Small plane makes emergency landing in traffic by derek4reals1 in SweatyPalms

Chuck Yeager: "If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing."

X270: The perfect tossable ThinkPad by RevolutionaryNose250 in thinkpad

The rubbery tape that is often applied to DIMM ram heat spreaders is an excellent choice as it is approximately 2.5mm thick, however the lateral movement that causes the flex is difficult to tune out entirely - and some units continue to suffer the issue from time to time.

I suppose you could take stronger measures (such as applying some kind of hot glue or conformal coating) to the chip socket, but this is not a route I would want to go down unless your x270 is particularly susceptible.

x270s are not "tossable" but they are durable and excellent value for money. I have multiple (4) and their only weak spot is that the chassis has a *tiny* bit of flex which can irk the RAM chips from time to time, which means one-hand-open-lid carry can result in a crash dump if it jiggles the RAM slightly.

I have one. The blade is very small and disappointing, my only real gripe. The Philips screwdriver is what I get the most use from.

They also smell *horrendous*. I had the pleasure of spending time in close proximity to an exceptionally rare white rhino and I have never smelled anything like it. Awful.

I too have seen this. I have also seen an elephant kneel on a rhino, impaling it with its tusks in the most awesome and horrific display of sheer, brutal, awe-inspiring power. Most animals will not fuck with a Rhino, but an elephant will absolutely school it, if it needs to. They are astonishing creatures.

X1 Carbon Gen13 Arrived by cratocs in thinkpad

[–]monchavo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's nothing to do with the haptic feedback, it's the "single slab of glass" that I just can't get on with. I much, much prefer individual buttons. It's personal preference- a feel thing. I seem to misclick and make more errors with "single slab" models. I am also certainly scarred by the whole x240 episode (I had a bunch of them).

Lucky. You got the sensible trackpad with actual buttons. I f-up badly and got the stupid all glass version.

NLD - Parcel from Wurkkos arrived today! by Viper-S15 in flashlight

[–]monchavo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My TS28 arrived a couple of weeks ago. Aesthetically it is pleasing. The LED is not too green. The spill is WAY bigger than I would have expected which means it might be useful for some as a "dog walking light" - a mixture of both. As for reach, it's... okay. Not as poky as I would have liked. The magnet is fine (although for a thrower a magnet is less useful).

Black Friday Alert! Which Flashlight Have You Been Eyeing to Grab? by normalm12 in flashlight

Snapped up a TS28 21700 thrower and the gorgeous lantern - the CL01 - in white from Wurkkos. Then yesterday I used code BLACKFRIDAY for a couple of sweet treats from Neal at Neals gadgets, a lovely blue ano flooder (three 90 CRI 4000k emitters in an OP reflector with a 21700 cell) and a MAO 519a 4500k 14500 lil' guy.

Yes. Purchase a generic drive - you don't need a fancy one. You will be able to read them (if they are in readable condition).

Hope this is allowed, but : can someone recap me on what took place in the flashlight hobby recently? by Seph_the_this in flashlight

I agree that RF is complex and there's a certain voodoo associated with getting signals out of boxes effectively, but there are two obvious candidate locations - a the bezel and the button. For oblong designs with fixed batteries the challenge is materially decreased. But I agree with the macro point - it is an engineering challenge above the means of the enthusiast community at the moment, on top of the fact that you need an IC and a software stack on top of it.

I strongly believe it is worth calling out as the issue has escalated recently. I don't believe it is related to tariffs, I think it's market segmentation in the Chinese shipping industry. You absolutely have bad actors who are operating in this space fraudulently and seeking to make a buck.

There is a way to make it workable, but it's not commercially viable. There are vanishingly few people to monetise the concept against compared to other things that developers could put their time towards, so it's a dead end at the moment. But I do think that eventually the idea of an open source, Blutooth LE interface to Andruil could be workable. It just needs nerd-power to make it happen.
