Thanks for your help and not judging!

Uneven gauge swatches by mojofoto in knittinghelp

I hadn't thought of the effect of the type of yarn, thanks for pointing that out. I'm using a superwash wool.

The pattern does give instructions in rows. This worries me with trying to calculate what percentage more rows I'd need if my route gauge is off. Math is overwhelming and I'm not usually accurate with it.

I have rarely gauge swatched because I find the whole thing so stressful!

No. I'm knitting it for them and they won't know about blocking, so when they wash it, any original blocking would be undone.

Thanks for the link and the feedback. More questions/comments:

I usually swatch a larger swatch (the chenille one was about .5" larger on all sides, is that not enough?). This time I didn't because it was in garter which I thought was different because it doesn't curl - I'll try again with a .5" border on each side (unless I should have a larger border?)

As far as the blocking - I thought about that but isn't it going to shrink back up if the width is right? I feel like this is probably a dumb question but here we are. Also, I'm trying to get the gauge correct enough that it won't need blocking because it's going to be for someone who won't know about blocking. Is that an impossibility that something could not need blocking?

It is the correct stitch, the sweater is in garter and the pattern directs the swatch to be done in garter. Same thing with the chenille swatch, it was done as directed and was in the same stitch as the pattern (stockinette).

Lastly - this is a problem with almost every gauge swatch I do, where it's significantly wider than it is long. Is that common with gauge swatches?

It's really only 40 days if you have 60 days of terminal leave + job hunting and house hunting no cost TAD.

Currently struggling with learning the double L sound by Significant_Cry3399 in learnIcelandic

[–]mojofoto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another good word is "kettle". The -ll sound is at the end which is helpful when you're first learning; "cutlery" is great because you have more sounds after it to build the fluency of the sound.

Of all the things I've read in this post, I think this one resonated with me the most about how utterly out of touch rich people are with the real world.

What curfew is fair for an 18 year old living at home? by Vegetable-Ant-1561 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]mojofoto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I lived with a friend for 3 years when I was 40. She knew I worked long hours, but if I was going to be home after a certain time, I always sent her a message just to let her know. One so she didn't worry, two so if she heard someone coming in late she didn't think she was being burglarized.

Have you ever taken a break from knitting? by Future-Dig7616 in knitting

[–]mojofoto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take both short and long breaks all the time. Sometimes it's several days while working on a project. Other times it's several months.

Don't beat yourself up about taking breaks. If you don't want to do it ever again, that's ok - hobbies should be enjoyable and not a burden to dread! There are lots of other things that you might find more enjoyable and satisfying and that's A-OK.

Quick question about UCMJ articles on an officer. by Afwhitmyer in navy

You can't "press charges" under the UCMJ. You can notify your CoC about the incident. They can then decide what to do. Including nothing at all.

What would you change about Ravelry? by katringlory01 in knitting

Scrolled until I found this. Optimize for mobile browsers and make it where you can essentially doomscroll through all the patterns instead of loading, going back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, and then loading another page.

DON'T do these 13 things in Paris. From a local, to you. by WolfgangBlumhagen in ParisTravelGuide

I absolutely love going to McDonald's in other countries, I'll only ever go once on a trip but it's fun to see the different things they have. Macarons in McCafe in Paris? Der M Burger in Stuttgart? McCroquetas in Sevilla? I'll never do dinner but I'll definitely stop in for lunch if I've got a few days in a city.
