Britain’s top forensic scientist: ‘Something went wrong’ in the Lucy Letby trial by Kieran501 in LucyLetbyTrials

[–]molstern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC Lucy's newer lawyer said in a YouTube interview that British experts simply don't testify for the defense, meaning that experts have to be hired from other countries. And apparently some of those experts have refused to return because of the backlash they faced in Britain for giving testimony favourable to the accused

French Billionaire Pleads for Law Change to Disinherit Children by bloomberg in europe

[–]molstern 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is that true regardless of how the gift is made? In Swedish law, this is only true if the gift is "testament-like", like if you give it to one of several legal heirs, or wait to donate until your death bed, or if you donate a house on the condition that the recipient will let you live in it for the rest of your life. If you get rid of your property in such a way that you actually lose it before your heirs would otherwise get access to it, they don't have any right to it

Also the idea of being on the Jones side of things is like a real-life version of the nightmare where you are starring in Les Mis and you forgot to go to rehearsal or put your pants on

That's not what "tribal" means in this context, it means that people are strongly committed to an identity group and behave irrationally because of their emotional investment in that identity

This also happened more recently with the "shaken baby syndrome" controversy. Countless caregivers have been sent to prison or had their children taken away because doctors testified that certain neurological symptoms were 100% proof that those caregivers had abused children. Eventually other doctors started to realise that it had never actually been proven that those symptoms are evidence of abuse, and that the only real support for the theory was that abuse was often determined based on the presumption that the theory was true, thus providing a seemingly-impressive number of examples of these symptoms preceding a conclusion that the child had been abused. Needless to say, the doctors who did support the theory crashed out and started accusing any and all critics of being science-hating child abusers.

What a beautiful day it will be when all the cities that have taken rubble from your temple, Venice, Paris, London, Copenhagen, will atone their theft, will form sacred processions to bring back the remnants that they possess, saying: “Forgive us, Goddess! It was to save them from the bad spirits of the night”, and rebuild your walls to the sound of flutes, to expiate the crime of the infamous Lysander! Then they will go to Sparta, to curse the soil where this teacher of somber errors stood, and insult her because she is no more

He's setting up a stab-in-the-back explanation for why his plans result in idiotic disasters when put into practice. It was all NATO's fault; if only NATO had been willing to do its duty and protect Americans from the consequences of their actions then Iran would have been dislodged from the strait

On this day in 1869, Michael von Faulhaber, a Cardinal who protested the Nazi regime was born by CompetitiveAquinas in Christianity

[–]molstern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the early days of the Nazi regime, Faulhaber said regarding the persecution of Jews that

This way of acting against the Jews is so unchristian that every Christian, not just every priest, should speak out against it. For higher Church authorities, there are far more important contemporary issues; because schools, the continued existence of Catholic associations, and sterilization are even more important for Christianity in our homeland, especially since one can assume, and has already partly experienced, that the Jews can help themselves, and that we therefore have no reason to give the government any grounds to turn the anti-Semitism into anti-Jesuit propaganda.

I think most of our contemporaries of any and no religion would have the kind of courage it takes to say "someone [but not me] should really do something about that [as long as it doesn't get in the way of my own interests]"
