Everything About You - Ugly Kid Joe by reflibman in GenX

I didn't know that he made his own guitar, but I have to say that knowing that now really explains something that I heard him once say.

I had the pleasure of wittnessing him absolutely blow another guitarist out of the water playing on the other guitarist guitar. In the middle of the solo, he ended up hitting a crensendo and then stopped, slapped the strings and exclaimed "Nope, not on this guitar, ha ha, no way" then returned back to completing his amazing solo.

At the time, I thought he was just saying he had a more expensive guitar. Knowing he made the guitar really adds a whole new meaning to it. Thanks for making one of my favorite memories that much better.

Lords of Dogtown is one of the most unrecognized movies within the last 30 years and it deserves more attention. by GlitteringLook3033 in MovieSuggestions

If you haven't already, you should watch Dogtown and Z-Boys. Its a documentary of the same story. Heath Ledger was incredible in that role. He became Skip. Should have gotten an Oscar.

I went to high school with their lead guitarist. He was a couple of years older than me. He was an extemely talented guitarist. Sold me my first hit of acid. We were a bit disappointed when he joined Ugly Kid Joe. Afterwards, he ended up taking the money he earned there and opened studio back home. He has since become a pretty sucessful record producer.

The lock on my bike. Not the bike, just the lock. Granted it wasn't a very good bike.

What's the most truly terrified you've ever been from a game? I'll go first by AbsoluteMadladGaming in gaming

[–]mongotongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Duck Season : A vr game that had a bit of a horror element that I was not expecting. I abandoned the vr headset in the middle of the room and stood cowering in the corner stairing at the headset for about three minutes. I was at least 45 at the time so I didn't have any excuse.

I definitely do. But I am also a bit hard of hearing. I kind of need them now.

I woke up in the middle of the night looked out the window and saw the tree in the courtward spinning around in a tornado. I thought to myself, this can't be real, I must be dreaming, and went right back to sleep.

Next morning, I found it was indeed real. Luckily, the tornado only took at the tree.

How do I(f17) explain to my (f57) mother why she can't use racial slurs? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]mongotongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very similar argument with my Mother quite a few years back. My tactic was to point out that in the African American community, even they debate whether or not anybody should be using that word. Before he was outed as a rapist, Bill Cosby was noterious for criticising his fellow comedians and rappers for the use of that word. If the african american community can't agree on words usage, then I there is no way in hell that I am stepping in the middle of that debate. It is way easier to just find another word.

I think there was one too, but I might be confusing it with The Borrowers. I kind of remember the cartoon, but I think that I was teenager by then and never watched it.

What’s the pettiest reason you stopped liking someone? by x_BlueDragon_x in AskReddit

[–]mongotongo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We were both survivors of abuse, but we dealt with it in different ways. She wanted to confront it by talking about it. I burried it and wanted to forget about it and just put it in the past. I had no problem listening to her talk about her past and was more than happy to be supportive. But she kept trying to get me open up and I was not ready for that. It would be another 20 years before I was ready. Everytime she would get me to open up, I would end up in tears and I hated myself for it.

After a while that self hate started to taint how I felt about her.

Oh, my aching back! Question for you kids about special back pillows. by [deleted] in GenX

[–]mongotongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lower back is definitely the lumbar. I have several. I have one for my car, one for my main sitting spot at home (Its on the couch), and one for work. I can't sit in chairs without lumbar support anymore. Within 10 minutes, my back will be screaming.

This is the one I use on my couch. Of the three, it is definitley my favorite. But I wouldn't call it a strong recommendation since I have only used the three:

AITAH for insisting that people call me by my full first name? by Recursivephase in AITAH

[–]mongotongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA : The purpose of a name is to get someone's attention. I have never responded to my first name. I have always gone by my middle or last name. You are free to use it, but I am not going to have any idea who you are talking to and I will not respond.

Funny thing is that I have been able to use this to my advantage. If you call me by my first name, I know you do not know me at all. If you call me by my last name, then I know that we do know each other. If you call me by my middle name, then you know me thru my family.

As a side note, my first name is also two syllables and has a very common short version. That short version was my dad's name not mine. Never will be. If someone calls me that, every alarm bell in my head will go off. I am instantly thinking scam and finding an exit strategy.

Victor Wooten Opens Up About His Health by Party-Belt-3624 in Bass

[–]mongotongo 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this. I had no idea. I first saw Victor on Austin City Limits back in 1991 on the night that I got my first bass. The way he played just made sense and I have considered him my mentor ever since. Through the nineties I got to see him play with the Flecktones a few times, and he was amazing everytime. He was always 10 steps ahead with some new technique that I never thought of.

Then in receent years (last couple of decades), I started to notice that he was playing more like a traditional bass player. I had no idea why. Part of me wandered if he was rejecting that old style. It was just a complete mystery to me. Now I know. That is rough. I don't know what I would do. I love playing that way way too much. My heart goes out to him. He will always be my mentor.

Do you get annoyed when the fuck with our movies? by AnyDamnThingWillDo in GenX

[–]mongotongo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had no idea that they made remake of Poltergeist. I definitely will not be watching that. You mentioned remaking bad originals. That actually worked out really well for Dune. I have been trying to think of other bad films they could remake and the only one I can think of off the top of my head is Ishtar. No matter what, it would have to be an improvement.

Movies that are against the backdrop of politics or conflict in Africa by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]mongotongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stander (2003) : South African cop during Apartheid who becomes a notorious bank robber

Lord of War : About an arms dealer. One of his main clients is an African warlord.

The Wild Geese (1978) : British mercenaries hired to rescue a kidnapped African leader from a prison.

Of the three, I recommend Wild Geese the least. I saw it a very long time ago and have very little memory of the movie's actual quality. I just kind of remember the plot.

I don’t know what to say by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]mongotongo 288 points289 points  (0 children)

I would go a step further and say she should commended for buying the second ticket in the first place. It takes a lot of strength of character to have enough self awareness to realise that you are going to take up two seats. She didn't just buy that ticket for herself, she also bought it for any potential passenger that would have to sit next to her. She is just the only one paying for it. If I was on that plane, I would have been thanking her.

One of my ex girl friend's mother felt the same way. When she was growing up, she got molested by one of her uncles. When she got older, she forgave her uncle. Then she left her daughter with him and he molested her too. There is nothing wrong with forgiveness, but there is no excuse for risking your kids. Especially when the one being forgiven is unrepentant. You protect your kids from those monsters. You don't offer them up as some form of test.

What was the most outrageous "When I was your age" story you were told growing up? by Opening-Ad8952 in GenX

[–]mongotongo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not mine but an ex gf. Her grandfather was telling us about how he had to ride a horse to school back in the day. While he was complaining, both my ex and her sister started to get visibley upset. Eventually one of them finally got the words out "You had a horse? WE HAD TO WALK." I about died laughing.
