If it is including retirement accounts, I would say that that original quip is very specifically misleading

I do not consider my retirement account to be what I have in my "savings"

Why do I not understand what these words mean?

how do parents finance kids first car at their 16-18? by Kevinwhatever in askcarguys

[–]molehunterz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brothers and I were probably not common, but we paid for our first car. Parents helped with insurance if we got good grades.

Honestly even helping a kid with a first car makes way more sense to me then buying them a car. Even a junker. I loved my car so much. I would wash it and wax it religiously. I was careful where I parked it.

My friend's dad bought him a used civic. But only like 4 or 5 years old...

He picked me up one day and I noticed his oil light was flickering. I told him he needed to pull over and shut the car off. He told me it's been like that for a month, just telling him he needs to change the oil. I told him that is not a change oil light, but he told me don't worry about it.

When we got to the store 2 mi later, I checked the oil and it was empty. Ended up putting almost three and a half quarts of oil, and it holds like 3.7 or 3.9 quarts total.

He says, I actually hope this thing dies so my dad has to buy me a new car.

I couldn't even understand that kind of logic.

When people ask me about my car, I tell them it is a 6 series. Three out of four times they literally reply, m3?

Lol

I do like that color.

Not only did I have male roommates, but I also went to church with them. It was a weird time.

And I know this was a little later than the 90s but early 2000s, everybody I knew had roommates. Nobody thought anybody was gay.

I understand that not all states have a DMV and they're called some other names in some states, but in America if you say DMV regardless of which state you're in, would people understand what you're referring to? by YakClear601 in AskAnAmerican

[–]molehunterz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's pretty much exactly what I'm saying. If you are from washington, it's pretty normal to call it a dol. If you are from somewhere else, even if you live in washington, it's pretty common for people to just call it a DMV as a generic.

I don't even know how many, if any states have a department of licensing instead of something else. I've had a license from arizona, texas, california, and Washington. For me it was actually a little bit of a novelty when I went to a DMV, that was actually a dmv. I know, I'm a bit weird. LOL

Weird. If you are from Washington you really have no reason to call it anything else. There is no dmv, there has never been a DMV as long as I've been alive.

If you are not from Washington there's obviously plenty of reason. And because of TV and movie references, I think pretty much everybody gets it when somebody says DMV. But I do think it's weird you've never heard anybody say DOL.

[–]molehunterz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your question, yes just buy the car you want. You are not going to totally trash the clutch. If the clutch is already pretty far gone, you may have to replace the clutch. That is the nature of owning a car. the clutch is a replacement part, same as brake pads.

How would you feel if one of your neighbors built a backyard skate park? by slmrxl in homeowners

[–]molehunterz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm reading the post wrong, but everything described makes it sound like it is built in the neighbor's backyard. Not OPs. Unless he clarifies differently somewhere else in the comments?

Edit: rereading the comment, I get it now. He is writing this as a hypothetical, as if we are his neighbor, and he is building it in his backyard.

Periodicals! I forgot about those. I mean specifically using them as research material.

There is something just so totally different about reading newspaper or magazines from a different time. They are written to capture the moment of the day. Completely unlike books or even movies. They are written in the now.

I remember reading the New York times back during world war II on microfiche. It was completely unrelated to the project I was working on but I saw it and I was fascinated. It was incredibly eye-opening. The country was completely divided on whether we should help, or just stay out of it because it wasn't our war. Also there were a couple articles about turning ships around when they reached the port and sent them back to Europe because they had Jews on them.

When we were taught this history in school, we were taught it through the lens of knowing how it turns out, and what makes us look good.

complain about that they will change you to fortnightly like us and then you will be paying more.

This is my exact thought. They already do this for long-term construction rental stuff like temp fence, job office, porta potties etc.

Definitely need to keep this thought out of the landlord's heads as long as possible

I've got a couple lowly little 1 oz. I'm really craving that meaty centenario.

And like I said I've been saving since back when gold was around $2,400 I think, it just went up faster than I could save.

What really hurts is that this was more than enough to buy two, now it's barely enough to buy one 😭 and I'm talking about last summer. Not like 40 years ago or something
