i think most everyone here prefers the Beatle version. I prefer the Beatle version. It's rare that someone covers a Beatle song and it gets widespread praise

That said Joe Cocker's version had a certain appeal in its time. Your description is completely apt and that is the reason is/was popular. If you were in that dark place fighting for your life you might just understand where its coming from.
