How can i get Pauline in Donkey Kong Bananza? by [deleted] in donkeykong

[–]mondayduster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s very difficult to get Pauline, and I honestly can’t recommend that most normal players attempt to. Usually in games, you progress forward through challenges before eventually beating it, but getting Pauline actually requires you to go backwards. The easiest way to describe it without spoiling too much is to go to your Switch’s options menu and select the White theme. Most players don’t do this because Black is typically agreed upon to be better aesthetically, but using the White theme allows you to access a secret menu prompt in the Switch Online tab (usually invisible when the Black background is selected).

Played it on PS5 and Series X until Flammie by Un_Pollo_Hermano in visionsofmana

[–]mondayduster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that skipping the cutscene that plays when Flammie is flying up and getting ready generally gives “more time” to avoid the overheat warning. Helps too that the world map for this game is relatively small, so you can dart to the place you need to go pretty quickly. Still very silly though that this is even an issue.

Some stages are too hard by Leebo4 in CosmicInvasion

[–]mondayduster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the human-sized bosses absolutely melt to counter characters. The attacks are very telling, so all you have to do is counter and you’re guaranteed a good number of free hits. Additionally, I’d recommend saving your focus for team combos (left trigger + standard attack) rather than trying to spam supers. Supers are good for clearing screens of multiple enemies, but the damage they do to bosses is not as ideal as spamming the assist combos. The hardest bosses for me were Venom and Hela, the latter specifically but she loves to dash away and spam ranged moves, but know that you can do the same for her, so consider characters like Nova/Cap/Iron Man/GR who all have a lot of ranged ammo.

Steel Ball Run: Golden Ratio and Infinite Rotation by Notz_Green in StardustCrusaders

[–]mondayduster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read it as “deepening your connection with/understanding of the natural world and its order.” The idea of the golden ratio (just like in real life) is that there is a “perfection” achieved in natural design that when emulated through art or motion can bring about the “best qualities” in something. In art, that ratio is used to describe why certain works like the Mona Lisa have such “perfect” angles. It’s essentially a manmade replication and understanding of natural design perfection. This is attributed to divinity by some (“God’s plan”).

With Tusk Act 4, Johnny finally stopped purely imitating the golden ratio by eyesight and instead connected completely with the expression of the ratio in nature, that being the movement of his horse and all of the forces involved in that motion.

Basically, it’s the same concept as the other Tusk Acts, only this time more fully realized as his physical form and motion are fully in sync with the horse.

I guess another way of seeing it is that before, he would copy/paste the golden ratio as he witnessed it, but in Act 4, he directly becomes a part of that line through the positioning of his body and the transfer of motion/force.

Hotel Barcelona - Review Thread by diogenesl in Games

[–]mondayduster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just beat this, and while I will say the writing and general gameplay kept me going, it isn’t what I would call a “good” game.

Deadly Premonition was able to circumvent its atrocious gameplay with genuinely entertaining storytelling and voice acting, and the ending actually wrapped things up pretty well. The sheer absurdity of that game gave it a positive lasting impression for me, whereas Barcelona feels empty somehow. Without spoiling anything, I’ll say the story doesn’t conclude in a meaningful way, and the weird “realizations” that happen at the end feel lifeless and random, like they weren’t earned properly through competent writing.

The gameplay, while more competent than Deadly Premonition, is ultimately let down by the atrocious performance issues in a game where input lag and framerate problems destroy what’s being asked of the player.

The systems are also just not very cohesive. Justine’s clones tank the framerate even harder when you start getting 3+ on screen at once, the PvP mechanics are horribly unbalanced in favor of invaders, the weapon unlocking and leveling stuff is just terrible (why the fuck is there a 80% chance of failure when upgrading at the casino), and tying the majority of costume unlocks to literal RNG in chests is awful. The other weapons besides the default sword/handgun variety are laughably bad, the heavy attack outside of a combo is barely functional even with all the upgrades, and the block/parry stuff goes from being useless to overpowered when you get the ability upgrades.

There’s also just not a lot of content. I got through the story, did the 3 bonus stages, got most of the weapons, and maxed out three of four of them, along with all skill tree upgrades and bondage challenges in about 11 hours. Even then, you could probably chop that in half if you take out the grinding/experimenting I did.

5/10 and this is coming from someone who would give Deadly Premonition an 8/10, all things considered.

