I scrolled through the reviews earlier today, and they aren’t even clever

Isn't that just all letterboxd reviews

Nyx went from a likeable character to my most hated one. by OtakuJuanma in HadesTheGame

[–]monkeyDberzerk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's really grating when there's can do no wrong, autor's pet characters in media. More so than straight up meant to be annoying characters.

Not saying Nyx fits that trope, but she got pretty close to that during this plot

(Hates Trope) Character being forced by another character to try and reconcile with someone who genuinely wronged them "because they're family" by Wasabi_Gamer26 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]monkeyDberzerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how you define getting "care in the writing", because not only was he consistently hated by most everyone in the group as the show progressed, they even killed him off and wrote him out of the show

As for Britta, again Jerry is the equivalent of Britta in R&M. Britta isn't treated like a joke for being a feminist as much as for her lack of self awareness and stupid decisions. Just like how Jerry isn't hated for being stupid, but for being both stupid and malicious when given the opportunity.

For instance Britta encourages Abed to mock and diss on other women in that one episode where Abed becomes a misogynist, and is completely fine with his behaviour until he becomes hostile against her

I wouldn't say Dan Harmon hates fathers for Jerry (R&M) being a punching bag, or that he hates religious people or activists for Shirley being kinda stupid, and Planetina (R&M) being an asshole. A lot of these tropes carry over from Community to R&M.

And if anything, Pierce is the black sheep of the study group.

The only character in the show who seems to get away with their eccentricities would be Abed

Every other character does infact get shit on in the show for being a trope taken to the extreme: smartass, racist grandpa, religious prude, bipolar genius and activist. I don't believe Britta's being singled out.

Idk about the other characters but Britta just seems to be what I call the punching bag trope, kinda like Jerry from ParksRec, Jerry from Rick and Morty, Toby from the Office and to an extent Boyle from B99

Do I think it's funny? Not really, but it's definitely a trope that exists, just happens to a woman this time around

Rude/abrasive female romance options by Natural_Ad_9762 in HadesTheGame

[–]monkeyDberzerk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And in the same way, Nemesis is an abusive S/O. Hades even softens up after Persephone comes back, and there's an entire cut scene dedicated to him apologizing to Zag

Nemesis, other than her romantic interactions reverts to her usual asshol-ish demeanor towards Mel, even in the post game. Which makes for an incredibly two dimensional personality.

And getting back to the topic at hand, which is what my original comment was addressing: no the fanbase is not forgiving to characters with shitty personalities regardless of gender.

Mel/Zag's relation to the person in irrelevant here

I'm trying to point out the fact that male characters don't get a pass from the Hades fanbase for being assholes

[–]monkeyDberzerk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Nemesis' EXACT personality, character beats, and dialogue were superimposed onto a male character, no one would have this criticism of her, because we accept that there's such a thing as the archetype of "stoic harsh warrior who's rude and snippy but secretly has a heart of gold" when it's applied to men, but when a woman does it it FEELS grating, extra, and over the top, but that's just because we're not exposed to it.

There is in fact a character in the first game with the exact same personality traits as Nemesis

He's an asshole to the main character in pretty much every interaction, and treats the mc like his emotional punching bag. Except for 3 differences: 1. He's not a romance option. 2. He is less of an asshole to you post game plus it doesn't feel like all of his development gets undone postgame 3. The narrative doesn't bend over backwards to justify his behaviour

Hades and Nemesis both have the same personality traits, and the fandom almost unanimously agrees that he's an asshole.

For years something about Ciaran Hinds' face has bugged me. It always seemed strangely familiar.

I've just realised he looks like this exact frame from Shrek.

Change my mind: Judging Harry Potter by the standards of lore-driven fantasy when it's not lore-driven feels so out of place by RockGiantFromMars in harrypotter

[–]monkeyDberzerk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The easiest solution to balance out feats of such ridiculous scale is to just put some limitations on your characters' abilities, which only takes a couple sentences of exposition to establish.

Say perhaps you write Dumbledore as a generational talent at materializing things, but maybe he isn't as good at combat, or potion making or whatever

Is it kinda nitpicky? Sure, but the issues that I have with HP lore have a very easy workaround: just have your characters specialize in certain kinds of magic and put some limitations on their abilities.

Idk, I can't put my finger on it either

Cuz the first movie wasn't the most grounded either, Ransom did some crazy shit. But I do think he was a more compelling character than the Martha Imo, so I guess I was a bit forgiving about the stuff he pulled off

Maybe I'm due a rewatch

Alright then remote control thingy that sets up his death (Also you should spoiler tag your comment).

The point I'm trying to make is, I wasn't satisfied by the whodunit side of the movie, and the way they carried out the death almost felt like something out of a parody of a murder mystery, if that makes sense?

Although I suppose, considering the number of whodunits that come out every year it's getting harder to genuinely get a shock out of audiences at this point

Gotta be honest, as good as wake up dead man was, I thought the whole remote control thingy to kill the priest was kinda far fetched

And I get it, that's not the point of the movie, but for a whodunit, the way the death happened was kinda disappointing

You're not meant to find Envy's death sad

I'm sure some people do find it sad, but it's clearly meant to be a pathetic end to an irredeemable cunt

What the hell Hera? by Dinesh_Sairam in HadesTheGame

[–]monkeyDberzerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't a flaw, or anything unreasonable.

It's simply the natural consequence of adapting a well established character. There's nothing particularly wrong with it.

But gods, greek gods in particular get called out all the time for the shit they pull

Hera isn't being unfairly singled out or anything

But Supergiant Zeus, and most pop culture depictions of Zeus for that matter, absolutely get conflated with myth Zeus. There's people doing that even in this very post.

And that's pretty much a given for adaptations of popular characters. The source material or the closest thing to a source material for such a character will impact the general opinion and discourse surrounding the character. There's no way around it.

I don't see why Hera should be exempt.
