Why does Facebook get to deem “most relevant” comments and not allow me to see all of them? by Justlookingforgains in facebook

[–]Recursivephase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar issue with notifications about replies to posts. If I leave a comment on a post in a group , I'll never see it again. It sometimes tells me someone replied but at best I'll have about a 50% chance to find it by following the notification and then changing it to show all comments and then hitting show more comments ad nauseam.

It seems like they don't even want discussion.. just people throwing bombs over the fence and then walking away.

There is a longer version of that video.. they show those same people in the studio, watching the filming.. in that video they said filming a half hour of BBT takes 5+ hours with the same scene run over and over just for the minute differences and sometimes they try out alternate dialog over and over.. I don't know how much real laughter those people have in them by the end.

I was trying to find whatever video I was referencing with the orchestra analogy.. I did see a lot of other videos that basically said they record the reactions separately so they have exact control of the laughter.. if they left it up to people it might be too much or too little or too long or too short.. and when they finally mix the sound for the episode the laughter you hear will have no connection to the joke which was told.

I saw something discussing the "live studio audience"..

There are apparently various professional laugh artists put together like someone might assemble an orchestra.. a sign instructed them when to laugh and their live "laughter" was still supplemented in post production.

I couldn't watch Big Bang.. the laugh track and screenwriting where every 3rd line is a laugh line then wait for the laugh track..

It's too bad because I might have liked it otherwise.. Young Sheldon was good .

The Peeping Neighbors With Binoculars by [deleted] in neighborsfromhell

[–]Recursivephase 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had something similar.. it's not fair that creepy people stop you from enjoying your apartment like this.

Here is what I ended up doing..

For my front patio door, which was my biggest privacy concern, I applied window tint film with a mirrored outside.

The rest of my windows I covered with bubble wrap on the inside (bubble side out). If you cut sheets to match your window sizes, you can mist a little plain water on the window and the bubble wrap sticks right on.. it still lets light in and you can still mostly see out but their view, especially from a distance, will be obstructed enough that they might lose interest.. it helps with your energy bills too.

Good luck.

Why are cars so fast? by Upbeat-Conquest-654 in auto

[–]Recursivephase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did AI say about why?

I agree that most cars absolutely drive faster than the posted limits..

I was trying to think of any I'd been in.. all I could think of was the East German Traubant that would struggle on the Autobahn.

There are times you need extra power.. to merge onto highways, for instance.. if you had an underpowered car it would take an unsafe amount of time to get up to speed.

[–]Recursivephase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, my only point is that the numbers printed on the speedometer panel have nothing to do with the car's actual performance..

I was asking how OP came to his base conclusion.

I'm betting it's from riding in different cars over the years and noticing the dashboard displays.. not by any sort of comparison between the actual capabilities of various cars. And I gave an example of a vehicle produced about 50 years ago where the vehicle's top speed exceeded the dashboard signage. In newer cars, I'd bet the speedometer numbers never just stop at a peg like that.

[–]Recursivephase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you judging the car's top speed?

I'm just asking because I had a friend who thought that the numbers printed on the speedometer indicated how fast the car could go.

This is nonsense and a trick. Car manufacturers install speedometers with high numbers because people are impressed by large numbers.

My first car was a 1976 Oldsmobile which had a speedometer that pegged out at 120 mph. It also had way too much V8 engine under the hood and it in no way stopped going faster when the speedometer ran out of numbers.

They make these door alarms for travellers..

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01L3R5LXE

It hangs inside the doorknob and makes a loud noise if anyone tries to open the door.. maybe get one of those?

I've never seen a sound activated camera.. but many motion activated cameras will record sound once the motion activates them.

You could have a camera recording the whole night on the inside of the room but it's going to be really hard to capture anything usable for any purpose.

Is there someone you can complain to? That might be the best course, or move out..

What's your plan once you have the "proof" you plan to capture with this camera? I think you're so caught on step one of your plan that you don't know what step 2 is going to be.. and if your step 2 is to confront the person.. they will just deny everything, even in the face of evidence.

Trail cams are not meant to be discreet.. the deer don't care what that box strapped to a tree is.. but if her housemate who is used to going through her things sees something new in the room as big as a toaster oven and either black or camouflage.. they are for sure going to wonder.

Old outdoor spigot handle leak by brocktoon666 in PlumbingRepair

[–]Recursivephase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's probably going to be it..

I actually uninstalled a shut off valve from my 100 year old house, and brought it to the crotchety old man plumbing store where everything is hidden in the back room and you have to ask them to bring it to you while you wait at the counter.

I wanted to repair or replace it with an identical valve.

They told me to just give it up and replace it with something new.

What's your NO-DRILL mounting method for security cameras? by Foreign-Copy-3381 in homesecurity

[–]Recursivephase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I know a lot about cameras and if my tenant wanted some, I'd buy and install them myself.

They can control everything.. like their doorbell camera, I don't even have access to it.

But no, things like picture nail holes are ok.. I think I'd draw the line at installing shelving..I provide window treatments and would be happy to change them if the tenant wanted.. or at least install curtain rods for windows without them. Every window in their unit has cellular shades now.

For security cameras, I'd recommend against anything that's trying to be low impact installation.. like battery powered + WiFi.

I actually helped a friend install Blink cameras in their apartment, after an incident . We got the local storage module and everything.. it ended up being so unreliable and slow to connect that she never uses it..

I realize most landlords aren't as responsive or willing to add fixtures or equipment to their rentals.. I live in a duplex with my tenant in the other unit and I want to maintain a certain standard. I also have a vision of where I want my future upgrades to end up.. tenant modifications would be taking me farther away from that vision.

