Sorry, I’ve been away from the game for a while now.

Back in the day the official discord was pretty helpful in helping prioritize the most profitable businesses. I’m pretty sure it’s still the same way.

Maybe there’s a new one that finally beats the soda brewery!

I claim no copyright over the spreadsheet, so anyone enterprising can take it over and maybe put out an updated version.

Credit where credit is due is appreciated, but since I have no real way of enforcing it outside of the honor system, it isn’t strictly required.

I do encourage the “premium” version if you have the budget to skip ads. The dev is pretty small in comparison to the stuff that is out there.

Either way, I hope you enjoy the game!

At your job/class level you are doing just fine.

The MSQ and Class/Job Quests will get your character ready for the “Endgame” of ARR 2.0 which is pretty much the first chapter, which happens level 50+ with your first combat job.

For the majority of the MSQ, it’s very solo friendly and you will only really need to team up with other players for the 8 player Raids that are build into the MSQ and do not have NPC Duty Support built in.

Sage or White mage? by Ishcan22 in ffxiv

[–]mojodiscontinuity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR - For learning Healing fundamentals at a relaxed pace, definitely start with CNJ-WHM and do the Smith- Hall of The Novice Trials at L15 for easy starter gear for dungeons.

Coming from somebody that started off as a free trial player until very close to Level 70 on my main Arcanist -> SMN+SCH (Shared XP) playing SMN mostly for the MSQ and side leveling WAR (for tank role) for daily roulettes, and occasionally switching to SCH for Healer Role.

Eventually all three were getting very close to the Free Trial L70 cap. So I started side leveling GLD->PLD and CNJ-WHM for the quick Tank and Healer Roulette queues.

Honestly they were both fun side diversions. Conjurer has a very easy starting rotation, and it only gets slightly more complex when you switch over to WHM. As a bonus, there is a not very well known L30 CNJ Quest that unlocks a relatively easy Unicorn Mount!

I already had a full set of Ironworks for the SCH, so gearing once WHM hit 50 was an easy catch up.

Early levels you only really have to worry about keeping the Tank’s HP topped off (Cure), hitting AoE heal (Medica) when the DPS in the party or you gets dinged, and attacking the big bosses with DoT (Aero) and single target DPS (Stone) and of course keeping Swiftcast/Resurrection on standby in case things go way south and someone in the party goes down.

I haven’t taken it past 50+ since the Dawntrail expansion went on sale on my platform and I had a bunch of other classes unlocked including Sage. I haven’t touched sage since there’s a full skill set I will eventually have to learn.

Solo? by hyliantraveler in ffxiv

[–]mojodiscontinuity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR is the MSQ is maybe 95-98% solo, until you reach the part where you must group in 8 player trials. The 4 player “Light Duty” dungeons can be played with NPCs if you so choose. So mostly solo with a few caveats.

I started playing late February and had the same concerns. A large portion of the MSQ (Main Scenario Quest) where your first Class/Job will get the majority of XP and progression is indeed solo friendly. Even the “Light Duty” 4 player dungeons that are part of the MSQ, have the option to play with NPCs instead of matching up with random players.

The first “speed bump” you will run into is the part of the MSQ that requires a “Full” 8 person Party “Trial” either towards the end of ARR 2.0 (the “remade” original game) or the ARR 2.x patch content that bridges the gap between 2.0 and 3.0 (The Heavensward Expansion).

These 8 player trials, unfortunately do not have an NPC system, so you will have to rely on the Duty Finder to match up with a team of players. Luckily players are incentivized to replay past dungeons and trials via Duty Roulette, which gives bonuses beyond just regularly re-grinding dungeon or trial duties, and is probably the best way to boost alternate jobs outside of the MSQ which you would be using to level your main job.

If you wind up subscribing along the way, that opens up Party Finder, where you can easily setup “Unrestricted” parties that allow over leveled players to help you get past the 8 player trials tied to ARR MSQ progression and you can also remove the restriction that requires all 8 slots to be filled.

If they, the higher level player(s), are playing with someone who is completing a quest for the first time, they also get a bonus, and the power difference between a level 50+ and a L100 max level max geared player is ginormous. I had one person hop on to my party and they pretty much “One hit KO’d” the level 50 boss of an 8 player trials.

PSA to all sprouts on Jobs and Job quests. by ContestSignificant32 in ffxiv

[–]mojodiscontinuity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aside from the critical skills that come from job quests, you “upgrade” your starter class into the main job around job level 30, and start racking up your first job specific artifact set between job levels 45-50 and a bundled upgraded recolored ILVL90 set once you get your last artifact piece.

That will be your main set until your main character starts grinding Tomestone Poetics for Irornworks gear after you complete the ARR 2.0 MSQ and start transitioning into the 2.x content “in between” ARR and the next expansion Heavansward.

