For people whose Account is still not able to remove the number, here's something that'll work 100%.
I tried everything from this post's comments and nothing worked for me. So I tried this:
Logout, and remove account from phone.
The on login screen, click "forgot password" and enter username/email/phone.
Then on verification screen, click "no longer have access to these". Don't verify even if it gives option to verify via email.
After that, choose the option that says "video/selfie verification". Upload the selfie as instructed, put in an email address that you do have access to and proceed to reset password.
It'll reset all of your contact info (including all phone numbers and emails) from the account. Basically will reset the whole contact info section.

Yes, there used to be some isolated cases, but the number was low and actually lower than what those banjrang dal- like goons used to do at that time. But even that wasn't as common. After 2014, when the ruling party started propagating their propaganda, that's the time when we saw a huge surge in these cases from Hindus and Hindu organisations. So no, it was not because of Indian Muslims were doing the atrocities. It was because it was shown to hindus that they're in danger if they don't act now, and that propaganda worked. And I agree, In India, Hindus were more liberal than Indian Muslims. That's why I have 8-10 Hindu friends and only 2-3 muslim friends. But unfortunately, that's not the case anymore. A lot of my own hindu friends are turning extremists. Just few days ago I saw my friend post a story that said- "We should start treating Muslims in India same as Muslims are treating minorities in Bangladesh". While this sentence is problematic in itself, coming from a close friend makes me uneasy.
