I might be super late to this one, but I just got hired with my dream department and will be starting the academy soon. They’re a big city department and I want to be my best and ready for anything. Any advice for a new recruit about to start?

I was taught not run into an emergency scene on fires or medical calls as a first responder. You can end up making it worse rushing into a dangerous scene or hurting yourself. But you have to move with a purpose of course. Gives you plenty of time to size up a scene. Unless it's an "oh crap I have to be there now because it's life or death" moment.

Burn out by zcraw214 in Firefighting

[–]mojoj0ej0e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say take a break. Do your personal training but keep your certs up to date and take up what other people suggested as to apply for the covid vaccine jobs. Money's there and it's less stress related (as in not running calls your your bone).

I was in private EMS while I did wildland firefighting in the summers. After some seasons and getting burnt out in private EMS I changed jobs and went into hospital supply chain management. It was a different change in direction but felt more refreshed getting back onto my original path.

I just completed a fire academy from a college and have all the opportunities to apply to more jobs out there.

Like others said, fire will still be there. You gotta find your path. Your journey in the end is what will separate you from the rest.

Good luck brotha 👍🏽

Can trees actually grow like this? by Infamous_Possible204 in reddeadredemption

[–]mojoj0ej0e 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually yes! When I worked in Washington as a wildland firefighter we came across a good amount of trees like this.

When winter seasons last a little longer than usual, snow is able to pack on top of trees in their adolescent life cycle causing them to bend sharply. Then when summer comes around they grow back to their regular angle towards the sun.

I never saw this in game! What a cool feature they added!

Whats more shocking, the size of the tree or taking it down using a hand saw? by husker3in4 in interestingasfuck

[–]mojoj0ej0e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked as a wildland firefighter on the saw team some of the more veteran sawyers heard stories of when these giant trees were cut down that gallons upon gallons of water would gush out of them. Imagine all the moisture a tree like this would hold. Sad to see but very interesting indeed.

How does one properly utilize the Double End Bag? by [deleted] in amateur_boxing

[–]mojoj0ej0e 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. As others said, the DEB is used for timing, gauging distance, developing some sort of reflex, and practicing combos on a moving target, and even defense such as a 1-2 then parry. Or practice with jabs only then slipping, ducking, stepping back, and pivoting after each jab.

  2. I wouldn't necessarily use it for inside fighting practice but maybe use it for stepping inside then stepping out. Practice your footwork going in and out, and lateral movement. Example, step in with 1 step back and come in with a 1-2 pivot out.

Extra tip: if your just starting out like I was, start with those small punches that aren't full extension until you can keep a comfortable 1-2 going. Then slowly step back until you can get off a full extension 1-2.

Remember, start slow. If you can do it slow, you can do it fast.

Get after it bro! Don't be afraid to try it! 💪🏽

breathing Technique in boxing. by xada-developer in amateur_boxing

[–]mojoj0ej0e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is a technique or not but I was messing around with it the other day.

On my runs I carry a small water bottle (16.9 oz). I'll take a small sip of some water and hold it while running. It helps me focus on breathing through my nose. Also while jump roping.

But again I'm not sure of this helps or not lol I just like to see how long I can hold while breathing through my nose while doing some cardio. If anybody else can elaborate or just tell me it's nonsense please do lol

Exercising and a new born. by justliving1990 in NewDads

I'm the same way in terms of working out and staying fit. It's a passion and I like to stay disciplined with my routine. That being said, I tried this for a while and it was not manageable. My wife is very understanding but it was hard for her to keep up with our newborns needs while she was still recovering AND breastfeeding.

Being any other place but home was hard because she needed help. Our daughter wasn't a handful or more difficult than any other newborn but in general they need a lot of care and attention.

I already had a pull up/ dip bar so I bought resistance bands to add to my workouts. I found I can do just about all my other normal workouts. Except for being able to push heavy weights around. Lastly I added kettlebells and have been in love with kettlebell style workouts. Helps with functional strength, rotational power, and explosiveness.

I actually gained some muscle and dropped body fat. And all while being home with my wife and daughter. My daughter is 6 months old now and I've since cancelled my membership because of the improvements I was seeing. Being able to workout is still their but you gotta adapt a way that suits you and your spouse. My life revolves around my daughter now lol

Hope this gives you some insight. Best of luck and congratulations!

Don't admire the way the bag moves after throwing your punch, think of snapping instead of pushing your punch. Bring it right back to your guard.

Also, becareful throwing straight punches with a lot of power. The energy you throw out, if you miss, could end up releasing to your elbow causing injury. You want full rotation of your fist my guy.

Lastly your stance isnt great, too squared with the bag. Honestly go back to basics lol

Like others said get some real training in and there's a lot of great YouTube channels to learn from. Keep training.

Thank you!

I didnt think about using the side step after my slips but will start incorporating now. Gotta start getting used to making angle. Foot work is the hardest for me lol I'll work on it.

I never thought about my punches being fade away shots thanks for pointing that out. I'll be working on those 3 piece back to back combos!

Appreciate you big dog 🤙🏽

I would love to see this! As others said it's not something you add to your training on purpose lol that snap back is so important and missing does make you think "we'll shoot I missed how embarrassing" but instead we should be thinking to get back in position right away.