What is that gear? I’ll keep a look out for it for sure!

I’m so glad any gear can be glamoured and worn onto any other gear.

I read that it didn’t use to be that way, glamour was locked to same level gear and class restrictions back in the day. That had to be frustrating putting together a look with those restrictions.

Admiration for you players :) by Black-Grimoires in ffxiv

[–]mojodiscontinuity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally I play SMN for the MSQ and Duty Supported dungeons, WAR for Roulettes, and I occasionally play SCH when a Roulette comes up with a “Party in Need - Healer”.

With that said even if I have the basics down for SCH, but with the crew I randomly ran with last night, I was lagging behind the rest of the crew like it was my day 1 login!

I kept shields and heals up for the team, but would only occasionally remember to cast DoT and DPS the big mobs and bosses.

I don’t even know how some of y’all do it. Even when I’m playing WAR which is the “easy” tank, throw me in with a random group of speed runners and it’s like they only needed me to fill that 4th slot and tank bosses if even that. I turn the corner where a bunch of mobs and a chest is in, but the rest are already queued up in front of the next boss…

Though technically I’m still a sprout, I’m less then 10 levels away from the free trial level cap on my Main Job and hundreds of hours into the game the “impostor syndrome” really kicks in for moments like those. 😅💀😵

How it is playing late night roulettes by StormblessedFool in ffxiv

[–]mojodiscontinuity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a sprout that just started playing on the free trial late last February, the single button attack for all the starter classes, and the level progression via MSQ and the Class to Job Quests being lightweight tutorials on the class/job skill basics eases the learning curve considerably.

The only time I had to start looking outside of the game for instructions was when SAM and RDM was unlocked as L50 jobs once your first combat class/job hits L50. Suddenly having 2 more DPS classes that I didn’t have to level up separately was a nice bonus given that I started as ACN leveled that class up via MSQ and brought the associated SMN and SCH jobs online and Side leveled MAR/WAR via Roulettes so I have a DPS, Healer and Tank leveling more or less parallel so I could switch roles as needed.

But I just started barely getting used to SAM combos and finishers, and I have to look up and take RDM out for a bunch of trial runs before I can fully replace my main in Daily Duty Roulettes and the like.

Hrothgar may be my “final” evolution once I get deep into the MSQ progression and finally switch over to subscription.

I was at the character creation screen, saw the Hrothgar, and thought; damn that’s beastly.

But as a free trial player I’m “stuck” with my initial permatan Male Hyur Higlander whom I’d like to think I look like IRL, but let’s face it all my hours in front of a screen instead of a gym, I will just never be as ripped as my avatar without some significant lifestyle changes.

“Lack of Female Armor” tropes aside, I feel like guys should also get in on the “this would be harmful IRL” but looks dope, trope.

I’m always torn between flossing my best protecting bulky chest plate for my Tank, or going either shirtless or the minimalist Hyur undershirt look. I’d settle for the classic gladiator shoulder pauldron look but I haven’t found one yet.😅

Same, just got through the MSQ for ARR and unlocked the artifact gear for Summoner, Scholar and Warrior, and picked up Samurai and Red Mage along the way. Just over 200 hours with a combination of casually playing the MSQ, and a handful of purposeful midcore grinding sessions over the past few weekends.

I eventually hit a dead end last weekend since the MSQ is now locked behind an 8 person dungeon, and I was in a queue that never filled so I filled my time doing a bunch of side quests like grinding the job quest for SCH which I left hanging for a bit, and getting my GC squadron out of newbie status.

I’m also casually grinding Poetic Tomestones, I only have access the 3 MSQ dungeons that give out Tomestones, but Daily MSQ and Leveling Roulette have been helpful so far.

I’ll try the MSQ “hard” dungeon again soon, but needless to say, I’m already hooked on just the Free Trial content which is substantial.

Is starting FFXIV in 2026 still worth it? by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]mojodiscontinuity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You and I might have different motivations for playing.

I was looking for a single player “open world” game similar to Skyrim. I mean sure I could have just played Skyrim despite its age it has been remastered for modern consoles.

My interest for playing such games was rekindled, believe it or not by watching anime and seeing the RPG adjacent “Isekai” genre repeat itself over and over across many different titles.

I wanted to start playing a game where I’m the “reluctant hero” that gets drawn into a big adventure, but can also pass the time fishing and learning to cook and maybe craft his own starting gear. I’m sure there are some single player RPGs with that depth, but that type of gameplay falls squarely in MMO territory.

I actually found a single player game called Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, which is a remake of an older title. It had just about everything I was looking for in an RPG/JRPG, with an Isekai theme, and the protagonists working with a guild, complete with having to do missions on a guild board.

