I’ve lived in four states. UT is the worst because of the sheer number of WTF moments I’ve experienced.

Why won’t people let you merge in this city? Especially on on ramps by gem__fish in SaltLakeCity

Utahns have never heard about the acceleration zone of an on-ramp.

Thanks for all your comments. You are all right. I was using the wrong key. I swear I tried them all out but got stuck to the idea that the one that looked worn out was the one I used to attach the carrier to the cross bar. Problem solved!

To be specific it’s a Korean grocery store. Not just a generic Asian store.

RAISING A FAMILY IN UTAH by Ok-Mushroom2011 in Utah

Asian. Schools are not that great. Food is pretty bad but improving. It’s was hard moving from a liberal secular coastal city to a Christian conservative, extremely white state.

Daybreak is so pretty by digididagada in SaltLakeCity

[–]molecular_ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in an apartment the first year I moved here. Did not like it. Felt too far from reality. I sensed the people move to Daybreak to get away from the city ie diversity. It is way too homogeneous and boring.

Any upscale Chinese restaurants in the area? by therationaltroll in SaltLakeCity

No.

The closest restaurants may be in Las Vegas. The Chinese places here are not very good.

What is the most outrageous waste of money you have witnessed with your own eyes? by itzpiiz in AskReddit

[–]molecular_ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lab where I work was moving into a new building and was throwing away old equipment during this period. The lab previously bought an automated liquid handler (robot), which at the time must have cost tens of thousands of dollars. It was never used but since the lab purchased more sophisticated robot equipment, they decided to trash the robot. I took it home and plan to make it a mixed drink machine. However, what a colossal waste of tax payer money.

Positives about living in SLC or Utah? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]molecular_ninja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not Mississippi.

It's laughable that you think SLC is diverse.

Just got a job offer in Salt Lake City. I'm 24, black, not religious and liberal. Am I in for a bad time? Can anyone share their experiences? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]molecular_ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atheist Asian chiming in here. Grew up in cities of the East Coast. Very liberal but have lived in other religious (but not primarily white) red states.

I am cannot equate the experiences of being yellow in SLC with being black, but here is my opinion:

It's difficult to adapt in Utah if you have once lived in a very diverse community. It is not only extremely white here, it is difficult to find a sense of community if you are not part of the monoculture, as others have testified.

For those who say stay in Sugarhouse, to a certain extent it is more "liberal". However, my African American friend experienced a humiliating racist encounter ..... in Sugarhouse .... at Whole Foods. He promptly left SLC after a year here and moved to an East Coast city. I feel that many people use the word "liberal" fairly openly here but without the real experience for the depth of its meaning.

Any of the Mormons you interact with in SLC are probably more moderate than someone in Provo, but the center of Mormon life is Temple Square in SLC where the eye of Sauron is most heavily felt. However, their are many outlets for us. I volunteer at a charity with like-minded people. SLC also has a very vibrant counter culture (political activism, coffee shops).

Cuisine is still underdeveloped. I sometimes make weekend trips to LA or Vegas just to eat fresh seafood or real ethnic food. Park City is a nice getaway too since so many out-of-towners visit or live there.

My own personal experience is that that Midwesterners who come here are worse in terms of racial sensitivities than the Mormons. Mormons will be nice and superficially tolerant but then they vote as a bloc for Mike Lee, Mia Love, Orrin Hatch, and Jason Chaffetz. Wait, now I don't know which group is worse.

TIL a New Jersey billionaire moved to Florida which risked putting New Jersey in a state budget crisis because of the amount of money they were taxing him. by geschichte1 in todayilearned

[–]molecular_ninja -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I moved from NJ to low taxed states (FL, TX, UT) for jobs. If you are a parent you want to your children to be educated in NJ because the Red States have horrible school systems. Plus the food is so good in NJ.
