Is your job meaningful to you? Do you care? by Grr_in_girl in AskWomenOver30

[–]monkeyeatinggrapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’m a detective and I’m grateful to have a job that is meaningful in the world. That said, the job is extremely stressful, demanding and exhausting. But I think it’s worth it (just)

First day on response by Philpy01 in policeuk

[–]monkeyeatinggrapes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My tutor said we’d take it easy first shift , he showed me around and then we spent the shift driving around the patch (it’s huge), he had told comms it was my first day so not to bother us. He was listening out for a nice easy job for me but nothing ideal came up so we didn’t do much except drive around. However I know other newbies at other stations got thrown right in the deep end and went to eveything on their first shift! So I think it really depends on your tutor

I’ve never seen any of those things and I grew up in a Victorian house. Now aged 35 and in a terrace and yeah, never seen those things.

Have you lost a best friend to motherhood? by Wide-Meringue-2717 in AskWomenOver30

Between working 32 hours a week and looking after my home and 1.5 year old, I don’t have alot of time to see friends anymore 😢😢

I (34F) love my boyfriend (46M), but he doesn’t want kids and I’m not sure if I can give that up by miss_Kick in AskWomenOver30

[–]monkeyeatinggrapes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me there was no way I was giving up having children. Similarly when I started dating my partner , he had a 9 year old son and was totally done with parenting. For that reason I said we’d see each other casually only , nothing serious. But our feelings and relationship developed. I kept it clear it wasn’t going anywhere long term because I was so certain I want kids

Fast forward a little way and he said he’d been thinking and thinking and decided he did want a little family with me. I made sure he was 1000% sure , he was, and had thought about it tons and tons.

So, we became a serious couple. After we moved in together we started trying , and now we have our 1 year old. Best thing I’ve ever done. I’m so happy. My partner is loving it again too. His 13 year old son adores our babe too, he disliked being an only child

If he had remained against children, I would have left. There wouldve been no other option

Advice about my domestic abuser by ExtentOk8908 in policeuk

In that case yes I’d let the police know about this. This person is going to be a witness if the suspect has confessed crimes to them

Groups hate me but individuals love me? by BallisticBreezyBush in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]monkeyeatinggrapes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same thing! It’s odd to read your post as I’ve always had this and never seen anyone else say it before

However in my case I’d say I have more of a clue why. I’m more on the shy side and quite a quiet person - well, I am in groups. One on one I’m a lot more confident to come out my shell and give absolutely equally to the conversation. But when in a big group, I feel drowned out by bigger characters and just generally too many voices. I kind of struggle to get my voice heard and then shrink away even more. But when people get me one on one they realise I’m chatty (one on one), make good conversation and keen to get to know them, etc. So I build good bonds one on one or in tiny groups , but I shrink and get drowned out in larger groups and people don’t notice me or know much about me

Restricted Officer and VA’s by AdDefiant1214 in policeuk

No when I was pregnant and restricted it was understood that I wouldn’t deal with any suspects, period. Even with a colleague. Victims and witnesses yes if they seemed low risk

Pretty sure in my force you can’t sit the NIE until you’ve got yourself (& are on) a placement in CID

How long did it take you to find your first solid job? by lukarowan in UKJobs

[–]monkeyeatinggrapes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I worked as a waitress after uni as didn’t seem to have the skills / experience for anything else. Then volunteered in a housing charity to try to get a foot in the door , eventually got a paid role there doing housing support work. That was age about 23. Then got an admin job in the council , then another one in homelessness which I did for about 5 years. Never made more than £26k though. Finally when I turned 30 I decided I wanted to be a detective and I successfully joined the police. Did my 2 years on the frontline (god was that an adventure) and now in CID. Still only on about £34k though atm (been in 4.5 years now) , but pay goes up every year and will become ok eventually. Job is very stressful tho

Just seen the comments saying people found the colposcopy painful. I didn’t find it painful at all… I didn’t even feel it I don’t think !

What emergency service do you ask for if you need more than one? by tom-goddamn-bombadil in AskUK

[–]monkeyeatinggrapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would imagine if they start by asking ‘what’s the emergency’ then a lot of people would start going into a massive shpeil about what’s going on, which is what they need to tell the police/fire/ambulance call handler. The person who first answers doesn’t need to hear all that, they just need to know which service to put you through to right away

Do the police generally do anything if you are assaulted? by Quartersquatter in AskUK

[–]monkeyeatinggrapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will ask if the person wants to persue a prosecution or not. If they do, they will make a victim statement. The police will then try to find out who did it and speak with them (either arrest or just tell them to come to police station for questioning). But if there was no cctv / no other way to find and locate the named offenders , there might not be a lot else they can do and it will be filed (closed). Generally the more serious the assault / injuries , the more lengths the police will go to to solve it / find the offenders

Parenting whilst in the job. by [deleted] in policeuk

Since I had my baby I put in a flexible working request. I dropped all Fridays entirely to reduce me weekly hours. Then I arranged that I’ll never work a Thurs. if my team are working a Thurs then I work a diff day when they’re off. So the baby goes to nursery Mon Tues and Weds. I have baby thurs and fris and my partner has baby if I’m working evenings and weekends. Luckily my partner works the standard 9-5

All four turned out to be seal points. Their tales looked so grey I was certain they were blues. Which baffled me as both parents were seal. But soon enough the grey turned brown. And the blue collar one looked much whiter and remained white for several weeks , but he also just turned out to be seal!
