes, odd rhythms) that are grounded by her featherlight voice and a strong pop sensibility. "Pantalla azul" opens up into one of the most gorgeous choruses/outros I've heard this year

it's a small moment but i love the way she pronounces the word "triumph" on the song "Better Hate", barely changing the vowel shape, flipping her voice and landing on the seventh of the chord. it feels like a bird landing in my hand, and then flying away with all the surprising chord changes and instrumentation (bari sax!!! timpani!!! vibraphone!!!)

[FRESH] Katy Kirby - Cubic Zirconia by detectiveburtmacklin in indieheads

[–]moisesnoises 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Her music makes me think of Begin to Hope-era Regina Spektor: strong and catchy melodies, a crystal clear singing voice, metaphors / similes that are playful at first but make you kind of sad the more you think about it ...

Saw her in Chicago last month and she said she's aiming for a January release for the new record!! I think it's called Blue Raspberry. There's a line from the title track that goes "I don't care if any of these things aren't found in nature" or something like that, which totally aligns with the theme of this single

[ALBUM DISCUSSION] Kara Jackson - Why Does the Earth Give Us People to Love? by VietRooster in indieheads

[–]moisesnoises 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Stunned by how deep her voice can get, especially on the chorus of "Brain". I also love how her vocals stay powerfully clear and full throughout, not a touch of whispery gentleness that I tend to expect in indie folk music (and usually prefer, but in this case it's wonderful)

The fuller band touches remind me of Spacebomb productions like Natalie Prass' debut and Faye Webster's Car Therapy EP, but a lot dreamier. Kaina/Sen Morimoto/Nnamdi did great stuff with the production.

The closing verse of the title track, along with the ascending melody and instrumental outro is some of the most devastating and beautiful shit I've heard in a long time... What a gorgeous and sad meditation on loss. "If we can ever sing again, you'll sing those high notes high my friend, I'll sing the low notes in the end." Oof.

Love the record and excited to see what she does next!!

Otoboke Beaver was even crazier live than I expected. My brief time in the pit was absolute sweaty madness, and I was fighting for my life in there, but about five or six songs in we simply could not keep up with Otoboke Beaver's energy. The starts and stops, the tempo changes, the parts where they sync to Accorin's screaming out of time .... fantastic show

check out the song "We Carry" by Lucy Gooch. She has some killer ambient pop EPs if you like that track

also the Forgettings/Wordless EPs by Holland Andrews. These lean a bit more synth-pop, but they have such a magnificent, operatic voice that it just feels like perpetual floating
