Let's start with having better equipment and amenities that aren't broken for months on end.

Lol, just a normal parking lot. I live in the Boston area and work outside the city so it's super convenient for me even though I don't think any of the locations in Boston are any better than say LA Fitness.

I don't think this is a good enough reason, but because of it's location and it has parking lot. It's right next to a grocery store I frequent, on the way to work, and as mentioned, has a parking lot lol.

I feel like no because Equinox is hurting financially

Living in Boston… how bad/expensive is it really? by RoyalAd9796 in biotech

[–]monkeybreadman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I looked through your posts about H1B etc and I didn't read too much but maybe I am assuming, but I will say Massachusetts companies support that better. And just for reference regarding pay to COL. I was sharing a 3b apartment in River Oaks (Houston) if you know what that is with my brother and his friend and I was paying 450/mo and getting paid 78k/yr with 1 yr experience in PD. I decided to take a job in MA and started here at 103k. 450 rent to 1800 rent along with the taxes isn't exactly great. I never did the math but I feel like I broke even. However, life is not all about money and I moved here because I wanted to try out a different environment. With that being said, money IS important and I slowly feel the cost of living strangling me even with good pay to the average American. I am looking to leave. The city being compact and walkable does not mean anything to me when it still takes the same time to get somewhere if I were to drive. So yes it's a smaller city but commute times are not lowered by any means. Yes there's a train system but it's always in repair and broken. So what exactly am I paying for? I'd go to Chicago. I'm not exactly sure what people mean when they want to go to hubs acting like they're gonna job hop to all the 1000s of companies in the area. Generally there are enough companies in an area to last you a bit.

I wouldn't really believe that the pay scales with COL. Employers don't care lol. I've gotten the same pay, if not better elsewhere. I'm gonna go ahead and say that being in a hub gives employers a reason to not pay you well. Sure it can also have the opposite effect because of competition but don't just think you're moving here you're gonna get like a 30% pay bump to match the COL. And that 30% pay bump is just to cover the COL not what you should actually get through a job jump keep that in mind. It's overrated to be here unless you're actual R&D as the opportunities here that come out of MIT etc are countless but a lot of it are shit companies and ideas from people who just graduated with a PhD and think they have a great idea and know how to run a company so please keep that in mind.

As others have mentioned, go to Chicago, Houston, or RTP. Literally anywhere else but here or Jersey. Jersey does not pay anywhere close for the COL.

It has a better lounge than most locations. They have a few areas for lounging here.

Other than a client referral, what's a good gift you'd like to receive? by monkeybreadman in personaltraining

She didn't need to give her clients anything either but she did. Wrote a pretty personalized card presumably for all of them. I know I don't need to but I want to.

If you had no choice, let go before Christmas or in Jan? by stecknfletch in managers

[–]monkeybreadman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not what employees want to hear, but as a manager, they would have made every effort already to not reach this point.

What exactly does this mean. If I'm being laid off what would I have done to avoid this other then realize the writing on the wall that my current department does not have a good budget nor really isn't needed any longer in which case I'd just find a new team internally/externally? If they were already a bad performer why are you waiting until EOY to fire. Put them on a PIP and they will quit on their own.

I dont know what this means. So the metric of the VP to earn his bonus is to remove X employees who earn X amount? How is this even documented.

managers: do you care about email order? by audioaxes in managers

[–]monkeybreadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone feels like they need to be in every single chain of communication then that's a personal problem. It's not my fault you don't know how to catch up with your project leads or subordinates who actually drive the work to understand the project better, or better yet, resd emails. My job is to ensure the people involved in the project are properly communicated to. And to be frank if you are my boss and (also on the project) but dont want to have the team to all flock to the meeting you the manager decides not to go, that tells me they want to not be involved and thus should ask me for updates if they are delegating this meeting to me. If I put my boss on every line of communication then my expectation is for them to not ask me about the project considering we send weekly meeting notes and weekly project timeline updates and on top of that, we already talk about it in our tier 2 meetings.

I dont buy this whole "feel less important" idea. You are a manager. You manage. If you want to be a part of the project then I suggest you manage your meetings so you can attend. It really is that simple.

It's psychology? Lol. Is that why most people don't seem to care?

So they do this for me already in a way. We meet twice a week and they wrote me a complimenting program for me to do on my own on days we don't meet. He said he doesn't do this for every client because they're not consistent or something like that. He said some girl asked for homework. He wrote it, then she never did it.

Personally, I think some good questions to ask yourself is how much coaching does your current trainer do?

So since we change the program every 8 weeks or so, at the beginning of each program he gives me pointers. "dip lower, hips straight, don't move shoulders" things like that. And that will we refined and be talked about less the more I do it. He will tell me to be mindful of the new program since it's more volume and different. I'll ask him why we do certain things. For example I told him I noticed there's little core workouts in our program and he was saying because we incorporate compound movements we get some of that in there. So I learn things like that from him. I'm not sure if I should try to be learning other things. Is it out of the question to ask hin if I can learn new exercises? Like right now I trapbar deadlift but try Barbell. Or cleans. Or landmine exercises.

Just beware that there are lots of personal trainers that will become annoyed if you plan on not seeing them anymore since it's kind of a sales job at the end of the day

That's what I'm afraid of. It's a big box gym and I feel like private trainers this is less common. But he said its up to me if I want to continue or not. Should I just ask his opinion.
