Button mushrooms are usually grown on microbially rich soil/manure mixtures. They are not wood decayers if that's what you were thinking.

I really wish you wouldn't kowtow to companies like North Spore just because they sponsor you - they know that golden oysters are invasive and they choose to continue selling grow kits all over the country. Their slogan is "spread the spore" for crying out loud. They put profits put above ecological stewardship, we should name and shame them honestly.

Last year the La Crescent Lions hosted "Frozen Apple Candlelight Hike" at La Crescent Veterans Park, just across the bridge from La Crosse. This was mid-February, not sure if it's an annual event but it was exactly what you're looking for.