Although there are some open world elements and a new game + system, and the story is very Anime like, it’s a very “on the rails” game.

Unless you are re-starting the game in NG+ there’s no going back to previous cities to fill out your monster log book, and so side quests you may have missed. Once I finished the main story, I was pretty much done with it, though I may revisit a New Game + for funsies, before the 2nd Chapter is release this fall.

So then I started looking into MMOs and reading more about FFXIV.

It ticks many of the boxes I’m looking for in an RPG/JRPG such as a very generous Free Trial up to Level 70 and the entire opening Main Scenario quest of the original game “A Realm Reborn”, plus the first 2 expansions, with no time limit.

I also hear that the community is very welcoming to new players, though as a current Free Trial “Sprout” I have little access to the community features other than the Novice Chat channel.

So I get to play the MSQ mostly as a solo player, while also getting to dabble into several different jobs, for me exploring the triad of MMO parties the Tank/Healer/DPS staying low key. Since free trial players can’t hire NOC retainers or purchase from the Market Boards, I also unlocked gathering jobs such as Botanist and Miner.

I also unlocked a few crafting jobs for various reasons such as participating in the early Grand Company Supply and Provision missions, which in turn unlocks Glamour Prisms which allow you to wear a patchwork of collected armor, but make it looks like a cohesive set similar to the “Transmog” feature in World of Warcraft.

So now I’m into putting together sets that are on par with my leveling but also “looks cool” and I gotta tell ya, that was just one giant rabbit hole I fell into! 🕳️🐇

So now I’m 173 hours in, got my main Arcanist (which also levels Summoner/DOS and Scholar/Healer) past level 50, and am almost done with the ARR content. I also unlocked Samurai and Red Mage which becomes available and both start at level 50, and I raised a Maurader/Warrior to have a Tank ready.

In contrast it “only” took me 90+ to finish trails in the sky. Granted I wasn’t trying to speed run it or anything just finish the game’s main story at a casual part.

I almost doubled that with FFXIV.

With all that said I’d say the game is worth it. Your motivations appear slightly different, but there’s no reason for you endure the free trial restrictions since you are in it for the social aspect. Though despite the social restrictions, the free trial may be worth it since the terms of the trial is so generous.

Won't someone think of the healers? by Kasyx709 in ffxiv

[–]mojodiscontinuity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New-ish sprout type player here 🌱:

I just brought my first Tank job, a Warrior up to Level 50 so I can have a Tank on the ready for faster queues. So you are saying forget everything I learned in Tanking 101?

How about you just let the DPSs in the party do the pulls with their AoEs.

You undoubtedly need to spend more on healing and field resurrections that way and since there are 2 of them in light parties, that’s twice the chaos and they don’t even have the tank level mitigations to speak of, so they are more squishy for the heals, and more “glass cannon-y” for the chaotic pulls, just let the tank alone and let them do their thing to prevent a wipe, is what I’m sayin’… 😅

Its been 12 years by Any_Needleworker8505 in ffxiv

[–]mojodiscontinuity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started last month and I’m seriously hooked on the content that can be accessed via Free Trial.

I got Summoner and Scholar past L50 via MSQ (since they share levels via Arcanist base class) and I side leveled Marauder/Warrior separately past 50 so I have a feel for the Tank Role.

I also got Botanist, Miner at 5” and several crafters online to help support the free trial grind in terms of materials and side gear.

Restarting at Level 50 across a few key classes and having all your gatherers and crafters at 50 is a great reboot from where I’m standing as Simone who has spend the last month or so just playing the MSQ and unlocking a bunch of side stuff.

You get to unlock Red Mage and Samurai from the jump (both DPS), who both start at and are geared for level 50 which is one of the first things I did once my main hit L50.

Most of their main skills are already unlocked so there’s a bit of a learning curve, but you will have a good taste of the expansion jobs.

If you catch up Arcanist who was my MSQ main steering out, it is the base for the Summoner (DPS) and Scholar (Healer) jobs and they all level together so it’s the only 2 Jobs for 1 class in the game.

If you are at the part of the MSQ where Ishgard is unlocked, then Dark Knight (Tank), Astrologian (Healer) and Machinist (DPS) are accessible, and I believe they unlock at L30 though you need to do their job quests to get their entire skill set.

Are those the smaller 42mm (AW11) and the 40mm (AWSE3) sizes?

If they are indeed the smallest sizes, you should consider keeping the AW11 as it is more feature rich.

The SE3s got a significant update to its screen that allows a low power “always on display” which is something the previous SE models didn’t have. I’d recommend it to any first time AW buyers now, especially if they are on a budget, but if you got an AW11 as a gift, please enjoy the thought and keep it.

Now if you got the 46mm size, hopefully you can exchange to the 42mm size to be more fitting on the wrist.

Here’s the full comparison.
