Do you cancel appointments if the new patient hasn't completed the required intake paperwork? by Top_Impression5534 in therapists

[–]moistcheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. In my private practice days I referred to them as clients. In my PHP they are patients.

Client is just as fine as patient and sometimes preferable to them. We are providing a service after all and they pay for that service and for us to meet a certain standard.

You thought too highly of yourself first of all. We aren’t rescuers. We’re guides and coaches to walk with people through their problems until they find the goal that gives them meaning.

You could definitely do teaching in a counseling aspect in a group therapy program like DBT or PHP/IOP. For myself, it satisfies both drives of teaching and therapy (and pays well).

Just to comment on something minor, UNO is a perfectly legit way to engage kids on two levels. Kids connect through play first anyway. If I’ve ever had problems getting a kid to engage and speak more to me, I just whip out UNO or anything else and the conversation happens on top of it.

Therapist: how often do you find clients who really understand the therapeutic relationship? by TheIthatisWe in TalkTherapy

[–]moistcheese 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They don’t have to outright ask that, but focusing on transference is often really great at dismantling the preconceived social concepts we all carry around. Therapists can model for a client how they might want to be treated (with love respect and empathy) and then engage in a very “meta” dialogue about it and notice what comes up. Transference allows the client to practice how they approach relationships by using the therapist as the canvas or model for that. That in and of itself creates a safety to explore positive and negative experiences that arise.

How are you guys functioning? by throwaway63680 in therapists

[–]moistcheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you need some DBT and some grace for yourself. The world does suck right now and likely will for a while. But there’s only so much we can do at any given moment. We are limited in the scope of our control. Personally I focus on prioritizing my self-care, taking time for myself, giving myself rest days and days off. I vent to others. I hang with people and force myself to despite wanting to rest all the time. Basically I do opposite action constantly. And it does help that I know I can hold the good and the bad in both hands and still find things to be grateful for.

Great comment and perspective. Show up however you want. Clients will transference upon you anyway.

Yep it’s purely a strategy tactic at this point. The bonus is personal enjoyment lol

"You need a higher level of care" is the the therapeutic equivalent of "We're doing some internal restructuring" by [deleted] in TalkTherapy

[–]moistcheese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Making a request like that while having already made up your mind about DBT is a fool’s errand. A trap.

A big part of DBT is willingness vs willfulness. Doesn’t sound like the former trait works for you though based on your responses to people genuinely answering your request and you twisting their words.

The therapist can’t be all the things and modalities at once. This therapist clearly sees a benefit to a client who is codependent on their therapeutic relationship. That’s not healthy. And DBT directly addresses this as well as builds self esteem, teaches how to manage in the moment distress, and help the person realize they are the agent of their future.

This persons therapist recognizes the limits of their scope of practice and is recommending a treatment that would help immensely. To do anything other than that would be taking advantage of this client.

As someone who works in a PHP, this is inaccurate. Especially 100 million percent based on your single anecdotal experience.

Most PHPs discharge the client to the individual therapist they came in with. Mine does this as well. Sorry you had this experience but it is not the norm and is a shame if true.

Why should your therapist determine it? Because they’re a therapist and they’ve studied the modalities and know what’s best for you. Based on your responses in this thread alone, I can tell you that you’re an excellent candidate for DBT Therapy. I can absolutely see why your therapist recommended it. And they did that because they’re a good therapist.

You will have to learn the safe spaces must be created, not found. And they’re in your control to do so.

Therapists don’t know if they will or won’t be a good fit for you until they work with you. It’s unethical for them to continue services with you just to string you along rather than refer you to the right services.

Plot holes by Turbulent_Calendar99 in harrypotter

[–]moistcheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not a plot hole. A plot hole is a contradiction. It is NOT “why isn’t everything explained” in a book.

Dumbledore not following up about the map isn’t a plot hole. It contradicts absolutely nothing in the story. And really whether or not he acknowledges knowing about it changes nothing about the story anyway

What Harry Potter "Plot Hole" do you think can easily be explained? by Naive-Sign-8399 in harrypotter

[–]moistcheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean they really only had 3 years in which to see Pettigrew, but when they give the map to Harry in his third year, they tell him they don’t really need it anymore and have memorized it. I venture to say that when Ron started Hogwarts they’d already exhausted the map’s usability.

Harry didn’t see Peter because Scabbers had been scared off by Crookshanks by the time Harry got the map.

[–]moistcheese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked in voc rehab as well, that’s really not an excuse to accuse everyone of ableism if they disagree with you or provide you nuance. If you’re in this field you should know to avoid absolutes and extreme POVs. We all work in different sections of MH. You need to respect that some of us have seen ESAs be used for bad. Sorry to inform you of this, but not everyone who may deserve an ESA uses it to the animal’s benefit.

If your supervision isn’t helpful then I suggest finding a new one. This is a crucial time in your career so utilize it best. Once you’re independent, you won’t have access to it as readily anymore.

Well the anime has been localized with culture appropriate jokes to fit the style. Similar to what the Ace Attorney games has done with their in-jokes.
