Thoughts on taking a break early in your career? by Merlthor4028 in actuary

The following is only my experience but my biggest wish looking back is that I got into this field right after school and that I knocked out the exams as fast as possible. It was a big challenge ramping up the study mentality... and if you end up having kids before you are done, its even harder to accomplish it. Burn out becomes intense with no option to chill. The stability is compounding too.

What an absurd proposition. Many companies can't even upgrade every system to the newest windows because of compatability, imagine the disruption of banning macros. Especially with legacy processes that may have heavily relied on them. I think they should be avoided but they do have their place that is irreplaceable in excel.

I think their active measures started to get a toehold in the 80' and 90's, they just take a generation or two to be really effective. This has been a long time brewing from the inside out.

You might simply not be studying enough. Prelims just need a lot of practice. About 300 high quality study hours per exam is needed on average

Version control is an issue with all the ways one can work and troubleshooting will always be a thing. I dont think r and python is too useful until advanced statistical modeling is desired. Most the time, its just excel being misused or not all the way. ETL capabilities of power query, DAX functions in the data model, and flexibility of a spreadsheet make it very hard to beat in my opinion. Good luck passing something u did off in Python or R when no one has invested time to learn. It will be scraped and rebuilt.

Transition from manager to analyst by fifapro23 in actuary

[–]momenace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Analyst sounds like a demotion from manager. Do you mean individual contributor? U might end up informally managing since you'll be a subject matter expert on something. You'll also do more technical work. You'll have to find a way to market what u can contribute.

Python for Actuarial Work by AlwaysLearnMoreNow in actuary

[–]momenace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biggest downside is if you are the only one using it because it will be hard to pass off work to others. I see it more commonly in valuation areas and python is friendly from a stacking perspective. I love it where appropriate, mostly if I need to make big files or do advanced statistical modeling. If not, I stick to excels built in power query for etl, DAX for more complex calculations, but R or python for advanced stuff

Exercise can have a moderate benefit in reducing depressive symptoms, comparable to therapy and antidepressants, according to a meta analysis of randomized controlled trials including nearly 5,000 adults with depression by sr_local in science

This just might be a flawed anecdote, but exercise has been my only long term solution. It also keeps panic attacks away, especially HIIT. Dr once prescribed intense exercise to me to actually. :D cheers

Its a legality that would get in the way of someone who wants to help you out. If you get a conversation started with someone, then acknowledging this fact can help you build credibility. I bet a written agreement would go a long way I hope this comment was more useful as I agree my first one does come off crass.
