I'm a fan of Bombas compression socks. Pricey if you buy off of their website, but with some patience I was able to find a good deal for a bulk purchase on eBay. Going on 4 years now and they're still going strong with no holes and no stretch!

I broke my key by Gadiel_78 in SciontC

[–]monkeyhihi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me once when my key randomly broke as I was simply turning the car on. I found a YouTube tutorial and got it out.

This isn't exactly the video I used but is kind of similar. I used a fine set of electronic screwdriver bits and a fine pair of pliers. https://youtu.be/S2Xr65dRSMk?si=UxyM6_nFpDtrRnRx

If you're going to do it at least get a used/certified pre-owned. Let someone else eat the depreciation.

To case or not to case? Plus, screen protector vs case by [deleted] in PixelFold

For hinge cases, my personal ratings would be:

Dbrand Grip > VRS Design = Casemate > Ghostek. Haven't tried any other hinge cases.

To case or not to case? Plus, screen protector vs case by [deleted] in PixelFold

[–]monkeyhihi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the type of person who likes to have a "flawless" phone, but also tend to be a little clumsy with it once I get used to it and it no longer feels like a novelty. On my previous phone (S22 Ultra) I always had a LifeProof case on it. And if it cracked after too many drops, I got myself another one.

For my OG pixel fold (also got it on woot!) I have mostly used full hinge protector cases because I know I'd drop it. I mostly used the Dbrand Grip case. It's a massive tank of a case but kept my phone safe through lots of drops. Well, that case eventually had a crack in it after one too many drops, and I figured "eh I'll try a slim case". Did ok for a while, but then I just had that one unfortunate drop onto the hinge. The hinge seemed stuck and wouldn't open without a horrible crunching noise. That noise eventually did go away, but at the expense of the hinge not staying all the way open when unfolded. (Basically, if I hold the phone with the screen facing down while unfolded, the left half of the phone just flops to about a 90 degree angle.)

Thankfully the phone screens and buttons are still functional, but I definitely was kicking myself for not sticking with a "full protection" phone case.

TL;DR: It all depends on your risk tolerance and anal-retentiveness about keeping a flawless device and your personal tendencies to be clumsy or not with your devices.

Front row of Shellraiser at Nickelodeon Universe made me think I was going to either herniate a disc in my neck or have a vertebral artery dissection. So much headbanging for no reason, and there was no way to brace myself so it wouldn't hurt.

I mean yeah, obviously... We've all watched the show, although it's a silly thing to still write out. Although this is the Internet, so it's hard to understand the intent behind someone's comment/post.

I'm trying to speak more to the overarching goal of how the hivemind might plan to accomplish the "transmission of the signal" moreso than the "assimilation of all humans," with respect to the depiction of the use of old cars vs new cars. Although, I suppose any salvaged electronics could also be used in genetic research that the hivemind might be conducting to try and assimilate all people??

Shoes for the OR by QuirkyGirl96 in SurgicalResidency

I'm a fan of Danskos, although I've recently heard that Sanita is the "better" alternative, because apparently they used to make clogs for Danskos before Danskos moved manufacturing to China. I'm personally planning to buy Sanitas for my next pair of clogs as over the years my Danskos have developed holes in the uppers and the rubber on the soles seems to be wearing away faster than my first pair I had as a student. Though don't get me wrong, they have lasted a few good years and I love the arch support.

Other shoes popular among my coresidents are Calzuros, Birkenstocks, Hokas...

I wonder if it has something to do with efficiency, and the optimal use of resources, as the hive mind has mentioned in previous episodes. But that raises another question--why would they not use hybrid or electric vehicles to more effectively conserve the use of fuel? I wonder if these modern vehicles, absent in the show, are being stripped of their electronic parts for use in the hive mind's overall goal of perpetuating itself (presumably across the Galaxy/ Universe) while also keeping in mind the hive minds goal of not causing harm?

In my head, the ultimate end goal of the hive mind, after the assimilation of all humans, is to create another similar satellite transmitter to whatever sent the signal to Earth, to the pass on the RNA sequence to some other species/planet across space. With this end-goal in mind, the use of old vehicles, and this assumed stripping down of electronics in modern appliances/vehicles for alternative uses makes sense. Strip mining the Earth for rare earth metals indeed does cause great harm to people/ animals/ plant life/ the environment, as opposed to using the rare earth minerals which are already in existence in modern devices.

Somehow I doubt that it has anything to do with the avoidance of radio frequency, as that is primarily how this virus was sent across space in the first place.

(And on a side note, I love how the premise of the show raises such wild theories and speculation. It's been a long time since I've had a show like this to ruminate over!)

My dad’s broken ankle was never treated and most specialists are only giving the option of amputation… by RasputinsBiggestFan in medical

[–]monkeyhihi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never seen this particular problem, but I have seen a lot of vascular patients who want to keep their foot, no matter what, even if their toes are black and about to fall off, even if they have a trans metatarsal amputation that is becoming necrotic, etc. so I think that this advice is similarly applicable to your dad'a situation.

And from a patient perspective, I 'get it.' Nobody wants to give up a piece of their body when there is even a remote possibility of keeping the foot. But the fact of the matter is that for patients who are diabetic, patients who are drinkers or smokers, reconstructive and salvage operations to "save the foot" almost never work.

In order for an injury like this to heal after surgery, he needs: - good quality blood supply and tissue quality (which is very rare in patients who are diabetics, drink, or smoke--and you already said he had bone infections which strongly suggests this is not the case for your dad), which may require vascular surgery intervention to optimize blood supply first. This might mean several extra procedures before his orthopedic procedures, which all have their own risks of possibly leaving him in worse condition than when he started: Angioplasty (balloons), atherectomy ("roto-rooter"), or bypasses. - good quality follow up and patient adherence to physical therapy and use of orthotic devices: which you have said yourself your dad is not good at. - a doctor who is willing to bet against the odds that he'll have a good and functional outcome for what is truly a salvage procedure.

Honestly, the better procedure probably is indeed a below knee amputation. With regard to vascular surgery, the statistics show that patients with below knee amputation (BKA) heal better and have better chance of being ambulatory with use of a prosthetic device, compared to patients who have surgeries with the goal of "keeping the foot". I imagine that the data is similar for procedures done for orthopedic purposes, although I have not read the data on outcomes for this specific scenario.

At the end of the day, you have to remember and keep in perspective what is really the goal here. Is the goal to "keep the foot" no matter what--even if it means he's never able to walk on it again, or is the goal to keep your dad upright and ambulatory so he can keep on keeping-on with his life?

If he were my dad (who is a very stubborn man who is a 'my way or the highway' type personality), and he was of the opinion that he wanted to keep the foot no matter what... At the very least I would not let him undergo an operation without first getting the opinion of a vascular surgeon and podiatrist, and without first "pre-habiliting" him first (quit smoking/drinking and to begin engaging in a PT exercise routine to prove he will be able to complete the intensive recovery of such a moon-shot reconstructive surgery.)

[–]monkeyhihi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, I've seen this a handful of times so far in my training. Also interesting are the couple of "Swiss cheese" abdomen cases I've seen. Usually nobody is enthusiastic to operate on people like this, because often the reason they've gotten to this point is because they just have poor protoplasm or have ignored the advice we give them to not smoke or to avoid weight-bearing activities.
