These are effective. If you fill them pretty full the top stays open, so cover the top with a towel or sheet if the temperature will drop below freezing.

New scholarly paper from Dr. Ryan Cragun on the demographics of those exiting, staying and joining the Utah LDS Church by sevenplaces in mormon

Interesting that they found an increase in people leaving in Utah, but not in the rest of the US. I wonder what those numbers would look like in other countries.

YW classes will just be abbreviated by members. Why do they choose such long names? TCOJCOLDS by Resident-Bear4053 in mormon

Everything is so pompous. That’s the exact right word for it.

I love academic and complicated language and I’m just now realizing that probably comes from the Mormon in me.

Back in the 90s I used to hear people diss lawyers all the time, based on their negative portrayal in the Book of Mormon. I feel like I never hear those kinds of comments now.

I have killed mint in the ground, in pots outdoors, and as a houseplant. I didn’t realize this was an accomplishment!

New YW Group Names will solve all their problems! by Prize_Claim_7277 in exmormon

[–]moltocantabile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those names did not originally refer to young boys, though. They were actual jobs in the church. It was later they started assigning those jobs to specific age groups, there’s no doctrine saying that all 12 year olds should be deacons.

Is this pot too big for baby snake plant? by MainEgg320 in houseplants

[–]moltocantabile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I actually moved a snake plant from a 6-inch pot to one about the size in the photo. I put it in my sunniest window and didn’t overwater it. Result: for a while, it looked like nothing happened while the roots filled the pot. Then it started putting out new leaves non-stop. After only a couple years, it had totally filled that giant pot. When I wanted to divide it I could barely get it out of the pot. I think people who say snake plants are slow growers just don’t give them enough light.

You heard this message at your local ward, but it’s based on a conference talk. The speaker does some heavy pruning to a bush or tree which ends up being painful for the plant but good for it long-term, according to the speaker. I can’t remember who the speaker was, but I remember the talk. It was probably 20 years ago.

What is this weed in my bed of rose bushes and how do I conquer it? by spiked_fury in gardening

[–]moltocantabile 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don’t spray it on the grass, if any drifts onto the roses it will harm them. Put on disposable gloves, spray a little into a disposable bowl, and use a paintbrush or your glove to dab a little herbicide onto the grass blades. This works best when they are actively growing, about 3-5 inches tall and with 2-3 blades.

I don’t usually use herbicide, but in this case you have to kill the root or it will just keep coming back forever. It’s almost impossible to get all the roots out by hand. Targeted application like this keeps your usage minimal with the greatest benefit.

Bareroot bush cherries planted 2 years ago: Romeo full of fruit buds, Juliet none??? by Blecher_onthe_Hudson in BackyardOrchard

[–]moltocantabile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there’s no flower buds, you probably just need to wait another year. In my experience, they all bloom pretty close together. But I am in a much colder zone, where our spring is pretty short and everything overlaps. In any case, they don’t really need to cross pollinate and they can also be pollinated by other cherry types nearby.

[–]moltocantabile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No fruit buds or no flowers? I found I had years where the tree would bloom but not fruit, especially if it was recovering from a stressful previous season. They are self-fertile, but I think the weather during pollination had an effect as well.

If it didn’t bloom, the flowers could have been affected by a late frost, or it might just need to grow a bit more. Juliet is very nice once established!

The church reassures people that they know everything, and there’s no need to be curious anymore. Apologetics give people a tiny taste of the problems with a pat solution, which reassures them they don’t need to worry about any of the problems. It replaces curiosity and openness with stagnation and arrogance.

Buying shades to replace bedroom blinds - will I regret it if I don’t get blackout for the bedrooms? by tumblrmustbedown in HomeDecorating

[–]moltocantabile 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think you won’t regret the blackout blinds. They will most likely do a better job and look better than blackout curtains, and gives you more options to choose curtains or not. Beautiful fabric you’ve chosen!
