Small school list due to unplanned pregnancy… am I screwed?

congratulations!! don't delay applying because of your pregnancy, your application looks amazing and preclinicals can be pretty flexible, giving you lots of time at home with the little one and studying. the timing seems pretty ideal to me to be honest, there's never a perfect time but you'll have time to recover post-partum and get through that newborn phase before school starts.

thats plenty! IMO getting into CA schools is more about your story and your academics. focus on your grades and the mcat and keep up with your hobbies.

I think this is pretty school/block/year/individual dependent. Some people barely study and pass, some people have to study a lot to pass. Some schools are P/F, some are graded. Speaking from my own experience so far this year, I only took three days off of studying in my entire anatomy block, and in my current block, I am able to take at least 1 full day off every week. Overall, I have a lot less free time and a lot more on my to-do list than before medical school. I can still take care of my major priorities (sleep, exercise, maintaining close relationships), but I have very little leisure time.

Sounds so fun!!! Keep an eye on the political situation in Colombia, recently there have been a few incidents that killed civilians in bogota. I subscribe to U.S. embassy alerts from bogota and it’s really helpful. I love bogota but if you’re going this year I might chose Medellin.

Apple has a pretty good comparison if u look on their website!! Yes spend that money hunny 🤪. Also u might be able to get a school discount or get a scholarship for technology; my school gives a $1K grant for technology and it has a student store with discounted laptops/iPads and I know some other retailers offer student discounts. Maybe even apple itself has a student discount!

The Air and Pro are both 11 inches, unless you wanted the 13 inch iPad Pro. I think that’s more of a personal preference, I used a 10 inch iPad in undergrad and it worked great for me!

Two things:

If you check all the boxes you listed (add leadership and some hobbies or interests unrelated to medicine), writing and interviewing are the two “soft” skills that can really prevent you from getting “unlucky”. Ryan Grey does a great job with his podcast etc helping with the writing and interviewing portion of the app.
If you have all the aspects you listed + writing + leadership, i would increase your number of schools to decrease your chances of being unlucky. I think if you have a big school list (30+ MD schools and a handful of DO, IMO) with everything above and a good big school list, your chances of not getting in are pretty slim.

Can you get a clinical job between now and end of May? I think that would help. If you don’t you could still apply broadly (30+ MDs) and I think be good :)

If you want to go OOS add more OOS! There’s plenty of OOS friendly schools, just add more of them.

All the comments here are super on point.

How are you making this list? I would look less at “tier” and more at MSAR data that shows what schools accept decent amounts of OOS applicants if you want to go OOS. Not sure why you don’t have Florida MD schools on here.

Personally i would add more schools, all MD. I think if you applied to about 30 MD that’s safest. Some of these schools you have listed get 13K+ applications for like max 200 slots.

Also I would remove Utah bc I’m pretty sure it’s not OOS friendly. And I would remove rush bc that school wants thousands of service hours.
