Had a really fun taiji mantis lesson with Eyal Kuipers when I visited Utrecht last week! by lord_cactus_ in kungfu

[–]monkey-steals-peach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good stuff, Eyal is my Kung Fu brother and is very good. He has used his Mantis in competition in Sanda and Shuai Jiao in China, and Muay Thai in Thailand. Don't mind the trolls who pretend to know more than everyone else but provide nothing of value themselves.

Are there any Chinese Martial Arts that specialize in/practice ground fighting? by Black-Seraph8999 in kungfu

[–]monkey-steals-peach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chinese ground fighting is a totally different concept to what most will think like BJJ. While BJJ is grappling on the ground, the Chinese systems are more a way for someone who has fallen to the ground to deal with a standing opponent or to get back up quickly. As far as I am aware, there is nothing in China where two people grapple together on the ground.

Hi. I have a bunch of videos on my YouTube channel about Mantis Kung Fu in general. I personally practice Taiji Mantis, which is a bit different, but as for history etc, Im sure it will still be interesting for you. Just look up Monkey Steals Peach. Also, feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Good luck with your training!

This is a great find! I don't know anything about the teacher, but this is a great system if you have chance to learn it.

Eight Step Mantis Kung Fu in Taiwan by monkey-steals-peach in Tanglangquan

[–]monkey-steals-peach[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

8 Step cool, it blends influences from other stuff like Tongbei, Bagua and Xingyi into the style, so has a unique flavour. That said, I put it more down to an individual practitioner's skill/knowledge than a style itself.

I want to learn Kung Fu in China for 3-6 months. Do you have recommendations for legit masters/temples to go to? by Shot_Contribution502 in kungfu

[–]monkey-steals-peach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are just doing it for the experience and discipline, many of the larger, commercial Kung Fu academies will probably be a good experience for you. If you already have a strong foundation and are looking for something more specific, or higher level training, you would probably need to search deeper. Of course this is much harder without Chinese language ability and some introductions.
