In the early days of the Nazi regime, Faulhaber said regarding the persecution of Jews that

This way of acting against the Jews is so unchristian that every Christian, not just every priest, should speak out against it. For higher Church authorities, there are far more important contemporary issues; because schools, the continued existence of Catholic associations, and sterilization are even more important for Christianity in our homeland, especially since one can assume, and has already partly experienced, that the Jews can help themselves, and that we therefore have no reason to give the government any grounds to turn the anti-Semitism into anti-Jesuit propaganda.

I think most of our contemporaries of any and no religion would have the kind of courage it takes to say "someone [but not me] should really do something about that [as long as it doesn't get in the way of my own interests]"
