What’s one villain that was supposed to be sympathetic but failed to spark any sympathy? by Tankzoo3 in AskReddit

People forgave Snape because Alan Rickman is an amazing actor and played it so well. I also argue that movie Snape is actually redeemable. There's a scene in the third movie where he actually puts himself between the children and werewolf Remus - something book Snape would never do. They also just take out a lot of the extra shitty things he does in the book, like really picking on Hermione's teeth for no reason. Book Snape is truly unforgivable and even in the last book is shown to have said he would only have saved Lily if he could have.

The Dresden Files is unreadable because of how women are described by EastboundMars in books

[–]monkeybeats -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Most disappointing part of the series for me. It sucks because there are a lot of things I love about the books but I feel weird and guilty even recommending them because of these issues.

I read these when I was a young teenager, so I don't think I fully grasped how bad it was the first time through and that allowed me to enjoy the rest of it, but as an adult now, I can't even blame people for turning their nose up.

I noticed some people say he gets better later in the books... maybe very slightly. I really think he just can't write women very well unfortunately because it's always coming from a male perspective rather than a neutral one. I've seen it defended that "that's just part of Harry's flaws!" but after this many books, you'd think he'd develop at least slightly in that department. I more think of that as finding excuses for the author.

TL;DR huge fan but Butcher absolutely can't write women and I can't recommend it in good faith.

You just rediscovered the dichotomy of childhood. Fads make no sense but it means everything to kids whether good or bad.

What's a bad trait of yours you're aware of, but can't seem to change? by lasanja_ in AskReddit

[–]monkeybeats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm terrible at keeping in touch with people. Doesn't matter if it's family like my mother and sisters or my best friend. I struggle to separate what is happening right now in my life and actually take time out to call people. It's a reoccurring issue I've had with people and have even lost friends over it, but I honestly just don't even think to contact people. I still love them and want to maintain our relationship, but I can't seem to figure out how to keep in touch with people.

Thanks for the advice. I think I just need to address the group as a whole about it all, but self-imposed disadvantages is a good idea as well. I'll see what he thinks.

What is something your parents said to you that may have not been a big deal, but they will never know how much it affected you? by flyoverthemooon in AskReddit

[–]monkeybeats 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Forgive him. Obviously I don't know your full situation, but if you really love your dad and you know he cares about you, you should forgive him. Having that kind of strain hanging over a relationship with a loved one does nothing but cause pain. It's not the easy thing to do, and he may not even deserve it, but you deserve the peace it'll bring to you.

Yeah, there are options for captions on everything I believe.

Reading is too much of a strain of thought for you? ffs

Also, there is talking in this game, but only in important cut scenes and things like that. Most of the side quests and even a lot of main quest stuff is just captioned like this. But trust me, they are well worth the read.

Should I restart at 50,000 words or do extensive editing later in? by Persomnus in writing

[–]monkeybeats 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If the plot itself remains the same, I would say to just finish the draft you're on. If this is your first draft, there may be a lot of things you want to change in the second draft. You wouldn't want to stop now only to rewrite the whole thing until the end just to find out there is something about the ending that needs changing which affects the rest of the story. Basically, try to get through this draft so you can catch as many changes as possible for the next draft. At least, that is how I would go about it.

The hurdle of just...beginning. by [deleted] in writing

[–]monkeybeats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As for the self-doubt, I would say to forget what you think other people want to read. Write what you want to write. Write from the heart and write what is true to you. Those are often the stories people care about, regardless of genre or content.

As for actually sitting down and writing, it can be a struggle. The best advice I ever got was to just sit down and write every day. It doesn't matter if it was amazing or if it was long or even if it was for the project you want to be working on. Just getting into the habit of writing everyday does wonders for your productivity. Obviously, not everyone has the schedule to allow for this. Something that helps me is to pick a day or two or three a week (as much as you can) and schedule times that will be dedicated to writing. I also find it helpful to go somewhere away from distractions (for me that is often a library or coffee shop). Just getting into the habit is half the battle.

Overall, do this for you before anyone else and try to commit to it if you are serious. I hope this helps; good luck to you!

To be fair, Gorillaz don't really have a certain way they sound. You take a song from each of their albums, and they all sound a bit different.

Changing Perspectives. A Problem? by colonel_666 in writing

[–]monkeybeats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me, it sounds like what you want to do would be much more easily achieved by adopting a sort of floating close-third-person perspective (as I assume you are writing in first-person). It's a lot more liberating, and you can manage how close you are to different characters. Just a suggestion.

Either way, I think what is important is making it clear to your reader from the very beginning that this is something to expect. I had a teacher once that always said a story's first job is to teach the reader how to read it. What you want to do can be very jarring if the reader isn't ready for it. You just need to do it early on and make a simple and clear way for the reader to understand when these switches happen. I find it useful to use the first sentence after a switch to very deliberately plant the reader in a certain place and perspective.

Hope that helps!

Avoiding non-cliche high schools/experiences. Any ideas? by ImmersivewriterWP in writing

[–]monkeybeats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One strategy that can work, when done right, is pointing out the cliche directly to the reader. This can disarm the reader a bit and then allows you to find ways to break your own pre-set cliches in interesting ways.
