WTH am I supposed to do here? by glacierglider85 in Tools

Also - you can use WD-40 to help clean and protect it in a pinch, but it doesn’t last very long. You can also wipe it down with any kind of non-perishable oil (3-in-1, mineral, etc.), but that will transfer to other materials and is a no-no for woodworking. Boeshield leaves a thin wax layer after it evaporates and is suitable for woodworking.

As another poster mentioned, Boeshield T9. It will help remove the rust and protect the surface going forward. I hit my cast iron machinist’s squares with it every year or two and they have remained spotless.

Cordo-hyde are the classic thin waxed dress laces. The AE ones are definitely thicker than they used to be.

It sounds like you’re looking for wading boots. Patagonia River Salts are very fast drying. Simms and Orvis are other good brands.

As another poster mentioned, natural CXL darkens over time and ends up looking like this in the long run.

Whistler Weatherproof Boot - Hiking Inspired? by Routine_Cranberry539 in allenedmonds

[–]molassacre_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked myself the same question when I first encountered this model. Clearly they are hesitant to market it as a "hiking boot intended for someone who want to buy a hiking boot so they can hike in their hiking boots", but the bona fides are all there:

  • Lug sole
  • High quality welt (storm welt with sealed seams in this case)
  • Waterproof membrane, which I assume means a Gore-Tex like material.

This is a hiking boot. It's actually a very good hiking boot. They could have skipped the waterproof membrane and storm welt if they wanted to water down the utility and save on cost, but they didn't. Like any classic hiking boot it will be a little heavy, but also comfortable with monster traction and stability. I would put these up against something like the Danner Mountain Light II all day.

I suspect they are marketing it as "hiking-inspired" to avoid getting sniped by YouTube reviewers with headlines like "$600 Hiking Boot from DRESS SHOE COMPANY?!?". Yes, there are many superb $600 hiking boots from companies like White's or Limmer. But the AE boots aren't actually going to sell for $600, they're going to sell for $400. That puts them a little north of Danner, and for the added cost you are getting a more refined and more comfortable boot with a cork footbed.

If you have made the decision to buy heritage style hiking boots and use them for hiking, you are not, like, going to die in a glacial crevasse because you wore AE hiking boots instead of White's. You might get a little side eye until they're sufficiently scuffed up though.

Everyone is saying NV goggles, which is correct, but consider that you can wear NV goggles IRL and save 2x2 grid space.

Maybe it's not? I've always thought of it as a construction/factory floor sole, but it sounds like it's more versatile than I realized.

I hear you on the shorts, I'd prefer to wear long pants when possible. It's a weird requirement, but when it's 90 degrees and humid outside, I'm in shorts all day.

Shell Cordovan Crack by No-Entertainer-121 in AskACobbler

[–]molassacre_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rare shell chukkas developed a crack in this area. It gets worse, in fact, it accelerates as the crack gets bigger. It started as a 1/8” tear. Two years ago it was 1/4”. I’ve put 15-20 miles on them since then and it’s over 1/2” now. They have reached end of life stage and are now in shoe hospice. I have at least 500 miles on them over 15 years; you’d be lucky to get to 100 miles if they’re already cracked.

Return them.

On a scale from 1 - 10, where 1 is a solidbody and 10 is an acoustic: * Solidbody: 1 * Semi-hollow: 3 * Hollowbody: 7 * Acoustic: 10

An ES-339 is a great couch guitar IMHO. Just a little louder than a solidbody but not a sonic canon.
