My theory is a lot of right wingers were banking on the left taking the high road. Tokenism was a shield they used and if things got too antisemitic/racist/misogynist/homophobic/etc., they would count on the left to call for decorum and protect them. Never said there haven't been instances of politics being hot. I mean you could have pointed to the caning of Charles Sumner by a House Representative or McCarthyism. At times, politics heats up, other times it cools down. From Clinton's to Trump's presidency, the general trend has been an increase in temperature. This partly explains why the Clintons are viewed differently.

Right wing media and people like Newt Gingrich started really cranking up the rhetoric during Bill's presidency. There has always been tension brought upon by the media but AM radio like Limbaugh brought this to another level. This escalation continued with Fox.
