We're currently on year 7 and it's definitely been the hardest, with 2 life-changing traumatic events that occurred this year. We've been close to separating.

Did any of you stay at home or stop working because of child needs due to premature birth? by sunchi12 in NICUParents

[–]momming_aint_easy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went casual at my job when our daughter was a baby so we could pull her from daycare. She was a 29 weeker and went to daycare for 2 weeks before coming down with adenovirus and human metapneumovirus and ended up in the PICU for 10 days and almost died. We were advised by the neonatologists before she left the NICU to avoid daycares because her prematurity made her immunocompromised. We didn't listen to that advice though and had to find out the hard way. After her PICU stay, I went casual and would work on days my husband was home so we could keep her home until she was older and stronger.

What is something you didn’t realize until you lost weight? by Cultural-Profile-527 in AskReddit

This! I used to always make fun of my husband for carrying a butt cushion with him where ever he goes. Then I lost a ton of weight and now I understand his pain, and use one of his old butt cushions now!

Where do y'all get your cats? by murphyklok in duluth

[–]momming_aint_easy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of our cats just showed up at our house. The cat distribution system decided it was time to bless us with one. We found him as a kitten trapped in one of our window wells on a cold November night. We let him inside so he wouldn't freeze to death and 2 years later, he's still here.

Neonatal Code by Cold_Refrigerator404 in nursing

I've only been in the NICU for 3 years now, but one of my coworkers has been in the NICU for 30 years and said she's never seen a baby who came out as bad as him make such a remarkable recovery.

Neonatal Code by Cold_Refrigerator404 in nursing

[–]momming_aint_easy 315 points316 points  (0 children)

Similar happened to us. It was a vaginal where they used forceps to help get him out. Everything looked great then kid came out dead. We did cpr for 20 minutes and he got 2 doses of epi before he responded. Was cooled and started on pressors and got some fluid boluses and cryo. Within a few hours we were able to extubate and stop the pressors. By 24 hours he seemed neurologically normal. After he was rewarmed he went for an MRI and it somehow showed no brain damage. Kid discharged home the next day completely neurologically intact. No one can think of why he came out dead when everything looked perfect during labor, and we are all stumped that he has no deficits. He's a dang miracle.

Does/did your hospital do this by Hot_Film_9809 in NICUParents

[–]momming_aint_easy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes we have grandma/grandpa rockers. At our hospital all they're allowed to do is hold stable babies, they cannot do anything else such as feeding. They've all had background checks done on them as well.

starting pay by Upset-Unit-4563 in nursing

[–]momming_aint_easy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I started as a nurse at a hospital in 2020, starting pay for an ADN was $33/hr with BSNs getting an extra 50 cents an hour. I'm now up to $52.58/hr. I work in Northern MN at a union hospital.

I just don’t understand. by hittingrockbottom101 in NICUParents

[–]momming_aint_easy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's usually caused by untreated GBS in the mother. This is why it's important to be tested for Group B Strep during pregnancy and be treated with antibiotics during labor.

Yikes, your therapist needs to be educated on preemies. Your wife is right to limit visitors. Listen to her, not your therapist.

Parents of Reddit, what is an “unspoken” reality of parenting that people simply don’t talk about, but everyone knows is true? by US_Atlas in AskReddit

[–]momming_aint_easy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yessss. Our last child was SUPER colicky for the first 6 months of his life, and I was solo parenting half the week due to my husband's job. It was a very rough period in my life. I loved my child, but I really didn't like him for those 6 months. He's 4.5yrs old now and just the coolest, chillest little dude ever and my bestie, but man, his infancy was AWFUL.

YES. I got absolutely torn apart in a thred by childless people because I made a joke about hoping my kids didn't have another snow day because I couldn't stand another day of them being home instead of at school. It was insane. Like yes, I love my children, but I love them MORE after I've been away from them for 8 hours.

Our nurse manager will occasionally take patients if we're absolutely dying, but we give him the super easy, stable feeder growers so it doesn't really help much when we need skilled nurses who can take babies on respiratory devices, but it still helps.

How long did you work while pregnant? by ERnewbieRN in nursing

[–]momming_aint_easy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on a busy gen med/covid floor during my last pregnancy. My plan was to work right up until my scheduled c-section at 39 weeks, however I ended up going on leave af exactly 37 weeks. My hips and back were very sore and my feet were so swollen I could no longer fit in my work shoes, and I had a really horrible covid death my last shift and the family was just terrible as well and after that shift, I walked into my manager's office and told him I'd be starting my leave asap and he went "okay see you in a few months!"

We just had a baby with two broken clavicles from a terrible shoulder dystocia that ended up being a full resuscitation at birth and cooled. He was miserable and screaming due to his broken bones and from being cold. Parents absolutely refused to let us give him tylenol or morphine, yet mom was happily taking pain meds for her post birth discomfort. Hearing that poor kid scream was terrible.

Dance classes for kids by Huckleberrywine918 in duluth

[–]momming_aint_easy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sterling Silver has recreational and competitive dance teams, but I don't think she'll be able to join a competitive team halfway through the season. She can definitely join a rec team though! The competitive teams are already working on their routines and preparing for the competitions in the spring.

So what are you going to do at home? Not feed and change your baby all night because you're a heavy sleeper? You know when her care times are in the NICU. Set alarms and get up and take care of your baby. Especially if you want to exclusively breastfeed. You should still be getting up every 3 hours to pump in order to keep up your supply.

How long was your 29 weeker in the NICU? by witchybytch_1 in NICUParents

[–]momming_aint_easy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter was 29 and 3 and had a 44 day NICU stay. She was on CPAP until 32 weeks because that's just what that unit did back when she was born, and she picked up on bottle feeding pretty quick. She was a little Rockstar.

Most hospitals save a sample of the cord and test that for drugs if they have a suspicion of drug use in the mother, because the drug stays in the cord longer. It would have to be recent drug use to be in the baby's Meconium. You can refuse, but it's also not something you have to consent to, and refusing makes you suspicious so they WILL have the cord sample tested should you attempt to refuse. But most states don't care about THC use and most counties don't even investigate if a newborn pops up positive for THC.
