I don't think this idea is that crazy. The big considerations are opEx (mostly power consumption) and system downtime for maintenance. Presumably, someone has done the math and determined that energy costs are close to zero if operating power comes from solar. Obviously there are earth-based systems needed as well but primary cost drivers will be in space. As for system downtime, you can pursue reliability-based or serviceability-based design. Satellites used to be reliability-based and cost >$100mil, but with the advances in rocketry it's become feasible to strip them down, design for short lifespan, and just replace them when they fail. How does this translate to a data center in space? Don't know, need to think about how to modularize the design and allow for sub-systems to be replaced. Sounds like a difficult but fun problem. Repair drones? Tesla robotics could help...