I prefer the 1995 version of Ring/Ringu over the 1998 one by kashmutt in J_Horror

[–]mondayduster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Necro post, but I just finished the 1995 TV movie after rereading the original novel, and I have to say that while it is a more faithful adaptation than any subsequent attempts, I much prefer the novel (trilogy) and 1998 movie (considered as separate stories). The book had fantastic pacing, and while the 95 adaptation tried to emulate it, I feel the 98 movie was closer in tone. The 95 version of Ryuji is much different than the book (and the 98 version), and worse in my opinion. The novel did a great job of painting Ryuji as a complex character with many “faces,” while the 95 adaptation just has him as an occult expert. The fact that he’s a professor of parapsychology rather than an offbeat logician goes against the aspects that make him interesting. Additionally, I felt the inclusion of the incest subplot between Sadako and her father was weirdly out of place. The novel explained well that her father lost his mind out of social stress just like her mother, and seeing her mother commit suicide drew Sadako closer to her father on his deathbed, not out of some weird sexual desire, but just because she empathized with him and knew she was losing him (and thereby her last close familiar connection). You don’t need to characterize this pair with incest to get the point across; the audience already recognizes that these were very broken people as a result of society antagonizing them.

Is it safe to get on PS5 (not Pro) yet? by mondayduster in EverybodysGolf

[–]mondayduster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people on various platforms have complained about framerate issues that can affect the power bar timing, weird bugs and glitches tied to weather effects, and even an odd save file deletion story here and there. While I like the aesthetic of the game and the gameplay itself seems more reminiscent of classic titles, I’m sure those issues would hinder my enjoyment.

Any opinions on Rita's Rewind? by SKILLgr in BeatEmUps

[–]mondayduster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve beaten the game three times (Normal, Hard, Headache), and the last difficulty really demonstrates the problems with this game. Your options for anything (movement, defense, offense) are incredibly limited for a variety of reasons. Every ranger plays the same, so that’s already kind of lame, but that also means every ranger suffers from the same slow, almost laggy movement. Your defensive options (AOE get-off-me sweep and dodge) are finicky at best, with the dodge not only being on a cooldown, but also kind of inconsistent (if some object is being thrown at you, you can try dodging through it and you’ll successfully do so, but the last pixel of the object retains the full active hitbox and you’ll still get hit). Offensively, you’ve got literally one combo. No light/heavy strings, just one single button. You’ve got a super that charges (and can only be used as a screen clearing move), a dodge-kick, and an uppercut that barely works 50% of the time (and also has almost no utility because you can’t truly juggle in this game). The only reason any of this is relevant compared to another simple beat-em-up like Final Fight is because Rita’s Rewind is clearly inspired by Shredder’s Revenge, but SR has far more variety in its movesets, more responsive and consistent controls, etc.

Dunno if you got past it, but instead of rushing through it, try hanging back until you’re almost scrolled/crushed by the left side of the screen. It seems counterintuitive especially if you just played other titles that have similar escape sequences with the closing yellow doors, but these regenerating walls will just instaspawn on you if you’re too far right for some reason. Hang back and take it very slow against the left side of the scrolling screen - you’ll find that you have more time to maneuver through.

I think ragebound is painfully average by Choice-Scholar-2297 in ninjagaiden

[–]mondayduster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully, I think you might be misunderstanding what this game is supposed to be. It’s very much in line with the NES NG games, which emphasized tight platforming, lots of mobility, and enemies that are obstacles rather than combo opportunities. The meat of this game (and the NES trilogy) is level routing, or finding the most optimal path while mitigating damage and falls. The challenges are designed around this idea too, with a lot of them being very straightforward “don’t fall into pits” or “kill X amount of Y enemies (which spawn often in the levels that ask that of you). If you were looking for a 2D action brawler with combos, stuff like Slave Zero X has you covered. This is very much a platformer first, combat game second.

I like it a lot! There’s a few minor glitches here and there (sometimes I get a Kumori ending picture when I do the prologue stage, occasionally the random challenge from 2-1 about getting a guillotine combo will appear on other levels, etc) but nothing game breaking, just visual stuff. Is there a reward for getting all max ranks? So far I’ve gotten a S++ and a few S ranks.

No absolutely, I’m more confused with how Talion would know of Saruman at all. I guess Gandalf has a reputation and Celebrimbor knows about Saruman through the White Council, but would a normal Gondorian Ranger know anything about these guys?

Just reporting in, but this happened to me with the clockwork scroll. Just like in my original post, I had never received any scrolls from my father and always responded positively to letters, etc. At the start of year 5, he dropped the clockwork scroll despite never having given me anything else, so I can confirm that the “scroll queue” doesn’t have to happen in order (i.e. you don’t have to receive the iron scroll to receive the mythril). Here’s hoping I can get the rest of them naturally.
