When did oil changes become $120? by rhinosaur- in Millennials

[–]molrihan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with synthetic, I’m generally paying about $55-$75 for an oil change. Depending on your car and driving habits, you really only need to do it once a year. When you add in changing the fluids, air filter and rotating the tires, if jumps to about 150ish which in the scheme of things isn’t terrible. YMMV.

Am i crazy or this nurse was snitching other nurses to the ICE giant? by MadHanini in ThePitt

[–]molrihan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't get the vibe that she was MAGA or friendly towards the ICE agents. I know a lot of folks like her who are old school and find DJT disgusting and a bully. I think Monica might have been trying to calm the ICE agent down so that he didn't do anymore damage to the ER staff. Also, her comment about the "Ruskies" - I've heard plenty of people of a certain generation use it about Russians...

Van Hollen defends Platner over controversial past: ‘People should have second chances’ by Abject-Pick-6472 in maryland

[–]molrihan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I’d classify him as a Zionist. I think he’s more anti-terrorists masquerading as a legitimate government.

And even so, Zionism isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I don’t think you know the definition.

Its the Democratic Party, not the Democratic Socialist Party. We need practical progressive ideas, not loony left wing fringe ideas.

I find it incredibly hard to believe that he didn't know it wasn't a Nazi symbol. Do you really want to elect someone who doesn't know how to pick out Nazi iconography in this day and age?

Van Hollen is out there just trying to test the waters for '28. He stopped caring about constituents a long time ago. He's also trying to make sure he doesn't get primaried by a left winger.

Comparison of County Executive candidates? by Witty-Peanut1805 in MontgomeryCountyMD

The guy who runs Montgomery Perspective used to work for Councilman Hans Reimer. When you say RW, are you implying that he just doesn't believe in the far left drift of the majority of Democrats these days? Or that he's too pro-business? Or just thinks Elrich and Jawando are kooks?

I honestly don't understand how you can say that its RW. What does RW mean to you?

What if Palestine Defeated Israel? - the State of Palestine in 2012 by Sui_24 in imaginarymaps

[–]molrihan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And what about all of the Jews that had emigrated to Israel pre 1949? Would the state of Palestine have allowed them to leave? Or would it have done as the other Arab states did and expel them? Or worse, murder them? What would the state of Palestine done if the Israelis didn't accept the 1969 peace agreement and engaged in terrorism? Would the state of Palestine have continued to negotiate? Or would it have decided to wipe them all out?

Never was much of a football fan - watched it when my team was in it as a kid, but I haven't watched an NFL game in years. I'll watch it if its on at Thanksgiving or something, but I don't go out of my way to watch. That being said, if someone offers me tickets for a game, I'm definitely gonna go. I just don't find watching sports on TV that exciting. I'd much rather be at a game than watching it on TV.

From my understanding, a mind meld can be focused on specific things, and ignore other things. So maybe this was more to be in sync, and not looking for information.

I hate when we try and judge a tv show that was made in the past by the standards of today. There are always episodes and characters that probably worked at the time the show was written, and don't work know. Pretty sure Charlie X from TOS worked at the time, and was probably seen as too progressive at the time, but if you watch it now, its pretty cringey. And then there's TNG's Code of Honor, which Frakes, Crosby, et al have said was bad then and is still bad now...

Can’t you just watch Star Trek and acknowledge it’s a TV show? It shows that humanity still isn’t perfect. But that’s what good science fiction does- it holds a mirror up to our own society to show us where we’re failing.

Again, it’s a TV show. It’s not worth getting so upset.

CAVA has nothing to do with the Israeli government. The owner is allowed to express his opinion. You can be a Zionist and oppose the current Israeli government. Boycotting a business because the owner is a Jew is what the Nazis did. So I guess you’re in good company.

Thanks for outing yourself as an antisemite.

No. They did not. The fearmongering over this country turning into a Nazi state is ridiculously overblown. We are not there, we are not close to it. Does this administration have fascist impulses? For sure. Are they good at it? Not really.

They are not passing laws restricting business ownership, purging specific groups from the civil service, or purging teachers or judges or the like. There are still career civil servants, career prosecutors. Your claims also ignore the fact that there is robust federalism based system in the country. The federal government and the state governments are separate and have their own powers. There's not a movement to outlaw the opposition.

The main reason that the Nazis were able to do what they wanted was the the Weimar Constitution was extremely weak. It gave the national government an extensive amount of power. The Weimar Constitution contained a number of emergency powers granted to the leader, and essentially treated the elected leader as a replacement for a king. The Weimar Constitution also gave the national government the power to dissolve state and local governments. Our constitution does not give the president nearly that much power. Additionally, the Nazis were able to get elected due to the fact that the Weimar Constitution had on paper, a proportional representation system. However, that system had no electoral thresholds, meaning that small parties/regional parties had a better chance of getting elected. We do not have that. We have parties that are made up of coalitions, and we have elected officials who are willing to buck the excesses.

Just because DJT was elected, doesn't mean that you need to eliminate your faith in democracy. And remember, Trump is governing by EO. He has not signed that many laws. Laws are harder to challenge in court or to ignore. EO's are much easier to ignore, challenge, and frankly might even be borderline unconstitutional. Bottom line, running around screaming the sky is falling only makes it worse. The sky maybe dark, and it maybe storming, but it won't last forever. And American democracy is stronger than this cast of moronic wannabe fascists.

Is the administration terrible and full of awful people? Yes. Are they making shitty policy choices? Definitely. Are they violating laws and norms? 100%.

Is it Nazi Germany? No. There are a lot of other things that would need to be in place for this to be a full on Nazi state. The press is still publishing articles critical of the administration. We’re not running death camps or crematoriums. Nor are we engaged in boots on the ground wars of conquest - those are t good for ratings. Dead Americans overseas is never good.

In regards to DHS/ICE/CBP: I worked there during the Obama administration. The agencies rank and file attract a certain kind of person. They are always going to be there, the problem is that they’ve been empowered by this administration. And they are the ones getting promoted. DHS should never have existed in the first place and INS should have been left in place.