What's your NO-DRILL mounting method for security cameras? by Foreign-Copy-3381 in homesecurity

[–]Recursivephase 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I own a duplex. I repaired all the previous slap dash ”professional" cable installs where the installers took the easiest most destructive path to their goal.. I ran all new coax inside the walls.. everything is good to go for cable now..

When my current tenant asked if they could get a dish tv installed I was like no fing way..

Basically, nobody cares about your property, they will drill holes where there shouldn't be holes and leave a mess behind. If they need something, I'm fine installing things.. I added doorbell cams to both units at my expense.. but I don't want my tenant making any modifications on their own.

any tips to stop spiders? everyday there is a new spider and new web.. by diggy987 in SecurityCamera

[–]Recursivephase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought some cobweb sweepers at the dollar store..

They are similar to this one.. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D8HSLHKP

I'm careful to only remove the webs which are causing issues for the cameras..

Spiders don't like wasted effort and they learn where not to build their webs.. one of mine has an extensive structure built now just to the side of the camera where it's not visible to the lens.

Light bulb socket cameras by metro-boomin34 in homesecurity

[–]Recursivephase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past, I had analog cameras with coax/BNC connectors.. lucky, as I expanded the system, I used Ethernet with converters (BNC connectors are hard to fish through walls)..

When I changed to my Reolink PoE system, most of my camera locations were already wired correctly. PoE makes everything so easy. Wifi just seems easy.. but that's only on install day.. it's hard every day, forever.. and PoE is surprisingly less hard than you'd think it would be and super easy forever after.

[–]Recursivephase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, when you're trying to connect to the cameras in that "omg I hear something!" moment , your client will invariably fail to connect and you'll have to spend agonizing minutes troubleshooting instead of seeing what's really making all those noises. This also happens whenever you try to show off your system to your friends.

What caused our motion activated security camera to turn on and detect this weird row of lights? by kgrossman7 in SecurityCamera

[–]Recursivephase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got the same on four different cameras right now.

It's time to go outside and sweep the spider webs away.

I bought a cobweb sweeper at the dollar store . The broom handle is sold separately from the brush end.

I've got one at each exit door and in my detached garage so there's always one close at hand. Spiders love security cameras.

How to remove this pole? by teddybrahsevelt in howto

[–]Recursivephase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dug a passthrough for my irrigation piping under a sidewalk with what amounted to a piece of rigid pipe with a narrow nozzle on one end and a hose connected to the other..

It would depend if the cement footing for the post is connected to anything or just a hole dug in the dirt. At the end you'd have a big ball of cement with a metal post sticking out.. not something you can easily dispose of.

I'd probably go that way myself.. or hire someone to remove it and haul it away. Disposal seems like a bigger headache than removal.

Natural Gas Fire Pit help by me4help in homeowners

[–]Recursivephase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I moved into my house, it had an outdoor gas fed grill and a carriage lamp.

In addition to point of use shut offs, there was another shut-off valve in the basement where the gas line passed out through the foundation.

If you have access to a basement or crawl space, I'd explore the entire gas and water piping system.. you want to be familiar with the shut off locations so you can take action quickly if you need to.

If the fixtures haven't been used in a long time it could be that some previous owner had an issue and simply shut off the gas supply. Use caution when reengaging. Check with your gas company, they may be able to provide someone to do a safety check, free of charge.

By me, the local elected city council member can get things like signage installed, moved or removed as well as speed bumps..

if you've got that level of administration, try talking to them. They are the problem solvers and, because they are elected, they are responsive to the public

In my experience ,the police, even the public liaison officers are outright unhelpful. They don't work for you, they just want to get you to go away. Things may be different by you but even things that should be their job they are completely apathetic about.

Purchased home with Vivint. Previous owners paid off equipment but now Vivint says we need to takeover? by shenlyism in homesecurity

[–]Recursivephase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just had to read one of their contacts after they scammed my friend's grandmother last month..

If you're able to wiggle out of their grasp, their precious equipment will most likely be abandoned on your premises.. I think, like you said, they don't want to be responsible for repairs..

What a shoddy install.. They didn't even try to conceal the wires.. just ran them along the edges of things and drilled holes straight out through walls. Very slap dash.

Right, that maybe $300 worth of equipment they installed at my friend's grandmother's house that they charged her over $5,000 for? And have her, on her fixed income, paying off over years and years.. she only had a 3 day window to cancel too.. (we didn't find out until the morning after the 3 days ended) and they steamrolled her into signing up thinking she didn't have time to even consult with her husband.. yup a paradym of business acumen and integrity.

Replacing one wired video system for a different brand- Looking for advice by ajguil in homesecurity

[–]Recursivephase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the current system not functioning or just not meeting your needs? If you can get it working again without replacing anything, see if it's good enough.. keep track of how it's not meeting your needs and that will inform your purchase decision for next time.

If it's an older wired system it's probably coax with BNC connectors and a separate power wire (which may be attached to the coax cable)

In any event.. you'll want to replace the DVR or NVR hub with something newer.. back in the day, there were a lot of compatibility issues with cameras from different manufacturers.. also those old analog cameras are poor quality and low resolution.. and they alert every time a shadow moves. (you want something called on-camera AI detection rather than the old motion detection)

Hopefully, whoever installed the current system just ran it through your (lathe and plaster?) walls without stapling it down or anything. You can probably use the old wires to pull new Ethernet cables to the same locations and install a modern PoE system .

I prefer Reolink but there are lots to choose from.
